Which Brosnan film had the best action?

DieAnotherDayDieAnotherDay Glasgow, ScotlandPosts: 460MI6 Agent
The same topic could be made for other actors in the series but I felt it worked best with Brosnan since all 4 of his films had the action set pieces ramped up to 11 and they were extremely well spread out throughout the runtime!

All his films included some fantastic action and stunt work (even DAD) but which one do you all think had the best?

I shall post my thoughts soon
....and the best he ever managed was a sermon on the mount.

TND and TWINE probably both have the most action in them but I'm swaying towards GE because that PTS and Tank chase are just something else! Although I will say that the Parking Lot and Thames chase certainly make it a contest.

I thought the idea of Bond having to drive a car from the back seat
was inspired -{ , using the knife he had already stabbed in to Stamper
    was another lovely touch. {[]

Ahem, to expand: some have criticised TND for being all-action, thin plot, but I think that's one of its strengths. That, plus David Arnold's score.
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
The score is fantastic ( specially after GE) it's simply a " B*lls to the wall"
Non stop action flick. Car chase, Bond firing two machineguns, everthing
    Exploding at the end ..... Simply great escapist fun. -{

It's really hard to say as they're all action packed but I'm gonna have to go with DAD. There's one action sequence after the other. these were the days when evy location jad one major action setpiece.

Yeah, the Brosnan Era was pretty much the action-packed era.

It seems many people criticize it for sacrificing story in favor of action.

But I generally just enjoy the ride when I watch a Brosnan Era film.

I think they have story AND action. the storys are not as complicated as FRWL for instance, but they are very solid and not "weak"...

Tomorrow Never Dies, by far. Die Another Day also had some really good set pieces among some not-so-good set pieces. The World Is Not Enough has a couple of ambitious ones but none of them really hit hard. Goldeneye is the most balanced Brosnan film, featuring good action but also a number of other elements which make a Bond film good.

All of them, honestly. GE has the most memorable, TND has a lot of action but a lot of it is forgettable standard action film stuff. TWINE is the weakest, there's just not a lot. Compared to the other Brosnan films, this one really focuses on story. DAD has some excellent action, they could go as far as they wanted with the stuff, and they definitely did. As well as that, I think this must have had the most difficult stuff to do; the hovercraft chase, getting permission for the parachute jump, converting the cars to four wheeled drive etc.

In terms of quantity, it is a toss b/w TND and DAD .... then GE which has a couple of quality sequences - PTS and Tank chase .... In TWINE, apart from the excellent PTS, other action sequences were not that note worthy

I think TWINE has a load of action and most of it is great
    There's:
The Jump from the Bankers Office
    The Thames Chase*
    Parahawks
    Nuclear Bunker
    Pipeline
    Caviar Factory*
    Submarine

The 2 with the Asterisk are my personal favourites but all of them are a whole load of fun. The only disappointing thing is that nothing in the film can quite match that awesome absurdity of the 14min PTS

Agreed. I also think GE is it. Nowadays, putting action on the screen has become a paint by numbers activity but the key is making it count for true impact. IMO the action in GE was "smart" even in scenes in which that may be deemed excessive like the St. Petersburg armoury escape including the tank chase because of the context, e.g., a captive Bond seizing an opportunity to escape in the face of formidable opposition so that his skills and abilities “click in.” The same applies in the PTS that showcased Bond's penchant for narrowly turning around almost certain defeat. In the climax I really felt the struggle in the showdown between Bond and Trevelyan, which IMO was the best ending of the 4 Brosnan Bond movies.

First: What a great thread! {[]

I tend to agree that TND is the one to go when it comes to the "best" action. But it is a difficult decision.
GoldenEye has so much iconic action that really stands out. The PTS in TWINE is spectacular, Zukovsky's Caviar factory getting shredded by helicopters also is quite fabulous.
And then there is DAD, for me this movie is unfairly ridiculed for the 10 seconds of admittedly truly bad CGI (a crime that should have never been allowed, BB?? why didn't you veto this?).
DAD has so much epic action, alone all the Iceland action puts common action movies to shame. One of the best ever car battles ensues there. Falling luxury cars (into rice fields), big plane disaster action. And don't forget that PTS with the hovercrafts.
And there is so much more in all 4 Brosnan movies.

Here is a ranking of the action scenes:

    1. Tank chase in St. Petersburg (bloody freaking hell how cool and awesome can it get) :))
    2. PTS in Tomorrow Never Dies (no explanation necessary)
    3. PTS in TWINE (explosion at MI6, not enough?, ok-speed-boat chase on water, not enough? ok-speed boat on ground, still not enough?? ok-hot air balloon action with explosion and Bond falling hard into the title sequence, not enough?? ok-get lost :)) )
    4. Car vs Car on ice, Holiday on Ice show can pack it in against such competition :))
    5. Driving a BMW by remote control, no problem, just ask Q, parking it in the rental shop by flying into it? no problem, just ask Bond :))
    6. Pierce Brosnan on skis.
    7. PTS of GoldenEye (what a brilliant entrance for a new Bond)
    8. Falling out of a big plane with a helicopter just after you dropped luxury cars into rice fields.
    9. Everything else :D

Well DAD was very successful, had PB's biggest Box Office draw despite terrible reviews when it came out.

It's just that on here, it generally gets a bad rep because it's compared against so many better Bond films around it.

I still think TND could have done more with the little amount of plot it had. Quantum of Solace has an even more lopsided story-to-action ratio, but I felt like it was more inventive, consistent, believable, intelligent and emotionally engaging than TND.

The thing is with TND is with the many many script changes they forgot about story. Its Bond by numbers. No wonder Judi Dench was tearing her hair out at the changes

Still, its the best of the Brosnan films....
