I went hiking in mine over the weekend. Wish I had gone half size down

I’m usually wear an EU 43 / UK 9 and that‘s my size in the C&J Islay, Tetbury or the Church’s Ryder III. These shoes have a comfortable and perfect fit (not to tight).
The fit of the DANNER Boots is a little difficult. They are a bit narrow at the ball of the foot and at the toes but at the heel and the ankle they are a bit too loose for my taste. So I went a half size down and I‘m happy with the choice of a UK 8.5.

Here a comparison between the UK 9 Ryder III and a Mountain Light II also size UK 9.

I went through exactly the same process last week. I am UK size 8 normal shoe (US 9) but with boots I usually go size UK 9 add my own insoles and wear thin and thick socks (it's a military thing been doing it for years allows for foot expansion under heavy loads). I went for US size 9.5 (UK 9) and they fit OK with the above sock and insole config. If you want to wear with a single pair of thick socks and the Danner insoles rather than my config I would probably have gone down half a size (US 9/ UK 8.5). I decided it is better to go slightly large than too small as I was heading back to UK. If they are too small unless you are in US you will have to either return them or sell them probably at a loss. If you can try a pair will help as they are slim width fitting as well.

    I hope this helps

just wondering.. Do any of you not use the Danner inserts with their Mountain Light 2s or use another insole..I don't really find their plastic cup all that great

For those in the UK end clothing have just started stocking Danner although not the mountain light 2s... yet! They do have the originals but they have a good returns policy so if anyone needed a size check before ordering from the US it may be useful.

Depends what you wear them for I guess

I have spent a lot of time on my feet carrying weight so always use proper shock absorbing insoles. But that said I did use the Danner insole in the early 90's when everyone was raving about the Arcadias and they were fine (much better than the issue boots anyway at the time - fun times trogging over Brecon). However as I got older and the lower limbs started to feel it I moved to Lowas and a decent orthopedic insoles and have stuck with that combo ever since in any boot (currently use Svartz from Altberg).

I think for general hiking they are probably OK after all it's a work boot (the ML2's) but for more prolonged use or carrying any weight across country may cause an issue - but affect (or not) everyone differently.

    Just my thoughts

Not a Danner query, but I am looking at the Eastland Alpine as an alternative, buying them through the MyUS proxy.

Any US posters able to give me some steer on Eastland sizing. I am normally a UK9 / US10 / Eur 43 though unfortunately going by their size chart that would be a US9.5 however this boot does not offer half sizes. Given I'm UK based I'll probably go with US10 to be safe and employ Bond44's insole/sock procedure if needs be.

Apart from the white stitching they look a very good alternative and much cheaper!
You should post under the frugal Bond thread as well!

I have a pair of these that I bought online through American Eagle. As they didn't stock them in store I couldn't try them on, and my normal size looked like it would be small for me. As they don't do half sizes I had to go a full size up.

They fit as if they were a little more than a half size too big for me, so I'm sure my regular size would have been too small. As I wear thick wool socks with them they don't feel too loose, although I could put an insole in them if I wanted to.

But even without an insole these are amazingly comfortable boots. Very soft and comfortable sole, and the appear to be quite well made. I hope to get a few years out of them!

Thanks, sounds like the US10 should be a good fit, fingers crossed. They have been ordered by the proxy now so hopefully I'll have them in under two weeks. I'll report back when received.
