What's your favourite Bond with Bond girl on water ending?

Revolver66Revolver66 Melbourne, AustraliaPosts: 470MI6 Agent
The classic Bond film ending. 007 somewhere on (or in) water locked in romantic embrace with the Bond girl. If my memory serves me right the films that end with this type of scene are:

Dr. No
From Russia With Love
Thunderball
You Only Live Twice
Diamonds Are Forever
The Man With The Golden Gun
The Spy Who Loved Me
For Your Eyes Only
Octopussy
Tomorrow Never Dies

There is also:

A View To A kill - Bond in a shower with Bond girl

Licence to Kill - Bond in a pool with Bond girl

Which ones your favourite?

Mine has to be Thunderball -{

Licence To Kill signified the end of the 80s and Timothy Dalton's Bond, so it has to be my favourite. I'm not sure if Diamonds Are Forever counts as they are "on" water but not in it.
    a reasonable rate of return

I love the ending to Diamonds Are Forever. Very humorous, and I like that the Connery Era ends with him going on a long cruise with Tiffany Case, a woman that is a perfect match for his version of Bond.

Funny, I knew a few of the movies ended that way, but I never paid attention of it being done so, so many times. Was it consciously done?

I would say yes. It's too many films to be a coincidence

I'd love to see a Bond movie end with a painfully bored Bond dictating his report to his secretary back in headquarters :))

    LICENCE TO KILL.
It is actually the most romantic of all the water endings. It's cute, and it perfectly glides into the song "If You Asked Me To."

    THUNDERBALL
Have to mention this one just because of the incredibly revealing shot of Ms. Auger's...uhh, well, slow down your DVD and you'll see. Still can't believe this got by the censors all those years ago.

Just watched the scene - for strict scientific reasons.
I think that mostly your phantasy is playing you tricks.

That aside, it's remarkable that the bathing suit of the stunt swimmer has 1 strap while Domino's suit has 2.

    Wait a minute...you didn't see anything?!?

Not my imagination. All Bond fans know there are two versions of THUNDERBALL out there. Maybe you have the censored version. Believe me, in my version Ms. Auger shows a bit more cheek than usual.

    Give it another go.

From Russia With Love and Licence To Kill for me.

FRWL is a strong film with everything that you just love in Bond, and after a climactic ending... Bond paddling away with Tania in Venice is intriguing.

LTK is pretty self explanatory. Pam and Bond in the pool, the great score in the background, the end of the 80's, John Glen's Bond films and Timothy Dalton and the romantic scene overall.

1.) Licence to Kill - As said before, signifies the end of the 80s with a great balad by Patti LaBelle. If You Ask Me To is a tremendous song and has the ability to make me tear up (sign me up for the Dalton Misty-Eyed Fan Club :D). Dalton's two films have just tremendous romantic endings that just hit the nail on the head. Q shaking his head in disapproval while downing his martini is just perfect!

2.) Thunderball - Awesome stunt to end an epic film. So Bondian. Enough said!

3.) The Spy Who Loved Me - Good tension between XXX and Bond before the bubbly pops. It does diminish the death of her former boyfriend some, but it's all forgotten by 'Keeping the British end up sir!". Classic.

4.) Diamonds Are Forever - I like the embrace of Bond and Tiffany, signifying the end of the Connery era. Looking up to the stars as Bassey brilliant DAF title track plays. Love the dinner with Wint and Kidd though I won't count that as part of the ending, because I am only considering the final moments after the action is done with all these.

5.) The Man With The Golden Gun - Goodnight sir! Slow version of Lulu's title song really nails it. No need to fear... James Bond is herrrreeeeee.

6.) From Russia With Love - Love the lyrical version of FRWL, and wrapping up the hotel suite film angle. The rear projection is the only thing that holds this one back as it noticably detracts from the ambiance.

7.) For Your Eyes Only - The Margaret Thatcher bit actually makes me laugh, but seems misplaced in this film. I like Max too.

8.) A View to a Kill - If it were a different Rog film it would rank lower; however, with the context of this being Rog's last Bond, it does encapsulate his Bond's lover style in a good send off. Snooper is perhaps the least realistic (or helpful) gadget of the series, and it's only really in the film for this purpose.

9.) Dr. No - Points for being the original, but the music shows signs of still being in the 50s here. I don't get why they ask for a tow in the first place if he's going to let the line go two seconds later!

10.) Octopussy - Pure Rog cheese and I love it, but not sure why Bond has injuries and Octopussy doesn't. They both had to jump out of the plane. A weaker send off, but wraps up nicely with the opening sax notes of All Time High.

11.) You Only Live Twice - They tried to do a similar ending to TB, but much weaker payoff. Kissy is one of my least favorite Bond girls, which is ashame because I loved Aki. Would have been much better if she made it to the end.

12.) Tomorrow Never Dies - Standard fanfare here. I like Pierce and Michelle Yeoh, but the ending is pretty average. Good David Arnold track to accompany it though.

Great write up! -{ I largely agree with your ranking as well. I would Put You Only Live Twice and probably Dr. No higher. I know that YOLT is a rehash of Thunderball but I still think it's great. Particularly how the dingy gets raised up by the sub.

I do enjoy YOLT's finish, though I think it doesn't work as well for me largely because Kissy is a weaker character that I don't connect with as much and is not someone I see Bond having a lasting relationship with. I imagine as soon as they get back to land Bond would be like "Alright Kissy, it's been real but I'm joining Tiger for some more sake on his bad ass train".

By the 1970s, Bond could afford a berth in a proper boat, he didn't need to settle for a liferaft anymore.
Sort of like when I decided I was never going to settle for a youth hostel, let alone a farmers field again, when travelling.
Moore especially did it in style. Makes sense Scaramanga's boat came equipped with waterbed, champagne and hifi. But Stromberg's escape capsule? These bigshot corporate types sure are entitled. Imagine being one of his customers, paying his overpriced shipping fees and then finding out all that money went to a champagne stocked escape capsule!

Having forgotten the ending of Goldfinger, is it really not in a liferaft? Fleming's book ended in a boat, that's why Pussy is wearing "a grey fisherman's jersey that was decent by half an inch".

Wuddabout SPECTRE? ends on a bridge. That's the closest Craig got, and the only time he gets the girl, though he forgets to make the obligatory witty nudgenudgewinkwink remark.
oh yeh, I guess Casino Royale would count, if only there hadn't been problems with Vesper and the bank. Even then he shared his last scene with her in the water. hmm...

EDIT: I hope one day they film the end of Diamonds... properly, Fleming wrote a much better Bond-on-the-water scene than what the filmmakers filmed

I know its not the end of a film, but the end of The Living Daylights pre-title sequence has Bond on a boat with some lovely bikini wearing women. I would assume Bond did what Bond does best.
Some people would complain even if you hang them with a new rope
