All right, this is the last time I'm asking for help, I found a dinner jacket made by Zara (velvet, beautiful dark navy, over 150$ dollars in the US, well bellow 100$ in Poland which is odd) but since I trust Matt S's judgement, the jacket might be too small. Now I know he is a purist and I absolutely respect his opinion but to be honest for that night I need to look good but not necessarily tip-top when it comes to some rules. The jacket ends mid-bum (no idea how to say it in other way :)) ) so I'm just wondering if that looks very stupid or it's not really eye catching.

Please excuse the mess in my room and the fact that I never smile :/ If all of you will agree it's too small, I will return the jacket (HOWEVER most women I asked told me I look great without mentioning the length!).

That's the problem with all Zara jackets, as they are all too short. But I have another one in sky blue and it actually is maybe 1cm longer, never noticed it being too short and no one ever told me that. So that's the question - if people will noticed (bear in mind - students, not experts in tailoring)

Ask yourself this: Do you want to look like a student, or do you want to look like James Bond?

Well true :/ But a lot of time will still have to pass until I can afford a perfect tailored tuxedo. I think I will return it next week in that case.

Buy second-hand. I bought an Aquascutum dinner suit second-hand for the same as what you'd get new at Zara. You'll probably have to settle for black, but you will look like James Bond.

I echo that. As a student I bought a dinner jacket from Oxfam, it was a beautiful black shawl collared jacket, had obviously cost a lot once but I bought it for a few pounds. That was long before eBay. Buy second hand and if needs be get it tailored.

I returned the jacket this morning. I will try to find a used tuxedo, I might also look for another velvet jacket - chance is someone somewhere will have one in the correct lenght.

    Thank you gentlemen for your help. It was the right choice to make. -{

When asking for someone’s opinion there are a few things to keep in mind if you want an honest answer.

-What is their investment in you? In other words what do they have to lose if you walk around in a silly looking jacket? Unless she is your girlfriend who is accompanying you to the party and who might feel weird if she goes with someone and is bold enough to say so, expect a lot of “yeah you look great, see you at the party” *turns around and starts sniggering to her friends* responses.

-What are they wearing? Do they look more like Julia Roberts at the start or at the end of Pretty Woman?

-After you ask them for their opinion, do you give them the same stare as the one in your picture? Because if that is the case I would lie to you too. :))

All joking aside, I think you picked a good place to ask for advice but in the end it comes down to this question: What do you feel comfortable in? Bear in mind that a dinner jacket is more than just the jacket. You will need a pair of pants in exactly the same colour with a satin side strip on the legs, you will be amazed at how many different colours of black there are, let alone midnight blue. You will also need an evening dress shirt with French cuffs and a good pair of black oxfords. If you don’t mind walking around in a mismatched outfit, go ahead but if you know in your hearts heart that you will only feel good when you are wearing proper black tie; go big or go home. Second hand could be a great option as stated before.

There is another option however, 75 euros (cheaper if you search online) buys you one of these. At least then everybody knows that you know that you are taking the piss. They are called opposuits and are available in some very "interesting" suitings.

Give you a tip on jacket length my tailor gave me - when wear or try on a suit type jacket if you stand up straight, let your arms hang naturally and clench your fist or curl fingers into your palm, the hem of the jacket should meet them at the same place - then you know the jacket is the right length for you.

Works a treat and been using it ever since!

    Good luck

    Cheers :007)

This works for a lot of people, but not everyone's arm length is the same proportion to their height.

Yeah you are right we are all unique and each to his own, but I seem to have disproportionately longer arms to my height and since i used this it worked OK for me in most cases. Its a rule of thumb which is a good yardstick!

No good to the question does my arrse look big in this - to which there is no feasible answer for a man

    Cheers :007)

I found a Ted Baker suit for like 3 pounds (they retail for like 600 quid). I will get the jacket tailored because it's a little bit to big, otherwise it's perfect and I think I will go with that one :) Thank you for your help gentlemen!! Looking for a decent outfit in a second hand was definitely a good idea :)

Glad you found something good! Unfortunately I have terrible luck second-hand because I wear the size that Daniel Craig tried to fit into in his last two Bond films. Most men in America aren't that slim.
