Falconer, O’Connor, and Tom Ford

So this all started with this picture….

A screen used Spectre suit with a rare shot of the inner factory label and its designation as “fit F”. Now I was intimately familiar with all the Base fits that TF previously offered (A, B, D etc) but was a little hazy on Fit F and was initially very perplexed as all my O’Connor skyfall suits had come in Fit Y (which I thought was the definitive O Connor Fit). After talking with Paolo it seemed that Fit F was “no longer available” and that all the Spectre suits would come in fit Y.

So I kinda just let it go for a while until I was doing research and came up with an early report by Mantis stating that Bond would wear the Falconer suit in Skyfall. After doing some digging I found that Falconer suit was designated as Basic Base F or Fit F. Now I was intrigued because I was getting somewhere…

I know that Falconer was the 1960s era style suit Ford designed for the character of George Falconer played by Colin Firth in A Single Man . A suit with slim lapels, straight (as opposed to slanted) shoulder seams—something I thought TF NEVER did but I was wrong, and belt loops instead of waist adjusters. One of the most significant changes was the 3 button cuffs. I had ALWAYS wondered why the opening Skyfall PTS suit had three button cuffs when the rest of his suits had the standard 5 button cuff like most other TF suits have. This now seems to explain it.

This diagram was shown to be what Bond wears in Skyfall and like many of our esteemed members pointed out, it lacked the 3-2 button front yet retained the Falconer’s narrow lapel and signature 3 button cuffs.

The origin of the Falconer suit design comes from collaboration between TF himself and the film’s costume designer Arianne Phillips. She comments here that “Tom has a factory in Italy that makes men's clothing. I . . . found all these '60s vintage suit types for Colin Firth's character, George. We looked at the different shapes and different details -- a collar from one and buttons from another -- and we fashioned together what we thought would be appropriate silhouettes, which were then taken to the factory in Italy.”

While not breaking news in any way, I just find this fascinating. It seems that Bond was in all likelihood going to wear a Falconer but subtle changes (like waist adjusters, 3-2 roll etc) caused a new suit to be created, the O’ Connor. It also means that Bond's current "shrunken" look is based on designs from the 1960s and are amalgamations between different suit designs.

I personally have never tried the Falconer and was wondering if any other members had a chance to play with this suit. Would be interesting to know if its just the same as the O connor fit or fundamentally different in some way.

As a avid fan of TF suits i just like to know the "in's and out's" of his different cuts and just think its cool that Bond's current suit look (whether one likes it or not) wasnt just pulled out of thin air but has roots in an entirely different film.

Interesting research! The "shrunken" look has nothing to do with the 1960s. That was Jany Temime wanting something "iconic for 2012" and putting Daniel Craig in the wrong size. The Falconer is meant to fit well and not pull. When you see Colin Firth in the Falconer suit, it fits well. Even for "Fit Y" there are different styles, so I don't think that Craig's suits have all that much to do with the Flaconer suit. Do you know what the "Fit" of Craig's own Skyfall suits is labeled? I know they are a size "48F" as listed by the Christie's action, so I'm guessing the "F" that means it could be a "Fit F" since I don't believe "F" has a length meaning. The suits Tom Ford was selling for Spectre were "Fit Y", not "Fit F" like Craig's are as you show above. And I wonder if the O'Connor suits in Skyfall and Spectre fit differently from each other, or if it's only Craig's body that's different. The full button 3 in Skyfall vs the 3-roll-2 in Spectre means there's at least something different between the those suits.

The navy sharkskin spectre suit above is an actual screen used one from an auction that was posted here. They also sold the black herringbone Windsor he wore in the Rome funeral scenes. And the tag clearly designates the fit as Fit F which vexed me because Fit Y is the O connor suits. Interesting about the 48F. That also could stand for Falconer, never really thought about it.

Just to be clear im not saying DC wore a falconer. He def wore an O connor suit. I just think its interesting that the falconer design seems to be what the O connor is based on.

"Fit F" and "Fit Y" are fits, whilst "O'Connor" and "Falconer" are styles? And perhaps the fits don't always correspond to the styles?

I always assumed that "fits" or "bases" had corresponding names. Base A (fit A) Windsor. Base B: Regency. Fit Y: O'Connor. Base (fit) F: Falconer etc.

Ive never seen a Base B Windsor (but thats not to say they dont exist)

One thing they told me at the Tom Ford shop was that the Windsor suits sold as part of the Spectre collection had the same fits as the O'Connor suits rather than the typical Windsor fit. And they still said "Base A", even though it had the slimmer fit. We have Daniel Craig's O'Connor suit labeled "F" and the shop's O'Connor suit labeled "Y", but the style is exactly the same. Only the fit, I'm guessing, is different. It's all rather confusing and I can't seem to make it out. The salespeople at the shops don't know anything more than what they are selling, so they're not going to have an answer for this.

Hmmm thats very interesting! I was told that the windsor fit had been "updated" when they changed from bases to fits but when asked what specifically was changed, the guys at TF simply said "they made it slimmer". Lol
Interesting and yes totally confusing. Maybe i will sneak into the zegna factory and see whats really going on over there :))
