Although M:I franchise is no Bond, I'm giving this to Rogue Nation cause it's just a fun thrill ride while Spectre just felt boring compared to Craig's other Bond films imo (I know many on here disagree, but CR and SF were way better films).

For me, The fight scene in the Opera House in Austria was better then anything in Spectre, that tension was unbelieveable. Just imagine Craig having that scene in Spectre. Rebecca Ferguson, even putting Michelle Yeoh to shame, along with Charlize Theron, it's been a great year for kick ass female action leads and she is the reason I loved Rogue Nation. I loved Sean Harris Villain, plus they didn't kill him off was great. The Scene in the underwater tank out Bond even Bond top stunts. The car chase after was great as well.

That's the first thing myself and my brother said after the first screening of Spectre, "it's no Rogue Nation". I was shocked at how good that film was. Spectre isn't bad it's a solid film.

Yes Rebecca Fergusson (anglo-swedish actress) was great as the two-timing femme fatale in MI-Rogue Nation.
I saw 5 action films in the summer Terminator etc.) and before Bond I rated it my favourite Film of 2015-for the action and
a good story. It was a non-stop rollercoaster.
Spectre is good with the return of traditional Bond elements-like the Gunbarrel at the start of the film.
I've followed the film locations for a year on the mi6-hq news website, so knew what was coming.
I gave Spectre 8/10 (will never be as good as the 1960s films).
I think MI gives the best thrills and action. So I'm torn as I'm a long time Bond film fan.

    Bleuville.

Of course I will be buying it as soon as it comes out. I haven't seen it yet either, but I do enjoy Tom's unerringly goody-two-shoes Hunt quite a bit.

    But he ain't Bond. B-)

I enjoyed Rogue Nation much more than Spectre. Similar plots and locations, but MI5 had a better script, better action, tighter editing, and a superior leading lady.

Yes, MI5 is not Bond, but then again Die Another Day and Moonraker are Bond, so that argument means little to me.

There were a lot of spy-themed movies this year, and quite frankly Spectre fared poorly against most of them. My ranking:

    1) Kingsman.
    2) MI: Rogue Nation
    3) Spy
    4) Spectre
    5) Man from UNCLE

Yes, Spectre even ranked below a Melissa McCarthy comedy for me, and I usually hate Melissa McCarthy movies. Spectre just barely beat Man from Uncle. I'll have to watch Man from Uncle again to see if it moves ahead of Spectre.

So, MI:Rogue Nation has better music, better editing, more amazing stunts & chases, way cooler crazy gadgets & more energy than SPECTRE.
That said, I like SP a bit better just for its overall tone & restraint. Let Hunt have the big giant stunts! Bond is more subtly impressive. And remember, Bond stunts were big during the 80's & 90's- the best Bonds don't rely on stunts to sell the story.
MI:RN is great for what it is, and I'll be revisiting it regularly, but Bond is closer to being a real human being to me than Hunt, and that matters.
Dalton & Connery rule. Brozz was cool.

    Rogue Nation = Great!!
    Spectre = Great.
    Fixed that for ya! :))

Okay, seriously, RN was a pretty nearly perfect movie given the tone they set for it.
SP was clearly imperfect on many levels, but overall, I thrill to Bond movies more than Hunt ones for the simple fact that Tom's character is flawless in moral character AND physical prowess. A great director like the one on RN can distract you from the 'Superman' thing well enough, but make no mistake- MI movies are Tom playing the role of the righter of wrongs, and the saviour of the day (along with his worshiping crew).
Imperfection and improvisation are at the heart of the Bond character, and no Mission: Impossible movie can trump Bond at his best (or even pretty good-est) IMO.

    I think we tend to be much more hyper critical and disect Bond films much more than others...but we like them better because they are Bond films. -{

In the 90s, MI and MI2 were vastly superior to any of Brosnan's. In the 00s-10s, CR and SF were clearly superior to the MI franchise and QoS and SP are below both Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation which I truly enjoyed.

By the way, Rogue Nation has a scene that reminded me a lot of TLD. Might be a coincidence but who knows.

MI was nowhere near Bond movies at the time. MI2 was vasty improved and almost as watchable.

M:I - Great spy thriller, but not a film you watch over and over again.
M:I 2 - Fun to watch every once in a while, but it is a bit bland.
M:I 3 - Weakest of them, doesn't feel remotely like an M:I film.
M:I 4 - Great fun, cool gadgets and the first M:I film I would say that was like a Bond film.
M:I 5 - The best, it's M:I 4 but better, more outrageous stunts, more humour, more action.

The real problem for the MI series, is when Tom leaves saying " Never again"
Will they be able to find an Australian actor to replace him ? :D

I didn't notice MI2 was bland. In fact, it's hard for me to notice anything in that movie apart from Thandie Newton! She would be perfect for a bond movie too.

    I agree with your assessment of M:I 4 and M:I 5.

I hated M:I when I first saw it. Whatever it was it wasn't Mission Impossible and was a kick in the teeth to fans of the original series. It left such a sour taste in my mouth I still haven't seen 2 or 3, not that the reviews for those films made me want to run out and see them.

To answer the original question of the thread, after 2 viewings of both films I was much more impressed with Rogue Nation than I was with Spectre. Maybe partly because my expectations were naturally higher for Spectre, but Mostly it has to be that Rogue Nation was just a much more entertaining movie. It was exciting all the way through and flies by, where Spectre drags and feels every bit of it's over 2 and a half hour running time.

As far as the franchises go as a whole, we are on a James Bond fan forum, of course most of us appreciate the Bond series more. I would say that the Mission Impossible series has a better batting average than the Bond series, but the best M:I films just can't hold a candle to the best Bonds. I do love all of the M:I movies excluding the second one, garbage in my eyes, I cringe every time I catch some of it on TV.

I thought Kingsman was better than either, but I honestly doubt they would be unable to duplicate what made Kingsman great once they do the sequel and do not think it will make an enduring franchise.

I found RN very watchable (albeit I saw it on a plane....) and the story felt stronger and more cohesive to me than Spectre did. I liked Spectre (seen it twice so far) but it felt very disjointed and didn't quite deliver for me, story didn't really flow in my opinion.

I was hanging on the outside waiting for my field tech support to open the door. Once in, got it all sorted quickly; helped the crew 'out', whacked on the autopilot and then found the in flight movies. Bar service was a bit slow but that's what you get with stolen military cargo planes....
