The Bond of the novels has a short life expectancy and wants to spend down any savings--but on cars, entertainment and a Scottish housekeeper.
When Boothroyd tut-tuts over his Beretta with, "We can do better, sir," Bond is reminded of the first time he went to a high-end tailor. Comfortable, evergreen wear was Bond's choice in the books. He didn't like lace shoes, tuxedos and fancy dress balls.
Didn't Tatiana make a comment in the FRWL novel to Bond regarding the fact that he wasn't wearing cologn and he responded with something about how English mend don't need to wear cologn because "we" bathe. I remember something along those lines in FRWL, and I think it was on the train. I'll have see if I can find it. Wasn't sure if anyone else remembered something like that. I might be getting it all wrong or backwards, but it is inline with the whole Floris issue, so I thought I would bring it up.
Tatiana: "But, it is odd that you in the west do not use perfume. All our men do."
Bond: "We wash.
It also states that:
"She approved of the fact that he put no oil on his hair."
This was said right after:
"Bond washed and shaved under the amused eyes of Tatiana."
There are other mentions of Bonds grooming habits in other novels, if my memory serves me correctly, but this is the only reference to the type of "scents" Bond does or does not wear (as far as I can remember). I always interpreted this to mean that the novel Bond does not wear perfume of any kind.

I'm curious to know too. It still had an old-man smell two years ago.
Since I already have a Le Chat Noir, looks like I have a never ending supply of Floris No. 89. Quite the money saver. ) ) )
Honestly I hate wearing scents of any kind and actively avoid perfumed soaps.
