They can't crank these things out every year. It's not 1963 anymore. The public domain thing means little, except for an online proliferation of fan films. No one in this day and age is going to sink 100 million into a competing film that's missing all the traditional trimmings.
There'll be big time directors lining up to make Bond movies in 2034. They'll be able to make the Bond movie they want without EON's interference.
I think some of us underestimate EON, especially the current generation with Barbara Broccoli calling the shots. There is a reason that Bond is far and away the most successful film franchise ever and has survived everything from lawsuits, studios going bankrupt, artistic/cultural trends, iconic Bond actors moving on, etc. One thing that Barbara, et al have shown is the willingness to shake things up and take a chance. Craig's tenure as Bond besides breathing new life into the franchise has made involvement in a Bond film more prestigious and it is now possible to attract a higher level of director. James Bond films are a worldwide tradition that gets handed down from one generation to the next. My father took me to Connery films, I introduced my son during PB's tenure and it goes on.
Bond movies used to be the thing that was leading the way, the type of movie to be copied, not jumping on the last passing band wagon.
This is nothing new. Bond has not been a leader since the 1960s. The Bond films have been following film trends significantly since the 1970s, such as blaxploitation in LALD, martial arts in TMWTGG and outer space in MR. Though in the 1970s Bond was the leader in stunts in film. Mission: Impossible is now the leader for stunts.
But I still agree with your post. Welcome!
Thanks for the welcome.
I agree that Bonds have adapted to fit film landscape. But in previous cases is was always a Bond movie through the prism of a film genre be it martial arts or blaxpoitation or sci fi. It just feel that now the references are a little too on the nose. Which is why i feel craigs films feel more like jumping on bandwagons than reflecting the cinematic landscape. Paticularly in the case of SP as i felt the retroactive world building to link spectre and blofeld to Craig's entire tenure was a little hamfisted in its attempt to bring the sort of multi dimensional world building that companies like marvel plan from the beginning. And that it comes across more obviously that the movies are junping through hoops to adapt to the filmic landscape because Craig's harder, rougher portrail of Bond that he signed up to play and began with CR doesnt gel as well now the stories have changed around him. An issue that Moore or Brosnan didnt have because their bonds had more of the entire cultural history of Bond in their portrayals and are therefore more acceptable (again this poster's oppinion) in lighter or darker or more restrained or more over the top movies than Craig.
I do conceed however that my oppinion could be down to living through the current filmic zeitgeist rather than looking back on it and I would think differently if i had grown up at a diffent time with a different Bond currently in cinemas.
Is it just me who thinks that Tom Hiddleston's supposed romance with Taylor Swift could damage his chances of getting Bond?
Bond actors have never been A-listers before getting the role and if it's true that he's dating Swift, then he'll be definitely in the lime light all the time and it runs of risk of the actor becoming bigger than the role, which isn't what Bond is about.

I don't think so. She will write a negative song about him when they break up however. -{

He can always shake if off.

Interestingly, THs meeting with Sam Mendes and Babs could have been a talk about being in series 4 of Penny Dreadful as Dr Moreau.
But I hope it's for Bond
Does Babs have anything to with that series ?:)
John Logan writes the series (and seems to be the driving creative force) and Mendes is an Executive Producer. As far as I can see, Barbara Broccoli has nothing to do with the show. Re Josh Hartnett as Bond: right age, decent look, tall but very much an American (married to a Brit however).

Thanks, but I knew all that...didn't think Babs had anything to do with it - but wanted to check -{
Interesting read in Hello magazine (surprisingly) about the Bond Girls party. Past Bond girls, Babs, and Roger Moore were all present.
Conspicuous by his absence was DC. When Naomi Harris was asked about his future in the franchise she refused to be drawn, but did state that she hopes she remains as Moneypenny.
Now, reading between the lines, that might mean a new Bond IS coming.
I wouldn't expect DC to be at anything like that even if there was no question he was coming back. The way things stand presently, I have the feeling that there is a plan "A" (Craig returns) and a Plan "B" (new actor) running concurrently. Rumours and circumstantial evidence seem to point to Plan "B" being the more likely scenario. As far as who that new actor could be, EON may not even know at this point.

Here's a talent alternative to future Bond actors who either grow old and flabby or too big for their britches, Andy Serkis!

Yeah this definitely seems to be what's going on. Not the first time either. Happened a couple times during Roger Moore's tenure.

So, Daniel Craig has walked away from the Bond role; Tom Hiddleston shot a Bond screen-test about a month ago at Pinewood Studios; Barbara Broccoli has offered Hiddleston the role; Hiddleston is thinking about it; apparently...

Old "news". That rumor (and it remains very much a rumour) has been around since this thread started. As far as Hiddleston mulling over taking the role, my guess if it was actually offered to him and the money wasn't insulting, Hiddleston would jump at the opportunity. For all intents and purposes Hiddleston is basically only known to the general public for his supporting, generally villain role in the Thor and Avenger films; one good Bond film makes him an international film star and household name. For an actor of Hiddleston's moderate stature, doing four or five Bond films would set him up for life and put him in a position to do pretty much anything he wanted at a relatively young age. Post-Bond for Pierce Brosnan may not be blockbusters and Oscars but he stars in or appears in at least two or three films a year and has his own production company. Not bad.

Some of you may have seen the Tom Hiddleston rumours heating up on various Facebook pages over the last few days.
Apparently, the word on the street is that Tom filmed a screen test for Bond around a month ago and that Barbara has offered him the job. He's apparently "thinking about it."
With all that said, we have it on very good authority that none of this is actually true. We obviously can't reveal our sources but from what we've been told AND what we've actually seen, we're confident it's all BS and Hiddleston isn't actually in the frame.
