Old Fashioned Film Trailers and Contempary Trailers: A Comparison

Which style do you prefer? Do you prefer the 60s and 70s trailers with the enthusiastic VO, but it reveals a lot of the film? Or do you prefer the contempory trailers without the VO and not showing a lot of the film?

New trailers by far. Old trailers were awful, the editing was off, they revealed all the best bits, and the VO kept on coming and going during the trailers, as well as basically spelling out the plot!

I don't like most of the Bond trailers, since the old ones gave away too much and the more recent ones make the films seem boring and only show action. Spectre, however, had one of the best trailers because it was suspenseful.

    New ones.

I agree with Millenium Force - the old ones are awful.

The Goldeneye teaser trailer is epic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AN1bkIEs8oo

It's something i've always wondered when watching the trailers on Youtube.. It's interesting to read your thoughts.

I like the old trailers because of the bright colours and visuals. I don't like how they give away so much of the film.

The new trailers don't do that. I'm in two minds about which style i prefer.

I really like Roger Moore narrating the trailer for TSWLM. I also like how Pierce Brosnan shot the letters in the GE teaser trailer. I wouldn't want Bond to break the fourth wall in the films, but I like that in the trailers.

I liked Sean narrating the Dr No trailer as well. I don't think we'll see DC or any actor after him doing that.

    I like the old ones - the accents on the voice-overs are brilliant. :) -{

When I came to the theater-going age, those old trailers certainly brought me in to watch whichever newest Bond movie there was! Of course, those were from the late 70's onwards and the quality seemed to differ and improve as the decades went on. However, considering the marketing budgets for these trailers, I wonder why the quality of film for the movie excerpts looked so poor and grainy, as if they were film footage shot from within the theater? Then you had these tough-talking narrators who sound like the guy who played Felix Leiter in GF, and...who wrote their lines?!?

It's that sort of accent that is unheard of nowadays.

Funny thing, I was just watching some of the old Bond trailers.

As much as I hate the trailer cliche of fading to black every few seconds, The modern ones are far superior. Now the movies? That's different.
I'm so glad I saw most of the pre-70s movies before I saw the trailer, because I would have been a little frustrated. The older trailers may not explain every important scene, but the best bits of the movie are always clearly shown in the trailer. Don't get me wrong, I love the dramatic voice over, especially in the Connery-films ;)
One thing I love about the older Bond films, (Moore movies in particular) is how they exist larger than life, and just outside the reaches of reality, but not too unrealistic it seems un-Bond like *cough* Moonraker *cough*
The thing about the older trailers, is that they spoil everything! I love going into a Bond movie especially not knowing what to expect.

tl;dr I like the new trailers better :))

I do think the older trailers are more exciting and inventive but they do tend to show the good bits whereas for Bond, I think it works best in a snappier modern style so we get the impression of what may happen in the film rather than knowing which moments are going to be shown.

Yes, all very proper accents - "received pronunciation" (RP) don't you know! :D

I wonder if this is a generational thing. I'm 47 & I tend to prefer older trailers, though admit there can be a crudeness about them compared to modern slickness. Older trailers seem tailored to the specific film whereas newer ones seem churned out by some trailer-making factory - they're indistinct from one another. I also don't like the modern trend of one second image followed by quick fade to back & so on throughout the trailer. Annoying & confusing. But I do like GOLDENEYE. Not exactly new though - that was 21 years ago!

I agree in that the old trailers had more charm to them but then I'm old fashioned if not old (31). :D

I tend to like the older trailers. Didn't Maurice Binder pierce them together?

I actually don't know but it would be great to find out if he did. Perhaps the film editors put them together?
