    When OHMSS was being made, the producers also did not know that GL would not continue and that SC would return .... So it would make sense to not worry too much about plastic surgery and see YOLT as a stand alone. However, since things did not go as planned, OHMSS becomes the stand alone film :)

    Good points

    Until Moonraker - every film is bigger and better

    Saltzmans gamble with Lazenby didn't work. And OHMSS got reevaluated in the home video market

    I just find that DAF is made poorly, in a lazy fashion. There's little care in many of the scenes with how they're made, acted and the film lacks polish.

    At the same time, the first half of the film is very funny and it's refreshing to watch at times. It's just a pity that the 2nd half of the film falls apart.

    I always wondered how the GF plot would have worked

    It would also be like - one brother liked dealing in gold and the other in diamonds :))

    no, I meant would it have made a good film (with SC and Fröbe again) or would it have been a try to recreate GF

    It would probably have been an attempt to recreate the magic of GF. How it would have turned out is subject to speculation .... But it would have been a big hit as people would have loved to see those two on screen again .... Current DAF did very well at BO. To give you the scale, when adjusted for inflation and from the films that came after it, it made more than any film from 80s and 90s

    So after the relatively weak performance of OHMSS at BO, it rebooted the franchise and set new direction for the 70s. It did its job :)

    I guess Connery's return is to blame for that

    A few people on this forum have mentioned how good DAF was as an escape at the time because of what was going on in the world...

    The film came out in 1971, at a time when the Vietnam War hadn't ended yet.

    The US ended its involvement in that war in 1973.

    At the same time, the first half of the film is very funny and it's refreshing to watch at times. It's just a pity that the 2nd half of the film falls apart.

    2nd half is not DAF's strong point, esp. after Plenty is thrown in to the pool .... I have criticized that too

    However, depending upon perspective, there are quite a few Bond films that fall apart later on such as AVTAK (once Zorin enters States w/ the GG sequence being an exception), SF (once Silva is captured), DAD (once Bond reaches the Ice Hotel), GE (once Bond lands in Russia - with the tank chase being an exception), etc.

    On recent viewing, I found that the 2nd half is not that bad. In fact, sequences such as the ones below are fun:

    * Moon buggy chase with those guys behaving as if they are on moon. And Bond just destroys the entire set up :))
    * The car chase in LV with the sheriff trying to drive the car on two wheels too (I hv got him)
    * Bond's elevator ride and climb to WW's penthouse
    * Bond's dilemma - which Blofeld to kill (right idea, wrong pussy)
    * Bond left in the pipe .... and how he comes out of it (I was taking a stroll and lost my way or something like that)
    * Radiation shield chk
    * The satellite launch
    * The attempt to exchange the tape at the Oil Rig
    * The exchange with Wint and Kidd on the ship

    The experience is also enhanced by the excellent score .... And SC gives an unique performance. His one liners bring a smile (though he does not look as great as he did in his earlier films)

    Now add the excellent first half to it. The film becomes easy to watch and has climbed up in my ranking. It is similar to Blofeld themed films such as SP which has taken some of its sequences from DAF

    I absolutely adore Diamonds are Forever. It is easily in my top 5 favourite Bond films. I can understand why people don't enjoy it but I just suspend all sense of reality and its place after OHMSS and have an absolutely ball with it! I don't want to tell people what to enjoy but I feel like people take it way too seriously. It is full of some of the best Bond quotes and funny lines, fun characters and some great action scenes. It has so much replay value because it is just so lighthearted and a ball. Oh and that score...fantastic!

    Though I don't rank it as high, I agree with you. It has many very memorable moments, which is a great strength of the film.

    The first 10 films don't follow the kind of pattern associated with films from 80s onwards, for e.g. I would put the first 10 films roughly in the following segments:

    * Basic spy adventure film - DN
    * Hitchcockian feel - FRWL
    * Relatively grand schemes with a nice balance of various elements - GF, TB and YOLT
    * Back to basics / serious tone - OHMSS
    * Fun theme - DAF
    * Bizarre plots - LALD and TMWTGG
    * OTT plot, stunts, gadgets and sequences - TSWLM

    What is interesting is that the films in the Blofeld trilogy are different with OHMSS being on the serious/basic side, DAF on the fun side, and YOLT striking some kind of a balance

    From 80s onward, the pattern and feel is more easier to follow (and rank):

    * John Glen directed films
    * Brosnan films
    * Craig films

    :)
