Thanks...saves me having to repeat Asp9mm's about cameras.... -{
Asp9mm didn't mention the part about Bond saying that "C" stood for "Cameras". And that's not just from the deleted scene, that's from an old draft of the script. The whole thing about C being for camera still doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. It would be too childish of Bond to call Denbigh "C" just because he put up cameras. "M" wouldn't call him C for camera, so it must be a real title as well, which is still not explained in the former script.
I just assumed that CraigBond was insulting him, implying a very bad word
that scene was a bit tense, with M being professional and diplomatic while introducing his new boss, and his employee being deliberately obnoxious (without getting disciplined for it)
speaking of M, were John Huston's (CR67) or Edward Fox's (NSNA) characters given proper names? different universe, different rules, I know, but just curious

Well he did to me somewhere or other...that because of all the cameras perhaps they should call him C (see - as in seeing things with cameras)... -{

C. stands for Careless as M states in the CNS building to C. before he.....
and I think we all know what Bond thinks C stands for.
"And we know what 'C' stands for."
The line, delivered by M at the end when he's holding Denbigh's bullets, got quite a good laugh from the crowd. It's rather a pity it wasn't left at that, as the moment was spoilt when M added: "Careless." :v

I thought adding in "careless" was perfect. It was funny because it wasn't what I was expecting to hear.

I agree...I prefer keeping the "careless" line in -{
I taunts liked that they added in careless. We all knew what he really meant, it's sort of like M tries to be cool with a one liner and then messes it up with a civilised and rather polite line. I don't know, without it it sounds something smug that Bond would say, M isn't supposed to be good at these sorts of things like one liners.

It's certainly less scandalous. But it flattened out the end of the scene for me; a 'less is more' thing.

I get that...perhaps it's a 'British' thing..?...hinting at a rude word, letting you think that...but then taking it somewhere else... )

Yes, I'm sure I just didn't get it, not being British. Bit 'on the nose' for my taste.

Well, some of us Yanks will probably struggle with that one as well.

Occams' Razor. The somersaults you must go through in order to explain away the obvious is why it's a less plausible explanation.
Afraid I see more leaps of faith in your belief that the M corresponds to the name of the person that occupies the position. It was a statement by Bond, never confirmed but for a happy coincidence. You're using circumstancial evidence as support for your theory.
Anyway, it's a minor point, doesn't really worry me, so whatever explanation works best for you (mine does for me, so to each his/her own!).
Seriously? The line of dialogue in Casino Royale literally says it's based on her name. On the other hand, you have no evidence whatever it simply conforms to a position.
Well, some of us Yanks will probably struggle with that one as well.
We've been covering logical fallacies in my Honors course this week. I'm going to use this thread to see what they think -- I've used some before and gotten interesting results as they analyze the reasoning offered.

You should read through an entire thread (or at least the last few pages of a thread) before posting.
It got a laugh at the cinema, so that's all that really matters. Also helps
to show how Bond doesn't like him.
