Last night I was watching Under Siege and it dawned on me that it has a lot of similarities to The Spy Who Loved Me. The part where Steven Seagal leads his team to the armory and rigs up the ship's main gun to fire against their own submarine was like Bond devising a plan to break thru the armored control room.
In my biased opinion, TSWLM should get more credit as a pioneer of military-action films. Sure, there were movies like Where Eagles Dare and Kelly's Heroes, but those were set in WWII and still feel like "war movies." TSWLM features a contemporary military setting with no relation to any real conflict. It can also hold its own alongside submarine thrillers like Hunt for Red October.
The 'fighting against terrorists in a confined space theme' led Under Siege to be called "Die Hard on a Battleship", but you could almost say that TSWLM was "Die Hard on a super tanker"
"Just a fly in the ointment, Stromberg" - Bond
Bonus Point: Also like Die Hard it even has a cowboy movie reference with the submarine being called the USS Wayne.
