Id say the plating was fooked on that lighter, I don't think that cleaning it will help with the problem, it needs re-plating.

The lighter did the same on my GG not long after I bought it new. Not sure what caused it as it was only handled once when I first put it together and wiped it with a very soft cloth after putting it in it's stand.
