it's just a shame he will have only achieved 5 films in 13 years and we've never had a proper bond adventure with him. Hopefully the delay is purely down to them putting together a bond film Dc wants to make.

Hopefully back to back means he finishes on 6!!!

As for origin story - CR was enough for me, we dont need another, done to death with superhero crap
Well back to back would make sense of the 2019 release date then we may get the next in 2020.... Wouldnt that be something.

I assume its just wishful thinking. Sure its possible but given the amount of time, effort and financing it takes just to make ONE of these films. And the fact that Craig gets physically and mentally taxed after just one film, makes me seriously doubt back to back films.

I like the back-to-back idea, shoot one extra big epic film and release it in two or more parts, like Lord of the Rings or Kill Bill
get all the actual filming out of the way, and just save the postproduction for part 2 til after part 1 is released
that way they don't have to waste another four years wondering when their big star feels like coming back to work, they already have his scenes in the can
might also help them to write a more coherent story
    Number24 wrote:
No hard reboot - Bond isn't Spiderman!
yes but upthread someone was speculating the franchise would be taken over by DisneyMarvelLucasfilm, which was why Spider-Man just got a third reboot in only six films
    Matt S wrote:
How are they going to tell the origin story of Bond if it isn't a hard reboot? :#
I know yall don't want to hear about Marvel, but in fact this new Spider-Man film did not retell the origin yet again, instead for some reason they made him a much younger kid and made him the protégé of the popular Iron Man character, it was all about integrating an existing franchise into Avengers continuity

I couldn't help but roll my eyes when I read:
The next Bond movie — the 25th in the series, if you include “Never Say Never Again” from 1983, which was made by an outside production company — will be produced by Eon’s Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

I saw that as well. Incredible what passes for reporting these days 8-)

yeh youd think journalists would have more time to sit around watching old movies
what else could they possibly be doing that's so important?

Also, I'm pretty sure there were early talks (and that these can be found in the Sony leaks) and especially in an interview with Daniel where one of the ideas the producers had was a back to back, but he found the idea too taxing.

I'm fairly certain this was for Spectre, and I'm fairly certain that he just didn't want to do 2 back to back Bond movies because of how tiring it would be and because he wanted to focus all his energy on the one.

But I think Daniel was just upset when they barely got the end of Spectre very shortly before it started filming, and he wouldn't want to double that. My theory is that if there is 2 Skyfall or 2 Casino Royale quality scripts waiting to be made, with top directors, editors, DPs, etc. attached, Daniel (to quote Neil McCauley) will not hesitate, not for a second.
    Yes. Consssssiderably.

Well they better absolutely nail it with this next film. Otherwise they could be in a spot of bother. 4 years is a long time. imagine if they had of served up Spectre in 2012 instead of Skyfall as a follow up to Quantum. The series would have copped a fair bit of heat. These long gaps are fine but it means that you'd better make a cracking film otherwise your series is put in jeopardy.

Four years between films, so the next guy can look forward to a run of about three movies :))
Unless they get a teen for Bond the early years or "skiing with my Brother"

Well said. In addition, audiences tend to lose awareness after a short time. After 4 years we might get another Bond film that needs to introduce the character to a new generation. That was alright when GE was in production as LTK had been less than huge at the box office and Eon was trying to get back to the elements audiences responded to in the first place. CR was a deliberate re-boot/ reintroduction, and with SF there was the added publicity of the 50th anniversary to spark interest.
What's going to be the hook this time?
  • LoeffelholzLoeffelholz The United States, With LovePosts: 8,998Quartermasters
The franchise has been in much tighter spots than this, gents. And the many deaths of James Bond have turned out to be greatly exaggerated :007)

As for a hook? It's a James Bond film. It's the 25th James Bond film. It's Daniel Craig's swan song - or the back-to-back-filmed Bonds will be his swan song. Or everyone is shocked and someone new is in the tux :)) Hopefully we'll know by October...

That about sums it up. I do think we will know officially if Craig is returning or not before the Logan Lucky promotional tour begins.
If it turns out Craig is not returning I believe EON will squeeze as much as they can out of the "who is the next Bond?" mystery...even if they have a signed contract with Hiddleston or whoever's name is on it.

Too long a wait. Way too long.

Let’s not forget that at the start of this franchise they could put out a movie a year between 1962 and 1965. Of course, they were different times.

Even after Thunderball, there was maximum 2 years for decades.

Now, we’re down to 4 years between? Joke.

I’m disappointed at how Broccoli and Wilson are handling this. If DC doesn’t want to do any more, then B and W should quickly move on. In any case, DC isn’t going to recapture the magic of Casino again. Now that was real Bond.

This announcement looks like, "Hey, we're doing this, on this date, with or without you."

Cast a new actor and get Martin Campbell and a 2018 release date. There’s probably already a script on file.

