Firearm used in Octopussy and Never Say Never Again

The Walther P5 makes its appearance for the first time in Octopussy, the second time in Never Say Never Again.

When Octopussy was released, the Walther P5 was new and was in police trials with several German and other European police agency.

The Walther P5 was accepted for service along with SIG-Sauer's P6 (P225) and Heckler und Koch's P7.

This example has the very rare single line roll marking; Walther banner P5. The vast majority of the Walther P5's produced have a two line roll marking that also has Walther Waffenfabrik Ulm/Do on the second line.

This example also wears the rare factory walnut grips that was an optional purchase except on the commemorative 100 Jahr, and P5 Lang models. It is a 1992 model AC coded which is near the end of the run for the P5. My other P5 is an '83 model, and before that i had an '81 model. The series ended in the 103000's and this model is 101036.

I picked this up last summer from a private seller.

    Please, are the guns used in the films real guns or deactivated only to shoot blanks?

    Nice piece but to me it's just not a PPK which is Bonds side arm of issue/ choice. There are certain items which are typical Bond like PPK, Omega watch and sharp suits wrapped naturally in an Aston Martin.

    Cheers :007)

    They are real weapons which have been modified to fire blanks. This basically means the bore of the barrel is restricted to a much smaller size so sufficient back pressure can be built up to throw the slide back and eject a spent cartridge case much as the weapon would operate when firing a live round.

    This is the actual P5 used by Sean Connery on Never Say Never Again and Roger Moore on Octopussy -{

    How did they come to use the same gun in both films?

    The same industry armourers however neither production company knew this. When Roger was using the P5 in the UK Sean was using a different P5 overseas hired in from a French armoury. It's all documented if you know where to look :D

    P5 compacts were issued as personal protection weapons from the early 80s to members of the Ulster Defence Regiment, in 1992 Cpl Eric Glass, doing his full time job as a council dog warden, put his to good use :v

    Does that serial number begin with 103 or 105? What is the date code on the right side of the frame above the trigger guard?

    Huh. Now we know where the P99's ramped trigger guard comes from. Just noticed that.

    Very accurate if not bulky guns. Have had both the P5 and P5 compact.

    While on the subject of the P5, there are conflicting reports on who/where the shoulder holster that Moore used in Octopussy came from. The literature for the holster in the Christie's auction says it was made in house by production staff.

    But there is a 2011 American Handgunner article where the proprietor of Lawman Leather claims to have made the holster.

    Here's a thought. First off EON/Cubby issue a letter mentioning a holster!! but who is to say it is the actual holster? With respect that very same website lists a Brozza (Brosnan) Galco and it is the wrong model! Additionally Stembridge Gun rentals had no involvement with Goldeneye period! :s

    It is unlikely at that time that a commercially made holster was available for the P5 much as a commercially made holster was not available for the P99 therefore they/production usually turned to BS who has now retired and passed the baton on so to speak!

    As a side note I cannot ever recall a holster of that type in the armoury. Back in 1983 there was no Archive so when a bespoke holster completed on production it was returned to the armoury it was "hired" from along with its type specified weapon -{

    I've never heard of a Brozza Galco. I have several Galco holsters but that model is not one of theirs. X-(

    It's this one....

    Never seen anywhere near a Bond film. The harness connection is completely wrong for the screen used Executive and a much newer version. I'd be very wary of anything off that site.

    How did it attach in the film? I never paid that close attention (which you would think I would have :o ) It looks like an Exec. holster in the hotel room to me. btw, Galco discontinued that holster. The clip Galco used was way to beefy for that rig anyway. It's huge and heavy!!

    I should call up the guy that owns Lawman and ask if he took/has any pics of the one he made for the film. I don't know him, but if I introduce myself, maybe he would look, or hang up on me. hehehe
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,535MI6 Agent
    It is an Exec, but the harness was attached much lower at the muzzle end on the ScreenUsed version.

    Oh, Ok. I thought you meant that the elastic was attached differently. They would have put the rear attachment tab on the holster lower to raise the muzzle and lower the grip. Usually you don't want to go below the center line of the slide as it can make the top edge of the holster lean out. But for whatever reason, the one for the film is different.
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,535MI6 Agent
    Yeah, the one for the film is very different. As Mr Hazard mentions in 'Famous Gun' Galco actually visited Brozza and fitted the Exec to him. When I see those scenes in TND, the holster is very high up and tight in his armpit. So I wonder if he put on that extra weight after they fitted him. They must have IMO, it's far too high to be comfortable.

    I guess I will have to make myself one like the pic you attached so I have a screen accurate version. -{

    Pretty much the same as the newer version. But I'm paying for this one. No arguments.... :v

    Bit of production clarification regarding an inaccuracy in post no:01....Sean got the P5 first NOT Roger! :D

    You may recall a scene in Octopussy where Bond hand's his shoulder holster to Q "I've mislaid my PPK" where the pistol in the back of the TukTuk is clearly a P5? well this was a retake after early press photos for NSNA had Sean holding the P5 therefore the official Bond had to follow suit. Sean was originally going to use the H&K P9S when an armourer on location handed him the new Walther, the P5 and simply said "try this Sean!" and the rest is history! -{
