It's well done, but comparing MI with Bond in this context is immodest at best.

    I heard Tom's foot was " endured" during a stunt in MI6 :D

Would the Mission Impossible series survive minus Tom Cruise? Many thought that the Bond series wouldn't last minus Sean Connery.

Oh absolutely, as long as they keep up the doing-it-for-real thing. Cruise is my least favorite part of these films.

I agree. I don't think most people care so much about Cruise. If you can find a charismatic actor who is also physical (not easy to find these days), everyone will forget about Cruise.

Eh, they introduced Renner in the 4th one to float the idea of handing the franchise off and that was scrapped.

Sure you’re not thinking of the 4th Bourne film? Cruise seems pretty committed to the series...

No, it was discussed for a minute. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jeremy-renner-mission-impossible-tom-49006

That movie has a weird 2nd lead in Renner. He's got a whole narrative arc and everything. It just didn't come to pass.

Strange. Cruise is 56, but Renner is 47. That's only an age difference of nine years.

I think to consider any actor over the age of 30 is very wishful thinking. At the way James Bond films are made an actor now aged 30 would be perhaps 40 or even older when he became James Bond!

The Bond films shouldn’t have survived post-Connery. It only happened because Roger Moore decided to play a different character with the same name and similar tastes. People accepted it, and the precedent was set.

With MI, I’m not sure. The only thing that separates it from a totally generic action franchise is Cruise and his antics. I think it’s more dependent on him than Bond is on an actor precisely because the Hunt character has no identity beyond Cruise.
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,326MI6 Agent
I agree that Ethan Hunt is a "superhero" version of Tom Cruise and no other actor should continue playing Hunt when Cruise leaves.
What they should do is to make another agent the main character of the series. My suggestion is Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). There are problems with this, such as neither the character nor the actress is American and if Ferguson is willing and able to risk life and limb for the series. I don't think we should expect the next lead actor/actress to be as good and willing as Cruise at stunt work, but MI won't survive if most of the stunt work is done digitally or with stunt people.

I enjoy the MI films but I'm really not invested to the point that I would lose any sleep if they never do another...with or without Cruise.
I grew up with the Bond films and am old enough to have seen the original Connery films either upon their initial runs in theaters or in the case of DN and FRWL in their re-release as a double feature. I experienced "Bond Mania"....saw the films, collected the trading cards (oh how I wish I still had them) and the toys. I'm an old crank now who sees the world through eyes that have become cynical and a bit jaded over the years but I will get excitedly filled with anticipation and feel a like a kid again when I walk into the theater in Feb 2020 to see Bond 25.

What about Richard Madden (Robb Stark, Game of Thrones)? Haven’t seen his name thrown out yet. He’s the right age, def seems to have some good acting chops.

I quite like the look of Max Irons, I think he would suit the role, outside of a British actor I really do like Alexander Skarsgard, lived and studied in the UK for a long time and I've enjoyed his work on many projects.
It was either that.....or the priesthood

I think Max Irons has potential, but today he looks too young to play James Bond
Richard Madden is 5ft 9 ¼ (175.9 cm) and that's simply not tall enough to play Bond.

How about Skarsgard? Let's not forget that the next bonds first film is not likely for at least 4 years, which may rule out many of the so called favourites.
Max Irons is 33 at the moment, he'd be pushing 40 for Bond 26

No Swede should play Bond. His father played the Swedish version of 007, that should be enough for Alexander.

My statement about Skarsgård does not come from a hatred of Swedes (that comes into play in othere situations :)) ), I simply think think Bond should be played by somene British or possibly from Australia or NZ.

I'm of course aware that Daniel Craig i barely taller than Madden. But In my opinion Craig is a good Bond in spite of his relatively short height, it's a negative and not a possitive. He had other strengths that weighed up for it. I'm not sure the same can be said of Madden. Tall potential Bond girls was never a problem before Craig, simply because the Bond actors were 6' 2''.

People accepted Craig so the height issue is not important. You can notice Craig's short-ish stature in the Venice scenes from CR and the tube scenes in Skyfall. If Richard Madden did a decent screentest and Barbara Broccoli liked him he'd have a chance. I don't see his height being a big issue for Babs although if he did win the role I'm sure

I think Daniel had so many exceptional qualities that it did not strike people as a big deal (no pun intended). I bristle a bit at heightism, as I do not think it matters a jot in the real world, and has no bearing whatsoever on masculinity. Bond however is a fictional character and something of an archetype, with certain characteristics that are a large part of his character. As a consequence , he does literally stand out.
He never quite blends in. When in Britain he appears somewhat 'foreign'. In the West tall now is way over 6ft. I'm just under 6ft 4 and when in Australia or the US amongst young people in dwarfed (I always like it as height has been a bit of a curse)

I have no desire to reopen 'height war's and only posted as I have no wish to cause offence by heightism. Daniel has always been miscast in my view to some extent and height is a part of that. He is however so good, with so many great qualities that he almost makes me forget. I'd like him to broaden out and exhibit a bit more sophistication which I know he can do but keep the tough edge. Bond exists in the intersection of these contrasting facets. That's what makes him special and is more important than his height.

Craig's been Bond for over a decade now and his height, or lack thereof, is apparently still an issue to many for some silly reason. Bond has almost always personified the "tall, dark and handsome" archetype though so I suppose I can understand those who yearn for an actor who more fits that mold. That said EON will likely go that route next instead of chasing another Craig clone anyway.

If height is a issue then god help these critics if the next Bond is Black (Elba) or built like a brick shitehouse / bodybuilder (Henry) :D

The fact that Craig is accepted as Bond even though he isn't tall does not prove that height isn't an issue. Zephod99 writes that Craig has so many exceptional qualities that height isn't an issue. I agree - this means his height isn't an issue anymore. Back in 2006 it was an issue, and if his successor isn't tall either it will become an issue again. Height shouldn't be a make or brake issue when casting Bond (unless the actor is very short or extremely tall), but it is an issue.

Have actors or actresses been discarded from working in Craig's Bond movies because they're too tall compared to him? We don't know. Perhaps a beautiful and tallented actress has has lost a role because Craig isn't as tall as the othere Bond actors. We can't know.
We know that several times when actresses have been suggested on this forum someone has posted that it won't work because she's too tall. I think it would work for one film, but it would restrict what angles they use, who can stand next to each other in the same shot etc. Not something a director wants to deal with in many movies. But we can take it for granted this wasn't an issue with the previous Bonds.

On a related note Tom Cruise was more or less just fired from the Jack Reacher films because as dedicated as he was he didn't have the imposing physical stature that Reacher is written as having. Granted Reacher is an extreme case but its a recent example of someone's height deviation from the established source being an issue. It is irrelevant to Craig now since he's been Bond for so long and absolutely owns the role but I do remember thinking that seeing Bond as the shortest guy on screen throughout SF is a bit jarring.

I for one would have no problem with that except he's too old. So ageism rather than racism would be the barrier.
Also Cavill could trim the bulk if he wanted to but he'd still be made of wood.
