What makes the Tom Ford 108 so good

I know the TF108 gets a lot of mentions so apologies if a thread succinctly covers them.It is with a degree of trepidation that I raise them given that a member who sought to sell a pair ultimately got banned recently .
I only have the TF Henrys on other posts members have been really helpful on the Markos and Snowdons .
So what makes the 108s so good on paper look similar to the much maligned Markos?
A few years ago I bought the Oakley Pit Boss on the basis that they were the apogee of Oakleys pretty expensive but have held/ appreceated in value .
Any comments clues much appreciated . Cheers

There's a few reasons really, the 108s in the right colour combo are pretty hard to come by, also just look at them, they were well built (though not child proof) had leather ends on the arms and should only have come in bond branded packaging but like all tom ford sunglasses cases that gold lettering rubs off pretty damn quick! all in all they've attained that desirable status.

I have never heard any bad reviews about the 108's quality. And, as Chriscoop points out, their rarity hikes the price. I have never owned them, but recently acquired the OP Airmans that the 108's were modeled after. For me, the design is what makes these glasses so good. DC's many looks in QoS where he wears the 108's are iconic, and I think the glasses had a lot to do with that. If you can't find some 108's, go for the OP's, as OP makes better sunglasses than TF any day of the week, and OP is a Bond brand (recall Brosnan's own pair used in DaD). The OP's are usually about the same price as the 108's, but can sometimes be found for less.

I have a pair of OP Airman and can say they are great sunglasses. You can find the OP for less than the 108s, especially if you don't care about screen accurate color.

Magnoli's 108 replicas should be available this month.

I have both Airman and TF108.

Never wear the TF108 (maybe once in all the years I have owned them).

They sure have become iconic In the DC era - classic pic of DC running in the desert with them etc on top of the hotel etc however in reality I would not say they are well made (are they even polarised!? Honestly cant remember but dont think they are!)

Amazed how they go for so much if im honest!!

I agree. The Persol 2720s are comfortable, not heavy at all. The Persol 2244s are quite heavy.

And I find the OP Airman very light and comfortable as well

Like Welshboy I also have both - in my opinion the airman are much better quality but i like the look more of the TF108.
An Optician explained to me recently OP had a falling out with Tom Ford about the style of the TF108 and as a result Tom Ford had to stop making them and will never be allowed to produce them again which may explain the limited number vs. the Marko etc and the fact the price is going up.

I wear them quite often as I managed to buy a 'spare pair' for $150 not long after they were released in case of 'accidents' - I've been very careful with my original pair so I now have an unworn pair with stickers on them and labels etc which seem to have appreciated in price!

I've also just ordered a pair of Indy's for whenever my children are near me....

Ha - that would be nice.
I haven't even looked at the cardboard boxes - presume if they are both correct I will have two branded boxes - if I do I'll send you one - I only need to keep one pair perfect given I wear the others and the case on that pair has nearly lost all the logo etc.

Ill have a dig around too. When I bought my Markos from Harvey Nichs, we were chatting about Bond stuff, asst casually said he had a spare Bond branded box and case if I wanted it ( for free in addition to the normal Markos unbranded box and case). Couldnt believe my luck. Think I had a plain box too with my 108s, if not ill let you know P.
