Philosophical question about your collection....

Bond44Bond44 Vauxhall CrossPosts: 1,581MI6 Agent
OK suffice to say over the years I have acquired many clothing and accessory items from Bond. Nowhere near as much as Mantis but a modest small (and seemingly ever growing) collection. I buy to use and enjoy mainly not to sit and admire. So some items will wear out eventually, some may never be worn and the watches will go to my rug rats.

My take is live for today for tomorrow may never come, Bond is something I enjoy, I am fortunate enough to have funds now and again to make the odd purchase or two (well savings do sod all in the bank these days I would rather enjoy it). I guess I could call DC's Bond the Bond of 'my' era even though my span covers all of them, I have identified with him the most. But where will it all end up? Will I be a 70 year old pensioner dressing like DC era Bond? Who knows.... but I doubt I will feel as aligned with the next bond whomever that will be - that will be for the next generation of 30 somethings whatever they are called these day.

Have you ever thought where your collection will go friends, family, charity, auction or local boot sale?

We all seem to share that live for the moment attitude so I was just curious

Cheers :007)

P.S Reality is rug rats will probably inherit much of it in dusty boxes, where they see it as vintage Bond an investment they can cash in a bit like a savings plan for them (well that's my justification to the Long Haired General anyway) :D

Well I have told my wife what everything is worth, so I hope she enjoys the money she will make.

But seeing how I am 27, I don't think I will be dropping it anytime soon.

" yes orlebar brown was a good make back then"
" God dad loved a shawl collar cardigan didn't he? RAG AND BONE??!! This can go in the charity bag "
" what are we doing with these old watches, guns, sunglasses and pin badges "?

Then the penny drops for mrscoop " TOM FORD!!!!??? Ferking barstard told me he was our plumber! "

Thank you Bond44 for starting this thread.
I have the exact same questions in mind.
How long will I continue to accumulate bond related items?
My closets are full...And i always wear the same clothes...my wife is tired of running to the post-office to collect my parcels..
And i always get the same comment "what!!! another pair of shoes"?
I just cannot stop buying bond items...it is a disease... Is there a psychiatrist on this forum???

    Oh how I laughed! :D
But seriously made a few purchases this week I may not mention I one hit. On the TF point - luckily for me I have so many Shawl Neck cardigans she hasn't noticed yet!
Also I might not mention the watch I just hacked this week for my 8500 project! (trust me I have not gone mad sweetheart I know what I am doing - she would have me committed)

What is it they say ignorance is bliss and she cannot kill me when I am gone! It's all for the kids retirement fund honest!

My view on buying this "stuff" is that its OUR hobby, and what is cooler still is that we get to use our hobby for all occasions.

    Going out with friends, dinner party, weddings, to the beach, to the gym. There is something for all occasions. What other hobby can say that? Plus we look better than everyone else in the room -{

The only down side is that when I am at a dinner party I am on edge when people are eating around me, god forbid they spill something on me. Next thing you know.....

Most conversations with my wife when a parcel arrives start with 'What Bond film?' but they are not all Bond related - honest! :D
Kids normally shoot me a look when we are watching the odd film or two that says you got that one right?

Personally life's too short and if you can do it and it makes you happy what's the harm? My caveat is - should the worst happen it would have to go. So enjoy while you can, you never know what is around the corner.

The harm is of course the wallet...This hobby is very costly...
And I would add that there is only a few people who know how rare and precious some items are...

Wow! What a great thread, and some great and hilarious responses. I will likely keep collecting until I drop and will probably wear every Bond outfit that is introduced in the future via future Bonds. But, hey, who knows. All I know is I'm gonna keep doing it as long as it feels right and continues to bring me happiness.

Great points about life being short. As many know, I recently had a cancer scare and found myself gravitating towards Bond collecting more than ever. I love this stuff. But, more importantly, get out the tissues guys, I love you guys. For me, the best part of all of this is the friendships I make here and sharing in the experience with you guys. Honestly, probably wouldn't be in as deep if it wasn't for this community.

I mean, really, does it get any better than watching Welshboy get his Armani jacket after so many years? What about the TF Harrington project, amazing! Let's not forget the watch experts on here and, of course the Higgins and Asp banter. I get excited when one of our new members turns out to come up something like Iconic Alternatives and blows it out of the water. And, how many times have you watched David Z's videos? I mean, it's his fault I'm in this hobby. I get excited when Bond44 shares a new outfit or new find. I love trying to convince Chriscoop to wear the old styles and always enjoy reading his alternatives and watch posts, not to mention the pin he made which sits on my desk.

I know many of us will never meet and people will come and go and even pass eventually, but man we've got something here guys. I wear these clothes because of people. I like to impress people, I like to look dressed up for people. I like the compliments, and most of all, I like sharing with you guys. Sure, I've got my own selfish reasons and personal connection, but even those stem from people (namely my father).

