First of all, I don't claim to be knowledgeable about Star Trek. I considered giving that impression, but I would blow my cover in no time anyway ...
They are making ST: Discovery next year. I understand they would like to cast a black woman, but who knows?
My favourite is Gina Torres (Suits, Serenity)

What is your take on this?
Do you have any favourites when it comes to other crew members?
I would like to see Idris Elba or or Lucy Lui as captains. Perhaps Nathan Fillion too ...

Seems to carry a lot of authority, in whatever he says. As well as being a fantastic
Actor. -{
Or
Dame Maggie Smith, I'm sure she'd love the chance to go kicking some alien ass,
After all that Downton Abby drama.
But she obviously is a good enough actor. After seeing her in Downton Abby we know she has a commanding presens and she comes accross as smart, most likely because she is. So..... send Dame Maggie Smith where no 80 year old British acting legend of stage and screen as gone before!
Good idea. Completely agree with you.
The character is confirmed female.
Any actors who have been recent big hitters in films can be disregarded.
As this is tv Sci Fi, there will be a cap on who is affordable.
Personally, I'd focus on anyone who has been in, but no longer commited to Game Of Thrones.
Either that, or anyone who has done well in existing Bryan Fuller productions or is Canada based.
Idris Elba is a non starter. He was just in Trek 3.2 as the baddie.
Mads Mikklesen could fit nicely. - Depending how much screen time the Captain has.
If they go for someone in GoT I'd say several of them are too young or "too foreign"to command a ship, Lena Heady (queen Cercei) or Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) seem to be the best candidtes. I just saw Michelle Fairley in "Suits" and she looks like an interesting candidate.

Could Glenn Close be a good candidate to command a starship? I think so.
