Bond clothing and responses

Hey guys,

I just wanted to find out from others what kind of responses they get when wearing Bond clothing out and about.

I know that every time I put on a piece from the DC era I am guaranteed to get some girl to complement my appearance or some guy to ask me wear I bought it.

Example:

I wore my TF sharkskin grey suit, TF shirt, Tetburys, and PTS tie to an event recently and was complemented at least 15X about my attire.

Hell I decided to wear my LVC menlo and about 4 guys at work asked me wear they could buy it.

Thanks,
Nafets

Off top of my head - had complements on my TF suit, Billy Reid peacoat but more commonly my CJs (especially Skyes)

Same suit as you also :)

I've gotten a number of compliments on my Barbour To Ki To with people asking where to get one. I can't bring myself to tell them what it cost.

Like nafets I've found the Menlo gets attention.

My C&J Islays also almost always draw praise.

I'm a rural guy so don't wear suits as much as I would elsewhere (alas). :(

Definitely get the most comments when wearing the Menlo... One evening I ran into the local grocery to pick up a few things.. was wearing the Menlo and my enjoying death shirt (Hart version).. kid bagging my groceries says, " you remind me of James Bond".. had to chuckle.. told him I was pretty sure that it was only my shirt and jacket which reminded him of Bond...

Had various different comments on all sorts of pieces -
Barbour coat comes out when camping or outdoor country and everyone loves it , well suited.
Canada goose lodge hoody has had loads of positive remarks and that "looks like a bond coat"
Where did he wear that :))
Npeal roll neck has been recognised the most , especially how cold the UK has been.
By the far the best has been the spectre watch 300 , wow love that and is that the one :007)
Dying to try a TF suit but it will have to wait.

My various John Smedley items get a lot of compliments. Something that has really surprised me is how much people seem to love my Dents Skyfall gloves. I mean yeah they're great, but I never thought minimalist black leather gloves could garner so much attention.

More so than the Bond items, I find people are usually fascinated by my Girl With The Dragon Tattoo stuff (which I wear much more frequently). I have some items from production, but even 'normal' things off of ebay get compliments. I guess lots of people love a nice cardigan.

Only once has something been identified by a stranger as being from Bond, and that was the Skyfall Barbour. However, I've had lots of compliments from men and women on the Levi's Menlo, the Varvatos and a couple of the Tom Ford sunglasses.

I have been told that I look very 'Bond-like' but that's less to do with the clothes and more to do with the PPK I wave around a lot :007)

I get that a lot too, but mostly when I slap colleagues on the butt telling them it is time for man-talk. Also, they usually say I'm a pig and not Bond-like, but there is a pig in TLD so that's Bond related, right? :))

On topic: I haven't got a lot of 'complete' Bond outfits so I don't get comments on that. However, I do notice that people aren't shy when complimenting you if you dress well. I often wear a suit to work, not because I have to but because I feel (and one might say look) good in one, and people really notice when you put in an effort. A few times people have complimented me on my SMP300 but much more often people say something about my Seiko Orange Monster. The other thing people notice with me are polos, I was quite disappointed with de Riviera polo by Sunspel, but Orlebar Brown makes polos that work really well with me. So maybe not a Bond outfit in the literal sense, but a dark blue polo and jeans (Lee 101 for me) with a pair of brown desert boots and a pair of Persol sunglasses is a great outfit for me in the spring/summer.

My old Seamaster Professional (same as Casino Royale screen version) used to attract unwanted attention due to its blingy bracelet. I was asked once if it was a Rolex!

Was on a train one day and this lady came and sat down in front of me. We started talking about education and fashion. She quickly understood that by the cut of my suit I went to some prestigious university in England and that, because of my attire, I actually think human beings dress like I was. Still, she thought that I wear it with such disdain. She saw my watch and though it was Rolex although it was an Omega. Nevertheless, she found it beautiful.

We ended up finishing our glasses of wine, and, as she left, she mentioned that she will be keeping her eyes off my perfectly formed arse.

I finally learned that she was an accountant, and that she had imaginations.

    Quite a train ride :)) -{ 8-)

Funny you should say that, because I met this right moose that thought I was wearing an Omega. Needless to say, I booted her up the bum and told her to get out of a First Class carriage that she clearly hadn't paid for. Bitch!

