Having blued firearms professionally for quite a few years I would suggest leaving your PPK alone!

The factory legend on the slide is etched and just walking the part near a buffing wheel will seriously degrade it. Properly refinishing a pistol is very time consuming and even here in the USA only about one out of a thousand "gunsmiths" can do a nice firearm justice. Cold blue products use acid to color the metal and can cause rusting if you're not careful. They also eat away at the original bluing. A nice PPK with honest wear can be wrecked by trying to spiff it up (don't ask how I know this).

Besides, take a look at the pistols used in the films (when they were real and not cast replicas) you will find them pretty well worn. Too bad a nice pistol like that PPK had to be deactivated ... don't add insult to injury. In the end it's your pistol Bond44.

Thanks for the feedback and I do see your point. It's not something I will be rushing into. I think if I fit Black hand grips and finger extension that will tone the colour down naturally (the current colour contrast may be what is bugging me). So I will work on that and see how it looks first then decide if I take further action.

As you say the real weapons used in the film are far from perfect (must be my OCD kicking in)

Great insight though thanks guys

Cheers :007)

To be fair my ppk was in a pretty similar condition at one time, but after a good strip down and clean and a touch up it looks like this now
20170407_190923.jpg

20170407_191021.jpg

DSC_0012.jpg

And this is the finish I got on the ppk/s with cold blueing using Philips on the slide

DSC_0013.jpg
Some sound advice given, but I've found it is possible to touch up a gun to an OK standard. Though some may look at my pictures and disagree :))
Chris

Looks good I will take a look - after all this PPK is now in retirement and will be little more then a desk prop so a touch up may be all it needs rather than an overhaul

Cheers :007)

Just an FYI, if you do the bluing touch up yourself and decide you don't like it and would prefer a professional rebluing, the kit I used comes with a bluing removal solvent.

https://www.birchwoodcasey.com/Refinishing/Metal-Finishing/Perma-Blue®-Gun-Blue-Kit.aspx

I did ultimately send mine out to be reblued professionally, but mine was in very rough shape. As stated, the sanding and buffing will effect the sharpness of the engravings on the slide, but I did that part myself.

Yeah, the opening bid on that one is a bit ambitious for not being NIB and not completely rollmarked.

Looks great as is IMO.

I don't think any of the screen-used PPKs were in mint condition, which is the absolute reality regarding most agency-issued duty pistols.

This is a long shot does anyone have a black finger extension for a PPK 7.65mm magazine?
Or magazine complete with black finger extension? Shopped around in UK and they seem in short supply.

D and b have a full mag with extension for £35, but it's in. 380 guise. Not sure if it would fit a 7.65 mag or not? Maybe worth an ask

Interesting that never came up on my eBay search. All the ones I found are US based companies that do not post to U.K for some reason hence why I was look on home shores first.

A question: is the mag spur redundant on a PPK/S? The PP frame is large enough, already. Isn't that overkill?
a reasonable rate of return

Possibly on the PPK/S but definately not on the PPK. I thought it redundant there but unless you have hands like Action Man most will appreciate it or some of your fingers feel at a loose end.

I have mixed feelings about the spur, I found practically it compromised the ppk's almost perfect concealability in a iwb. It's fine in a shoulder rig. But in a hot climate shoulder rigs don't work. I had no problems using the ppk without the spur. With my fingers finding a comfortable position resting on the lanyard keep. Never suffered slide bite either. But horses for courses. It looks better with a spur though.

Looking good, how did you find the Philips? I always give it a coat of gun oil after and bring the parts up to a warm temperature -{

Took a bit of experimentation and not sure I got it right and not as dark as I was expecting but it's removed the wear marks and made it a little cleaner whilst keeping the ingrained imperfections.

How do you normally used Phillips instructions were a tad basic.

I am happy and it looks good with the suppressor.

To be honest, my ppk's have been in relatively good order, suffering only holster wear to the blueing and not pitting etc, my own "service" pistol I just touched up the worn areas. But the technique was the same ( I'm a little OCD with things like this) I remove the slide and degrease and clean it then place it in the oven at a 50 degrees for 10 minutes or so then apply the Philips. I then leave it for a couple of hours and then use a soft cloth to lightly buff up, then add some gun oil. I wouldn't holster again for a couple of days but add another coat of gun oil before doing so.

Bought a new PPK mag off Brownwells but it is shipping from USA will be here in a few weeks.
However I think it is going to have a more modern finger extension that on older models.
Still keeping my eyes open for an older version patience is my friend so I will keep looking.
Plus no matter how I try cannot get the brown extension to budge so probably need complete .32 mag in the end.

Chris - thanks for heads up I am guessing the hotter it is the darker the colour. I will give that a try when I get some time.

Question for experts. I've been reading about the Zella controversy regarding LTK and noticed the rear sight is mentioned alot as evidence it can't be a Zella factory PPK since they are fixed to the rear of the slide and a screen shot of the PPK in Bond's holster shows otherwise.
601px-_Ltk-ppk4.jpg

While browsing an auction site, I found what's labeled as a 1945 Dural framed PPK marked Zella, but with adjustable sights

Was this normal for dural frames, or possibly something custom?
