There was an actor who supposedly was to step in if Roger Moore suddenly left - was it Billington?
I don't know if it's true and and if that sort of thing would work now.
Wally Cox
He was actually Connery's understudy, not Moore's. Cox died before Moore was Bond.

My gut along with what tiny little bit we do know tells me that EON is not at one of those "where do we go from here" moments like after DAD. I think Plan A has always been to do Bond 25 (or even 25 and 26) with Craig and finish up the Blofeld/SPECTRE storyline. Plan B would go into effect if Craig opts not to return and a new Bond actor would be cast (the Tom Hiddleston being paid to be on standby theory could be true but it wouldn't surprise me if there are several other actor under consideration). I don't believe that EON and Bond 25 are some rudderless ship. Certainly a deal with a new distributor could be dependent on whether Craig returns or not; but there will be a deal with a new distributor (James Bond talks and bulls..t walks ) )
I think if there is an actor on standby, its not someone with the calibre of Hiddelston.
Dan Stevens or Aidan Turner are my two hopefuls.
With a 'straight into the action' storyline like TLD or GE would be awesome.

I think what it means is that many of us think that Bond needs a new direction, since the producers seem to have put themselves into a corner. I personally feel that after Spectre I am slowly losing interest in modern Bond too, and at the same time appreciate the classic 007 movies more.

Nobody puts Bond in a corner ) Seriously, there is no reason to believe that EON can't correct the weaknesses of SPECTRE in the next film. One must always remind themselves....it's a movie. A good script, a new director, and producers who tend to rebound well from a mediocre effort is a good recipe.
It's not Bond, it's the producers... and yes, there is always a way out, so let's hope for a great movie! I'd rather be positively than negatively surprised, so for the time being I'll keep me hopes low though.
2019....and Craig will be back I say. Not that I want that, just saying.
2023....and Craig will be back I say. I rather break this glass and slash my wrists than still watching new Bond films at that point.
What are you doing here then?
He's just saying that Craig's Bond is at its limit. He's almost 50, we've seen him in his prime with Casino Royale (my favorite Bond movie) and in another great in Skyfall. As others have said, the writers kind of dug themselves into a hole with Spectre. Where do they go from here?
If Craig's coming back, let's make sure it's the last movie this time. If it's going to be two movies, then as David "Mantis" alluded to in one of his theories they need to film it back to back.
I love Daniel Craig but as hard as it is we have to eventually move on.

Must've been Don Knotts.
He may have been dead but he would have came back if offered the Bond role ) -{
Who wouldn't return from the dead to play Bond though? )

Depends upon whom you speak to...and who you trust...