    I get so excited when I get something new and can't wait to share it. I get excited when I see everyone else's stuff too. I know I missed a bunch of people in the explanation above, but I have enjoyed my experience with everyone here, even if i don't always see eye to eye with everyone. Who cares. That's the fun of it. It's just great to know there are other people out there who have the same interest. I never really had a group of friends growing up and I was the guy that always had a hard time making guy friends, so this forum and you guys mean a lot to me. I know, too mushy. :)) but, hey man, Fu$& it! Ya only live twice, and I'm determined to make the second one count. So, for as long as you guys are in, I'm in -{

Fantastic introspection here. Better than group therapy!

My only regret with the hobby is that it's this taken this long in life to find DC's fashion inspiration. I mean, until what age can even the most physically fit guy get away with donning form-fitting clothing? ;)

I don't collect per se. I just look for high quality lookalikes that can be worn without concern for collector value. I occasionally splurge for a genuine article that's within my reach or can't be well-replicated. So my Bond-inspired wardrobe essentially has no real or perceived value to pass along.

Now my gun collection (to include 007 brands of course) is a whole different story. :D
    I edit, therefore I am.

I think the massive interest around Craig's clothes on screen and off is a by product of him being Bond at the height of the internet and our celebrity obsessed culture. And I don't see how the next Bond will be any different, whoever it is will probably create a new generation of Bond clothing collectors Like Craig has. Because what man doesn't want to dress like Bond or atleast wear the same products? So Its only a positive thing in my mind to have a style that's influenced by him/Bond in general. I say influenced because the way I see it you have to be your own man, your tombstone probably wont say "Daniel Wroughton Craig". As for my collection once I'm gone? Have no idea honestly, I'm only 27 so haven't really thought about it but ideally I would like some pieces to live on and be enjoyed beyond me whether they're still in fashion or not.

Its an odd hobby we have, but I never feel too much guilt, some people pay fortunes for their hobbies, whether it's shooting, off road driving, scuba diving, golf etc, some even spend a small fortune partying every weekend, I'd rather spend my money on the things we all here enjoy. Can you have too many watches, sunglasses, chukka boots?
I'm lucky with Mrs coop too, she appreciates nice clothing and accessories, she spends enough herself her wardrobe being mostly made up of Ted Baker and all saints, she also wears tf sunglasses and fragrance. It doesn't bother her my inspiration is Bond and dc, or that I spend time here with like minded people some of whom I share spooky parallels with. Here's to us at ajb {[]

James Brosnan, you have captured the core of what brings us back day after day and fuels our passion...as much as we might think it's the textile, or prop, or discovery what it truly is, is the people. Friends, acquaintances, frenemies...it doesn't matter...we are all intertwined through this hobby. A hobby, that many of you have pointed out, is a community effort sometimes online and sometimes in person. My motivation in doing the vlogs from the beginning and my zeal for doing them today have not changed---they are a way for me to connect and share moments with a community that have become a part of my life.
Back to the original question, and being 49, with a decent sized collection I have cataloged EVERY items and potential worth (had to for insurance purposes) but I have also gone the added distance in assigning two of my Bond friends to help my family sell my collection successfully in the event of my demise (cue depressing wonk wonk noise)...I have a few items I want donated to museums, and then a few more to be given to family and friends. So, I am all set if you want to drop that piano on me....

DZ two questions have come as I look at you collection - when does a bunch Bond stuff switch from being that to needing insurance for the insurance purposes? (I am guessing value dictates)
And who the hell does the dusting in your place :D

Interesting about museum donatings as well what would you send were out of interest!

I also thought it a shame we will never all meet, maybe in small pockets locally but never globally (probably not facilitated by anything official like comiccon etc)

That is facinating about getting insurance on your stuff. I only have a few of the correct jackets, and I've already thought about how upsetting it would be if I was robbed or the place burned or something. I'm thinking insurance wouldn't be a bad idea for most of us, as our collections amount to tens of thousands with watches and jackets, etc. I do believe that David has some screen used pieces, possibly those are what he is referring to for museum donations.

I am quite young yet (35), so I expect to amass a decent sized collection over my lifetime. I'm opting my boy can start using some of it as he gets older, if they fit him, I'm a rather small dude and take XS in everything. But, knowing my luck, my boy will be as averse to a classic Barbour jacket as Chris is to powder blue pants and a lemon colored shirt :)). I like the idea of cateloging everything. I'll have to start that as my collection grows.

I believe that David has had some luck with meeting up globally when he goes to the movie primeres and whatnot. I know if I'm ever in the area, I'll drop off some appropriate summer attire with you Chris, to help step up your summer wardrobe game, and possibly you could give me a few pointers about dressing for the cold. :007) I would also be willing to visit anyone else willing to endure the experience of my company for as long as they can bear.

The insured pieces are the screen used ones, for the most part, but because my collection is housed in one area we had to also quantify the collection as a whole.
