I think under trump the US will weaken the sanctions against Russia, and more troubling is that Europe will end up being forced to lift certain sanctions also. Putin already believes he is untouchable and cares little for the welfare of his own people.

I think the sanctions against Russia has reminded Putin that he isn't intouchable. Russia has a lower GDP than Spain, and the sanctions has hit his country hard.

I agree but he is a man who cares little for his own people suffering due to those sanctions, economic sanctions are less effective against communist countries.

Yes Putin cares little about his own people and they highly approve him so far.

The only way to weaken his reign is when things are getting worse and the approval rates for him and his gang sink.

he's now just u turned on stepping back from his business interests, which he was doing to avoid conflict of interests, now that seems unimportant to him, can you really have a president making decisions who has vested business interests?

I don't believe he ever said he was going to fully step back from his business interests. He said before he was going to put his children in charge, which isn't good enough.

"The Czar is good, but his governors are evil" said Russian farmers in the past. Putin has managed to pull off the same trick, but he must supply basic economic and social stability to remain in power.
Chriscoop: today's Russia isn't communist. Putin uses communist symbols such as Stalin, but only as symbols of nationalism, power and stability.

a common observation is that in countries with strong leaders, the normal people stand in line with their leader when things are getting bad. You just need to tell them that this is all the fault of the evil west etc.

Just see how bad it is for people in North Korea and how propganda makes them love Fatty Kim.

Things must get really really bad until they realise that their leader won't help them and they stand up against him.

Would you consider Russia a true democracy then 24? Maybe not in name but communism is alive and kicking in Russia, putin is now positioned as a dictator and has even bolstered and reorganised his security forces to quell any uprising by the populus

Russia is obviously not a democracy. The regime calls the system "controled/guided democracy." They go through the motions with elections, a parliament etc. While Russia isn't as authoritarian as the Soviets Union was, the country is clearly not a real democracy. Most of the press followed the government line and true oposition politicians live difficult and sometimes short lives. What you must remember is that there are more types of authoritarian regimes than communism. It's worth noteing that the current regime idealizes Stalin, but not Lenin. Stalin is used as a symbol of a strong and stabile Russia. Lenin on the other hand toppled the Czarist regime. This could give Russians wrong ideas, so Lenin is no hero to Putin.

If you look at the economy, Russia isn't communist. They have a stock exchange, huge companies and many billionaires. There is a larger element of state control of the economy than current western economies, but it's still a form of capitalism. The display of wealth is even more vulgar than in the west. This is very different from the communist Soviet with total state control of the economy (other than the black market) and a pretence of social equality.

Now I have some questions for you, Cheld. Some new and some I have asked before:
    - Do you agree that what we know about Trump's policy towards Russia is to Putin's advantage?
    - Do you think Tillerson is suited to be the Secretery of State, given his very close political, personal and economic ties to the Putin regime?
    - You claimed sanctions have "a nasty habit"of turning into wars. Can you mention any examples of this, other than Imperial Japan 75 years ago?
    - Do you think the sanctions against Russia should be lifted, even as the illegal Russian intervention in Ukraine continues?

Please reply to the questions, and not just post counterquestions. :)

Believe it or not, I usually want interesting debates about politics when I'm on this thread. It might be smart not being confrontational now and then, Higgins.

In this spirit I offer a conservative joke:
A conservative representative was taking a leak at the parliament men's room. As a socialist representative enters, the conservative finishes quicly and zips up. "Why the hurry?" asked the socialist.
"In my experience as soon as you socialists see something large, well functioning and private, you tax it." replied the conservative :))

Not sure what is 'confrontional' with a reminder that replies are still open to your questions.

I can safely say, that I had one or two more confrontional posts in the past :D
