    I thought 'Cod heads' was another nickname for Grimsby ?

    COD Army is Fleetwood...not sure of any others... :)

    I live in North Yorkshire and sometimes work over in East Yorkshire there the term cod head is used as a derogatory term for someone from Hull??

    Your correct Sir Miles show's you how much i follow football Cod Army is the nickname for my local team Fleetwood Town , struggling at the moment in devision 1 . Hoping for a scene in the next Bond film maybe James taking on a Fish & Chip shop magnate intent on world domination.

    Yes it is a coastal town about 7miles north of Blackpool , we have a ferry that runs between Fleetwood and Knott End only takes 5mins from there you could get a bus to Lancaster and then onto Morcambe . I would check first with travel websites as with a lot of things local authorities are cutting back, libraries and non essential stuff and the ferry could be one to go .

    Yes i think it's called The Midland i believe it's been used in a few Films and TV series including Poirot . It's had a complete makeover. Your in a good place to explore the Lake District if you have time .

    Am I correct in saying Fleetwood is a coastal town? I've been hoping to do a trip through Blackpool - the town south of it (?) & up into Morcambe - the latter to see Eric's statue. It is many years since I was in Blackpool, late '60s perhaps when I went with my parents.

    You could include Lytham St. Annes on that journey and see the statue to Les Dawson -{

    The sad thing is, I really loved Blackpool.

    Many happy day trips and the annual visit to see the lights. Always a treat.

    I took my daughter there a few years ago and it was just awful.

    Yeah...I still like to go to see the lights...but Blackpool really is part it's best :#

    I took the kids to Blackpool a couple of years ago..... I won't be going back walking along the front with a 5 year old and her 6 year old cousin stepping over vomit and trying to avoid the drunk swearing stag and hen party's was just awful. Im not a fan of swearing in front of children or having my wife leared at by gangs of men. I had all on keeping my fists in my pockets! Sadly Blackpool is no longer a nice family friendly day out. Its OK if you want to get drunk, have a fight, go to a strip bar then catch an std :o

    That sounds a great shame ,as Blackpool was the jewel in the north for the working classes to take a well earned holiday from the mills and pits ,it sounds now it has taken a turn for the worse ,sorry to hear that .

    Re swearing I never ever allowed anyone to swear in front of my wife or children - I didn't do it so no one else could. Sadly using "F" or "C" every other word is commonplace nowadays.
    Yes in the daytime, it's the one time I actually thought the smoking law was flawed as large groups gather on the promenade outside the bars and pubs to smoke. Which kind of adds to the non child friendly atmosphere.
    I was taken once a year as a small child to see the lights, it's amazing how far the place has fallen in thirty-thirty five years.
    Saying that though York is going the same way on a Friday and Saturday and again due to the stag and hen parties, it's still a pleasant cultured city the rest of the time though.

    Whilst Southport is still a nice area, it is dead now as far as a seaside resort goes.

    It has gone from another vibrant, family orientated place to nothing but shops areas.

    They closed the funfair (which was pretty good), sent the best rides to Blackpool then decided about a year later to open it again but it is nothing compared to what it was. Southport had gardens, a lido, bowling greens, a model village etc. The pier is still there but a lot of the front has been replaced with shopping parks.

    It's such a shame these places are all left to rot but maybe there's not the market for that kind of day out or holiday. Kids are more sophisticated these days and continental holidays are the norm.

    That's a shame ... I'm sure that was none of our intentions!!

    It was just Blackpool that has changed considerably. There are some lovely places in the area, though you would need someone who still lives ether to give more detailed advice.

    It was certainly not my intention to put you off stag, like all things it's relative to your sensibilities if you'd enjoy the place Blackpool has become. But personally I would rather visit areas such as the lake district.

    Stag, I would strongly recommend you visit Liverpool. There is still enough culture there to entertain you. Southport, up the coast, is still a nice place to visit of you get the timing right - comedy festival, food show, flower show, air show, etc., Lytham is also nice to visit. Blackpool needs a miss really. Head into the Lake District or... the Yorkshire Dales, or... cross the country to Whitby and buy my books :D

    I go to Whitby a lot, it's a fantastic drive over from pickering. We normally enjoy the beach at Sandsend then head into Whitby for a late lunch. I can completely recommend a trip this part of the country.

    Liverpool has had a resurgence in the past few years and there is plenty to do there. Busy and vibrant these days with the Albert Dock and it's museums being the main draw.

    Southport is still a nice place to visit, just not the seaside powerhouse it once was.

    Having said all that, Yorkshire is lovely and that's were I would personally head.

    Never been to Southport, but I thought Formby was beautiful. Love the dunes.