That's the whole point I feel for me to buy this stuff in the first place and for fashion in general, to make me feel good and confident while out and about and elicit a hopefully positive response. Its always nice to get a positive response towards anything you do and what you wear is no different. Its why many of us are in this hobby. Even if I am sometimes disillusioned by the frivolous nature of this hobby, in what can be interpreted as just a pursuit of materialism.

It's not a frivolous hobby, and there are so many ways to look at it besides materialism. If dressing well makes you feel more confident, that's a great reason to dress well. Dressing like Bond helps us connect with other people (particularly here), and making connections with people over fun things has a lot of value. Dressing well can help further your life though people who judge those who dress well. A boss may think more highly of an employee who dresses well because it shows that person takes his or her job seriously. A prospective mate will certainly judge someone on his or her appearance. People show more respect to me because I dress well, and it just makes life easier and more pleasant. I don't think it's right that people judge others by the way they dress, but people do. Through dressing like Bond we can take full advantage of that!

My view is that there are certain pieces which were chosen for the film that I really like, not because Bond wears it or because I'm trying to feel more confident, its because I like it and wouldn't have discovered it otherwise. (I mean really, who actually goes through TF's latest catalog for ties, or checking to see if Neil Barrett or Billy Reid had a piece that caught their fancy?)

And this has nothing to do with materialism, why would I want to go to church looking like a self-abnegated bum?

There is a point in looking professional or like you care about your appearance. Sure you could spend a lot of money and look like a Rick Owens model or whatever, but there is a respect that is given to someone you see that can dress themselves in a presentable manner.

I mentioned this in another thread a while ago: I think this is the diffierence between the collector, the imitator and the "inspired by". Personally, I have no issues with the collector, who wants the exact pieces used in the films for his/her personal pleasure. I see very little difference between this and stamp collecting, for example. Again, just personally, I don't subscribe to the imitator mindset, wanting to assemble an exact replica of a particular Bond film outfit so I can look just like 007 in X film on a day to day basis.

I consider myself part of the "inspired by" camp. 007 is almost like a gateway drug into men's style, and as Nafets47 says, it's a way to discover new brands, individual pieces, or particular looks that can help take us up a notch style wise. As Matt S says, there are a lot of benefits to looking our best, and few downsides, unless we get caught up in spending more than we can afford. Just my 2 cents.

While I'm not yet employed, I do have a couple of shirts and khakis that look close enough to Bond's style.

I think it's a mix of all 3 and never really 1 or the other: part of it is to elicit the same reaction in people as to when we see Bond in that suit in Istanbul ("Man, that guy looks awesome, like he knows what he's doing: that's a badass....") or charcoal suit when he meets Q for the first time and gets reinstated. Or Perla De Las Dunas outfit or a really eye catching tie. Or Brunello outfit.

Another part is the collecting aspect, for sure.

But, although that's a cool idea, I don't think I'll ever afford any of this stuff.

Which is why the replicas are so fun to look for and find and post.

And it is just as much a gateway to a more sophisticated style of dress, as you said, canoe2.

Well said, Matt. While I have always taken care with how I dress, I do tend to dress for my day and if I am going somewhere or doing something that requires a more professional appearance, that's what I sport. Without exception, when I dress well - and that doesn't necessarily mean a suit or a tie - I most definitely have more confidence whether in a professional or personal capacity. I have had people describe me as entering a room as if I "owned it." That certainly has never been an intention of mine and I am someone who intensely dislikes arrogance or pretence, but I know I feel mor confident when I dress well and likely convey that confidence. I therefore believe that dressing well does give an edge socially, personally and professionally.

Bravo gents for your posts, I think if you look the part and you talk it, people will assume you can walk it. I've always found a sharp outfit that fits perfect opens a lot more doors, and more often than not those outfits are certainly Bond inspired looks.
I too feel much more confident when dressed well and I find people much more giving of their time when you have that quiet confidence in yourself - it needs to be 'quiet' though - having an attitude instantly belittles whatever outfit you're sporting.
And why shouldn't it be Bond? There are worse people to be inspired by. It's important to have heroes.
