Are you really saying people are too educated to be afraid of poisonous spiders and snakes? ?:)
I’m saying that thanks to Nat Geo and Discovery channels, people are too educated in the natural world to find a garden filled with cinematically interesting or that threatening. It’s just a bit boring and wouldn’t work well on screen or with modern audiences. The world is a much smaller place now and people visit dangerous areas of it for fun and holidays.
And there aren’t any poisonous spiders and only one species of poisonous snake. Ironically it’s found in Japan, but for all the rest, they’re fine to eat

I wasn't aware there's a difference between venemous and poisonous. I suspect most of us get my point regardless. My point is that very many people find animals and plants that use poison scary and a good director can make a Garden of Death scene really cinematic.
I think there's another angle we are forgetting about which might prevent the Bond producers from filming a Garden of Death sequence. Remember in 2018 there was that scandal because popular youtuber Logan Paul visited a Suicide Forest in Japan and filmed a dead body? I think EON would be conscious of that and would want to avoid any Garden of Death concepts.
“The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning. "
-Casino Royale, Ian Fleming
A "garden of death" could be used to grow plants that could be turned into nerve gas, like Drax's orchids. The idea of the garden of death could be used in a different way than Fleming imagined it.
I don't picture it like a 'nice' garden with a neat lawn (which emtiem said), it's more like a forest/jungle!
It is macabre and creepy and awesome. This is not a frigging allotment! It's a deadly garden.
I also disagree with those saying the world know too much about the world to appreciate this. Yeah, maybe some. But just about anything that gets filmed these days gets heaps of haters anyway, so why not try something different?
I'm all for it. And I'm glad many others are for it too. Those that aren't for it seem to be giving really bizarre reasons ?:)
Apart from the suicide controversy reason - yes that's a good point.
I love bond films and all, but sometimes something different is welcome, and I would love the garden of death in the same macabre vein as the Voodoo stuff in LALD.
Like, people are mentioning lack of action? ?:) This is not a car chase! It is not that kind of scene. It is more akin to stealth/horror with maybe a few fights thrown in. Nothing wrong with that.
You could easily make the garden of death cinematic. A night time scene of Bond in the garden at a remote mansion where he is evading henchmen and witnessing people commit suicide or be killed would be quite impactful. It would' t work as the focal point of the film but it would definitely make for a memorable sequence.
Given that there are places today where people go to commit suicide, this concept has not aged poorly at all and would be quite poignant as well as edgy. I don't think they are going to use it for this film. But it could most definitely work.
The word “garden” sounds a bit dull and English tea partyish to me.
They would have to call it “Jungle of Death” or “Jungle of Doom” to ramp it all up for the younger gen. Chuck some dinosaurs in there and maybe The Rock and King Kong
According to Collider, Ben Whishaw says, "It’s [NTTD] Daniel’s last film as James Bond, so I think what they can look forward to is a kind of summing up, I guess, of all of the previous Bond films that Daniel’s done. There are strands from all of the films in it, kind of reaching a conclusion." [Emphasis added] https://twitter.com/Collider/status/1221905396241137666?s=20
Put me in the camp that has no interest in seeing the Garden if Death. It’s kind of like Moonraker for me. I love the book, one of my favorites, but I fully understand why they went in a different direction when adapting it for film. I feel the same way about YOLT. That’s not to say either of those films are among my favorites (they are not), but it just comes down to the different mediums. Some of the stories translate better than others. This has become even more pronounced over time. While a Casino Royale or a FRWL remains relatively timeless, many of the others are very much of their day. Which is fine. New ideas are good, especially for well worn franchises like Bond.
The word “garden” sounds a bit dull and English tea partyish to me.
Context is everything though, the addition of the words "of death" make this much, much darker than say an English country garden or the secret garden lol.
I personally don't have that feeling with the word garden. It's not like it's called the patio of death.
IMO the only thing that I can kind of agree with is the risk of controversy regarding suicide. However, if done right, they could make something really poignant. Imagine a scene where bond is viewing a morgue of some of the people that have passed, and he sees somebody's body there that he once knew. And that he was totally unaware of how unhappy this person was.
On another note, a climactic scene in the garden of death could feel a lot like Skyfall lodge's climax, which I for one really loved.
And on another note, I don't think the garden of death is dated. As mentioned above, there really are suicide forests out there. And if you still think it's dated, then well, a period piece would solve that.
Not to crap on FRWL or anything, but I find it so totally dated lol. I mean, an old lecktor machine, tatiana pretending to "fall in love" with bond, and bond slapping her arse.

I watched it recently and did wonder: why does he steal the machine so blatantly? Surely they’ll just change the codes if they know one’s been stolen? A bit of a pain but hardly the end of their plans.

As mentioned above, there is really a forrest near Mount Fuji in Japan where many go to kill themselves. There's at least one famous poem where the place is called the perfect place for suicide, there are signs urging people not to kill themselves and the forrest is searced every year for dead bodies. I'm no expert on Japan, but the impression is that suicide is still romantcized in Japanese culture and is still seen as a honourable way to avoid shame. In other words it seems like the idea of the Garden of Death isn't outdated.

I was referring to the novel, and the story in general. Of course all of the books are dated in some respects, but that’s one of the ones that, like CR, could be updated and still work.

Doesn’t it really depend on the Cold War, that one? Not only trying to get the other side’s coding device but also Bond trying to escape from behind the iron curtain in the last half or so. I guess you could set it in North Korea or something but even then it’s not quite the same.
Is that just official trailers or would that also rule out any possible Bond related tie-in ads from Heineken/Nokia/Bollinger etc?
The website is talking about trailers, not tie in advertising. I would imagine that it is perfectly possible that tie-in ads could be broadcast. Or MI6-hq.com is wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.

I'm not seeing anything for Heineken, Nokia, Bollinger, etc listed among the Super Bowl commercials . Apparently there are less movie trailers this year also. The NTTD publicity machine seems to be in full swing now with trailers playing in theaters regularly, plenty of magazine cover stories, and TV appearances and promotions. Maybe it was determined that 5.6 million for a 30 second spot could be used better elsewhere.

I’d pay to be in there with a longbow and a couple of arrows.

Dalton - the weak and weepy Bond!
Occupational hazard. Like you and traffic wardens often get punched on the nose just for being.
The clue to the joke is in the last four words there

Nice that she's getting some advert opportunities from being in a Bond film. Of course the Daily Mail can't resist putting their tab stink
on it. )
