M's Apartment; Casino Royale vs Skyfall

If you are like me, when you first watched Casino Royale and you got to the part where Bond breaks into her apartment, you were amazed by the design and the furniture of M's apartment.
From designer chairs, to the bookcases and paintings on her walls, it was all brilliantly chosen and added a touch of class to the place.
In Skyfall, when Bond breaks into her second (and much less interesting) apartment, I wasn't amazed.
Like (almost) everything in the movie, it had an old-timey feel to it and I didn't like it as much.
Even if her apartment was compromised, couldn't she get a similar apartment to the first one?
What do you think?
a reasonable rate of return

I am always amazed, especially in this era, how M's surroundings changed from film to film.
Be it her office or her flat.

Not that inconsistency would be something new to the franchise.

    Especially her office in QoS.
It's like we were in a different dimension.

I much prefered the CR Apartment, the furnishings (Barcelona chair) etc. I thought it was very stylish but somehow at odds with her character. The more conservative (dull ) Skyfall one seemed to be more appropriate. I liked the element of surprise in CR though as I remember thinking 'Oh that's not how I imagined it' it somehow added depth/complexity to her.

she probably changed the design aesthetic for security purposes
QUANTUM were looking for an apartment with stylish designer furniture
so she tricked them by going oldschool and they wasted their time searching all the wrong apartments

I think she moved after her husband died, unwilling to stay on in the house they had shared because it brought back too many memories.

Interesting how Bond didn't bump into her husband when he first broke into her apartment.

I much prefer her apartment in CR. Martin Campbell said he chose it because the viewers wouldn't expect her to live in a place like that. It was something different. Great view too.

The apartment in SF belonged to John Barry. If I'm correct the only reason Mendes had her use it was to honor Barry.

Question. I don't really remember. What we saw of M's apartment, did what we see of it go with CR or was it totally different like her office?

Just a convenient coincidence of the kind Bond is used to. :)

What we saw...when? In QoS? Because in that case we never did see her full apt, just her beautiful bathroom if I remember correctly.

Yeah I think her SF apartment seemed the most appropriate for the character. It's normalcy helped ground the film's London atmosphere after QOS's Star Trek environment.

I wonder how the new M (Mallory) lives?
His office is very traditionally, so one expect his house is too. Both the way he talks and dressed (suspenders etc.) suggests a traditionallist.

Bring back Quarterdeck (although with Fiennes' M having a military rather than naval background), it might have to be called something else.

The original M was an admiral with navy paintings on the walls. I suspect Dame Judi's background was in administration and akademics, so she had modern sensebilities. Mallory probably went to public school, then the army and the SAS. Like I said he seems traditional and old-fashioned. I think he would have an old house full of objects and art from all over the world from his army days
