When Bond was putting his gun to Blofeld's head at the end, I was reminded of M's quote from when he was talking with C earlier in the film, something to the affect of "My agents have the license to kill, or to not kill."
I also was thinking of Judi Dench's M lecturing Bond not to kill everyone. She was so annoying about that in QOS.
Thing about that was M was hoping to get information on Quantum, and with Bond ending up killing every potential lead she got pissed with him.
The ending for me was amazing! My favourite Craig ending.
I love the whole action sequence with the old MI6 building blowing up And Bond escaping on the boat with Swann. That was so unbelievably awesome!
The scene where he starts shooting at the helicopter with his pistol was pure Bond. Was smiling like a giddy idiot the whole time.
To see Blofeld crawling along the bridge, that was great to see, I also found M's run hilarious.
How he kind of hobbled, fast paced walked to catch Blofeld.
And the ending!
I didn't blame Bond one bit. Swann is gorgeous. I, too, would have thrown my Gun away and not kill the villain if it meant keeping her for the rest of my life!!

I would like to say that the film (especially the ending) needed more Bond theme. Cut out a few close up shots, the should have had the building collapse, a shot of M watching, and then Bond and Madelaine burst out through the smoke in the boat, with the classic Bond theme blaring.

The Bond theme was completely necessary at the moment, and the lack of it downplayed the moment. Any exciting music would have been an improvement. The lacklustre score is one of the biggest problems with the finale feeling small.

So, ummm... you seem to have loved it as much as I did... {[]
I saw it got the second time last night and loved every minute!
I'm not sure if anyone else has picked up on this, but Blofeld's lair... The crater caused by the meteorite... Did anyone else notice it looks a bit like a volcano? ) ) :007)
Anyone understand why they made demolishing the old Mi6 building a big plot point? I'll be sad to see it go as a backdrop and the new 'modern' building seems a bit bland to me.
I think it had something to do with Bond letting go of his past, or something like that.
Yep. It's certainly all there that he's given up. Including throwing his gun away on Westminster Bridge.
It was only on my second viewing that it struck me more in the final scene with Q that he had actually left! On first viewing (and I'm sure it can be taken both ways), I felt he had just gone for a break after the mission.
They've left it open. Hopefully DC will return for Bond 25 which could start with him being on holiday with Miss Swann and either being called back into service for some reason (to recapture Blofeld) or as per OHMSS, Blofeld catches up with them following his escape from Her Majesty's Pleasure (albeit in a different Bond universe from OHMSS now).
However, after seeing DC's Bond drive off into the (proverbial sunset) with his girl, I'm not sure I could stand another film with him in revenge mode and completely angst ridden..
I'm sure whatever they do and whichever direction they take, it'll be great and I really hope DC does one more.
It's interesting in that last scene that Q refers to him as "Bond" instead of 007 as he always did previously.
They just need to give him a suitably grand evil scheme...and give him interesting and disturbing things to say and do.
So basically, like I said, they needed to do more with his character.
You said 'develop his character'...and what I suggested is more story and plot than character. IMO, we understand his motivations, and unless they intend to give him an arc of some sort and have him reform, I think he should just be a supervillain.
How about "join me, and together we can rule the Galaxy, er, world, together!"?
"I sense the good in him..."
OK, so it is a hokey reference to Star Wars, but that's why these forums are such fun - ridiculous speculations from adoring and appreciative fans.

Though damaging the building was ok to me as far as a plot device in SF, I really dislike the idea it was destroyed in this film. MI6 HQ is a real place and Bond's world is fiction, but they've used the building to reinforce the idea that Bond is a modern character and he works for the real MI6. Now that concept has been totally removed from the series and he seems to be existing in an alternate reality. I don't comprehend what the reasoning was behind this. It would have been better if the building were saved..it would have been another failure on Blofeld's part on top of losing his desert HQ, the Nine Eyes program and doing in Bond.

There is no "vent" on that part of a Dauphin helicopter, is is a drop down inspection panel that covers that whole area, two hinges and a glassed in inspecton port , if the round had even penetrated the airframe ,and at that range I would doubt it ,it would strike the outer casing of the engine and bounce, if it even had the power by that stage, off ,it could not get to the turbine blades at all from that angle, the whole scene is BS.

BUT, it *might* 'bounce' into the upper rotor assembly and then down into the turbine shaft to interrupt positive flight control and maybe not be as explosive as in the movie but still bring it down all the same...

to talk about the ending again...I don't think Bond is 'in love' again, I just see this as a classier version of the 'Bond goes off with the girl at the end', just better than 'attempting re-entry' on a space shuttle.
Not sure Swann even needs to have a mention in the next film, Bond can't settle into another life and the two don't have to stay together. Blofeld can properly escape for 25 and Craig can come back for one last ripping yarn! I think to draw a veil over the Swann relationship would be easy.
Agreed. Obviously he cares about her but there is a spectrum of caring; not every woman has to be a wife or a whore. For this moment we're to believe that he cares for her and he's going off to have a bit of a holiday and a nice time but I don't see any indication that he's leaving for good (some hint that Craig might be but certainly not the character). I swear that Craig's Bond is always threatening to leave/temporarily leaving. I think very few people apart from fans will remember Swann in three years time when the next film comes out so he'll start off as single again. I don't think she'll get killed; another revenge against the death of a woman he loves would be too samey. Also, he's a spy- he doesn't need to be doing everything for the sake of a woman, it's his job to go on missions. That's why I loved the ending of QoS and why SF was so irritating because it reintroduced an emotional crisis that was already resolved in QoS. I don't believe that he would so readily lose loyalty to his job when he'd committed to his duty at the end of QoS.
like the rest of the movie, it left a few logic questions for me, one in particular
when bonds' first shot at the helicopter ESB was leaving in, there was ZERO reaction from anyone in it, it took four or five shots which the final shot hit the rotor axle!
then he took notice, the complete smug git :v
as for the end in the old MI5 building, the net that he saw at the start was obviously there for him to choose to jump down into with madelaine!
and yes, he left all lovey dovey with swann, but came right back
good end with ESB though, and also slightly surprised he didn't shoot him between the eyes, since he doesn't have a direct family connection with him ..... bless your heart james
I think I've come up with a solution to the shooting-down-the helicopter problem. First Bond shoots at the heli with his handgun. It doesn't have much of an effect on the heli, but it inspires the armed police on the riverbank to join in. They have assault rifles (G36?) and manage to damage and slow down the helicopter. This way the boat with Bond and Madeline can overtake the heli. Bond hands over the wheel to Madeline and finds a distress flare in the boat (realistic, I think) He fires the flare at the heli and it goes in the window of the helicopter and explodes. The heli crashes. This way the helicopter can be brought down in a believeable way, but stil letting Bond be the person who does it.
But there is another part of the ending I have a problem with. After the heli crashes on the bridge, M walks up to a firearms officer (British SWAT, is that what they're called?) identifies himself by saying "Double-O section" and tells the police to wait while Bond confronts Blofeld.
Why Double-O section? Not only isn't M in the 00-section, is one of the departments under him. The 00-section is also disbanded at this time. It's not unbelieveable that a firearms officer has been briefed on the existance of the 00-section, but still.
I think M should have identifying himself as MI6 or Secret Inteligence Sevice.
