I think this story is wrong and Asp9mm is right and it will be Mendes again. Nolan rumours aside, we've gone through Denis Villeneuve, David Mackenzie, Yann Demange, and Edgar Wright and Susanne Bier, as rumoured, and partly confirmed, shortlisted directors in the last 2 years.
For a movie that has had Purvis and Wade working on the script for about a year (media reports they were asked popped up in March 2017) there can't be any worries about the quality of the script at this point. I blame John Logan entirely for Spectre's flaws, I think the scripting process for Bond24 was a fiasco. Blofeld as an African warlord!?
Was there always a story outline for a two-parter with Bond 24 and 25? And the characters of Madeleine, Mrs Sciarra and Hinx, were always going to have a 2 movie arc? And yes Waltz is lying his ass off, again. Is that why we didn't see Hinx die, why Ms Sciarra escapes with Felix Leiter, why Blofeld was captured and why Bond leaves with Madeleine at the end, apparently quitting MI6?
I think we're looking at a June Mendes announcement - only 13.5 weeks to go. They have to announce then because if you look back at cast rumours, they pop up in the summer, as Seydoux did in August 2014, when the casting auditions begin. And when they announce Mendes everyone will know Bond25 is a sequel to Spectre.
BTW the Variety story has been updated to say MGM does distribution, so that's US distribution only. International distribution is still a mystery. I think with the recent date moves of movies, Sony has probably won again as potentially competing studios have now put strong movies on and around the 9 November slot.
I'd be okay with Boyle. Directors like Boyle can make a great film, but they can't make a great action film. That was the problem that Mendes and Forster had: genuinely exciting and special action sequences. But considering how Craig is looking these days, and how tired he was after Spectre, maybe there won't be a ton of action in the next Bond film. And that's perfectly alright with me. If we can go back to the approach of the first three films where a 60-year-old Cary Grant could have handled Connery's role, we'll be alright. Craig won't be able to take on Tom Cruise in the stunts department, and I don't think they should even try.
I completely agree. If they let someone like Boyle make the type of film he is good at making, it could really work. What won’t work is a stunt double doing poorly conceived action scenes.
Agreed, and I'd like to add that digitally attaching Daniel Craig's head onto a stunt double makes it even worse.

Few things could torpedo my excitement more then if Sam Mendes directed again. Especially if Christoph Waltz returned.

I don't think Mendes will be back....but you never know. With regards to Danny Boyle, I find that a bit surprising as Boyle has stated that he has sworn off "big" pictures after doing "The Beach". I don't know if I would lump Boyle in with Mendes and Forster when it comes to action. 28 Days had some great action sequences that were suspenseful as well as did The Beach to a lesser extent. His Sci Fi film Sunshine had action and plenty of effects. Matt S's point is well taken about going back to more down to earth action, like suspenseful shootouts, assassination attempts, hand to hand fighting, etc would definitely fall into Boyle's wheelhouse and work well for Craig. I do believe that Craig will get himself into good fighting trim for Bond 25 ( he doesn't need to look like a middleweight boxer on fight night, just fit and capable) I just feel that this is a better approach overall for Bond and Craig's version / interpretation of the character.

I always wondered if this cockamamie idea was based on EON wanting to cast Chiwetel Ejiofor (hot off "12 Years a Slave") as the villain.
I don't blame Waltz for his lackluster Blofeld. The script there, too, gave him almost nothing to work with. "Cuckoo?"
How can you blame Logan when it wasn't his script that got made? And as for a cockamamie idea, I'm sure he had to submit a treatment and an outline to EON/MGM before he was given the go-ahead to write the script.

Reputable enough that I personally have no reason to doubt this. It’s not a site that would report something like “Brittany Spears to Be Next Bond Girl,” for example.
Boyle would be a solid, if slightly unexciting choice. If the script was right though he would make a very good film as he is incredibly capable. And in regards to Logan, I don't necessarily blame him. If anything I would blame the producers for hiring the wrong scribe. Having said that he had a hand in Skyfall which was sensational

I agree. But, as it says, if they don't like the script it's back to P&W's effort.
I'm amazed by this apparent turnaround by Danny Boyle, who I remember during T2 interviews saying he wouldn't want to do a big expensive action movie.
I'm going to be stubborn and say, this is a delaying tactic for the real announcement, and the timing of Hodge's writing time frame gives them until sometime in May to leak that his script has been rejected. And then in June we get the Mendes announcement. ;-)

1. The finished Mendes/Logan script was presented in March 2014. I doubt that they were working on it the whole time between October 2012 and March 2014 because during that time Mendes was working on his Willy Wonka project and Logan was working on Penny Dreadful.
When I think of Boyle imagery I don't think traditional Bond, but I did enjoy his Bond short from the Olympics and he's a very capable director. If he does accept, it will definitely stand out in the catalog! I just hope we can still make the release date as I'm growing impatient.

Trainspotting had some traditional Bond imagery!
...and I think that's the only one of his films I've seen. You guys always assign me lots of filmviewing homework when these "guess the director" conversations come up. Otherwise it'd be all film history for me.
Depends. Craig and I are only a few months apart in age. Some days I look puffy, some days I don't. It's a combination of what I ate or drank, how much sleep I got, and even the weather. Some people are lucky to not be so easily affected. Others not so much. But then some people are gravely ill but look fine from the outside, too. Nature is a funny thing.
When I cut out carbonated beverages of any kind and eat less, I always look better. The same goes for eating late. So, with a few drinks in him and some high living, Craig could easily look bloated and tired. Especially if it's later in the evening.

That MI6Community story says; "it was Logan who devised the Day of the Dead opening, the Rome meeting and car chase, the Mr. White scene, the Austrian spa and plane chase, the North African train ride and the finale in London...Additionally, the idea of Bond falling in love and leaving MI6 was always the big "hook" of the film from the outset. Additionally, the whole "everything is connected" angle was something that figured very early on in Mendes's conception of the film." Seems pretty much a Mendes/Logan movie to me. Yes, Logan's first draft was very different, but it was Logan that set out the key aspects of what we saw and the overall structure of the film and the story.

All this fretting over Craig not looking perfect at the moment is wasted energy - as is any guessing until Eon spills the beans. Just ask Hiddleston )

I wonder if the full Hiddleston story will ever be told? Or even if there really is a story. Probably subject to an iron clad NDA with steel teeth if there is.unless of course others know different...

I agree. Despite my skepticism, deep down I know Craig will pull it off. But another Mendes film, complete with the lousy music and general sense of malaise that permeated Spcectre? Yikes. That’s the worst case scenario by far.
It should be repeated that while some people liked Spectre, I’ve never heard anyone say they liked Waltz’s Blofeld or anything related to that plot. Doubling down on any of that seems like madness.

I think Spectre set up everything that Mendes wanted for the Bond movie he really wants to make, Bond meets Revolutionary Road. )
I think it also showed that Mendes can be a good Bond director, but make sure he doesn't get near the writers' room.
