Casino Royale: The Briefcase

Towards the end of CR, Vesper puts all of the money in the beautiful Samsonite briefcase and gives it to the man with the straw hat.
When the house started sinking, the guy's case fell into the Venitian water. Trouble is, Mr Whyte (that's how I'll type his name, deal with it, pun intended) managed to get the case. Unless he dove into the water or has some ability to turn back time, how did it end up in his hands?

Jesper Christensen plays Mr. White in CR. You probably confuse him with Willard Whyte in DAF.
I haven't seen CR in a while, so I can't help you with your question. Sorry.

This is how it happened. Blofeld was always there. He and White watched it all go down. They saw the briefcase floating. The two argued over who'd get it. White can't swim so that wasn't happening. Then Blofeld donned a wet suit underneatg his black, inconspicuous suit. He then swam for the money. He grabbed it and swam back to the surface. White took it from his hands, kicked him in the face, stared one last time at Bond and Vesper, and walked away. This began the rot in their relationship.

That's probably how John Logan thought of it. :))

No, I know it is Mr White but I prefer Mr Whyte because aesthetics.

    Remington, LOL
It would be a great idea for a parody though :))

I'm not sure what the problem is. The house sinks, and when Bond and Vesper bob up to the surface, water is clearly spewing out of the skylight. It's not hard to imagine the briefcase, too, bobs to the surface, and while Bond is preoccupied, White just reaches over and plucks it out of the water. Do we literally need to see White do this to draw the logical conclusion?

I agree. I've seen CR many times and remembering it, I've always thought there was a shot of White grabbing the briefcase out of the water...reading this thread now has made me realise that that's actually not the case and it's just my memory filling in the blanks. I think that was the intention of the filmmakers, that viewers would make that logical conclusion as well.

Clip from after the briefcase went into the water.

And theres the water flooding out of the roof and skylight that Gassy Man spoke about.

Not hard to assume that the buoyant case came out at some point with all that water surging out from the house.

Very interesting. I agree that there shouldn't of been a shot of Whyte grabbing the case but it isn't hard for one to imagine that the case could've been trapped under the rubble or plainly fallen to the bottom of the sea. Yet with all the water being pushed out, it could've been pushed out to the surface.
That makes sense and I concur with that resolution.

There is a clear section in the film where it shows how bouyant it is. Something that buoyant and small would have been hard to trap by debris, even falling directly on it. It would also have been kept in the centre of the building with all of the water spewing in from the windows each side. It certainly wouldn't have sunk and it's more than plausible that it would have been one of the first things at the surface when the water level reached the skylight.