The next one will be an origin story pre Casino Royale with Craig's Bond. But it won't be Craig in the role...

It Will be Tiger Lily Geldof's boyfriend - scroll down :D

I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't have a problem with the wait. In a climate where most studios (Marvel obviously comes to mind) churn out franchise films at a dizzying pace to feed the insatiable appetite for content, I think it's refreshing that the Bond producers don't feel the need to follow this model. As I've said before, there is zero evidence that spacing out the films has "hurt" the franchise (complaints about creative direction have NOTHING to do with a 3-4 year gap between films).

    Further, Spectre was an overall poor showing and I think it was necessary to put some distance betweeen it and the next film. I'm hopeful that the longer wait will rejuvenate the key players - and Craig in particular. Spectre lacked any trace of the the kinetic intensity that characterized his first two films. Once he's had a break and has gotten to work on some other projects, I'm hopeful that he will return in better form. -{

I agree to an extent, I just find that the big movies just seem to fade away into obscurity with frightening speed. I'm impatient for the next Bond every time one is released but the build up adds to the spectacle. When I was a kid when the big films were coming out ( notably bond and Indiana Jones) I remember being giddy with excitement, pestering for cereal that had some link to the film, and the night before going to see it I didn't sleep. These days they just seem to arrive play for a few weeks then dissappear only to pop up a couple of months later available to stream. I'm watching skull island tonight, I mention this because as per my point I was telling a work colleague this and he said " skull island? Never heard of it, is it an old film? " I mean this was a big release only this year.

There seems to be this view by some folks on the AJB that EON are a bunch of bumbling fools who have accidentally made an incredibly successful series of films over an unprecedented span of time. The folks at EON know what they are doing. They have gotten it right many more times than wrong. I am sure that Daniel Craig's indecision about returning (and his unfortunate wrist cutting quote) has made things a bit more complex and bumpy this time around. I don't like the long wait because I'm getting older and crankier by the day :)) . Craig or no Craig we will have Bond 25 in fall 2019 and the smart money would be on it being a real good one.

After seeing Dunkirk, if EON don't get Nolan to direct the next movie, they'll be missing one of the greatest opportunities in the history of the franchise. He's said in interviews how much he loves Bond, especially OHMSS. Before seeing Dunkirk, I didn't think he'd be right. I was never a Nolan fan.

But, Dunkirk is an absolute masterclass in suspense and action storytelling. Hands down one of the top ten greatest war movies ever made. And one of the greatest suspense movies I've ever seen. In interviews, Nolan admitted that he wanted to make a suspense movie. And he succeeded. 100 minutes passed in what felt like a half hour. Just a pile on of anticipation and spectacle.

If Nolan agrees to do the next Bond movie, well... Only great things can happen.

Never mind if DC comes back. Get Nolan. Then you'll see something really special.

"Kinetic intensity" was mentioned above as a key feature of Casino Royale. To me, Nolan can deliver that in spades. He just doesn't hold back in Dunkirk. There are moments where you can't believe what you're seeing. If he could bring that edge to a Bond movie again, the franchise would be reinvigorated, just like it was after Casino.

good points about the lack-of-event factor
all new movies are like that these days, if they don't break alltime boxoffice records the first weekend theyre gone from the theatres within the week, but then they all show up on dvd and nettflix within months ... its all just one big evergrowing back-catalog to sift through, there no longer much of a "now"

I'm not sure Bond benefits any more from a longer wait though
normal people do seem excited about every new Star Wars movie, and that's now an annual event, same when Jackson's Hobbit prequel trilogy came out
maybe the Bond franchise needs to put out more breakfast cereals and action figures, to build the hype? I know I still have the Lotus Esprit hot wheels collectible

I just watched Inception. One of the dream levels looks exactly like a modernised re-visioning of OHMSS's Piz Gloria scenes, much better than similar scenes in SPECTRE, though he didn't have to wrap any sort of a plot around these particular visuals (its dream within a dream within a...)

I too was never a Nolan fan thanks to his Batman movies. I thought his action scenes were darkly lit and incoherent. But based on all the rumours here I finally got round to watching The Prestige and Inception, and have Interstellar cued up for this weekend. These were both awesome films, clever bravura filmmaking, much better than Batman. Like previous Batman-director Burton, I think his own personal projects are the ones to watch, as opposed to the corporate franchise work that pays the bills.
That said, I imagine his attempt at a Bond film would be closer to Batman than to his personal projects. I cant imagine there being much magick or lucid dreaming in the next Bond film.

Lucky you watching Interstellar for the first time, wish I could experience it again for the first time. And yes I also would love a Nolan Bond film even though Skyfall was essentially one already.

There wasn't much " magick or lucid dreaming" in Dunkirk. Just expertly handled action sequences, which managed multiple times to squeeze every ounce of suspense out of each set piece. Very realistic, but also low on gore. Just perfect for Bond.
