I think Waltz was good in the Rome meeting and and at times later too. It was mostly the "half-brother" silliness that was bad.

Few things could torpedo my excitement more then if Sam Mendes directed again. Especially if Christoph Waltz returned.

I agree. Despite my skepticism, deep down I know Craig will pull it off. But another Mendes film, complete with the lousy music and general sense of malaise that permeated Spcectre? Yikes. That’s the worst case scenario by far.

It should be repeated that while some people liked Spectre, I’ve never heard anyone say they liked Waltz’s Blofeld or anything related to that plot. Doubling down on any of that seems like madness.

Mendes' Skyfall made $1.1bn, the biggest grossing movie, inflation adjusted, for the Bond franchise, and Spectre at $880m is the third largest grossing Bond movie, accounting for inflation. That's what matters for the studios.

I enjoyed Spectre but its flaws became more noticeable on repeat viewings. My only fear for B25 is the return of Thomas Newman. I'm hoping that Dave Arnold's tweet last year about finding Bond's passport indicates he's back and Newman has declined.

Skyfall is my favorite Bond movie so I'm thankful for Mendes for helping bring that film to life. That said I wasn't really that excited when he returned for Spectre. Because I already knew to a certain degree how the film was going to look, sound, and move because of my familiarity with his directing style. I prefer when each film has its own director to show us Bond and his world from a different viewpoint. Mende's showed us his viewpoint in Skyfall to enormous success and now I think it's time we have someone else have a crack at it instead of trying to recapture the lightning in a bottle success of Skyfall like they tried with Spectre. If he's brought back to direct again it would really seem like EON just couldn't get over Skyfall.

    Anyone seen this? http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2018/02/22/bond-25-john-hodge-danny-boyle

May be complete fiction but if true that is quite an interesting development

So first Villeneuve turned them down, then presumably Nolan, and now Boyle apparently.

Were any of these people actually asked? Has Ivan Reitman said that he's not the director of the next Bond film? Maybe Woody Allen is going to direct it. It's way too easy to start a rumour on the internet.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that the Danny Boyle story might have just not been true.......
Let's get ready for the next rumor.

I doubt Boyle or Nolan were actually approached to direct this film. I think DV might have been in talks with them but couldn’t do it due to other commitments. My guess is a director has been chosen and we just don’t know who it is yet.

I think only Villeneuve has publicly stated that he was in discussions with them but turned them down because he's already working on Dune. I don't know about Boyle but it wouldn't surprise me if they also already approached Nolan.

So at this point the likeliest is Yann DeMange?
    Yes. Consssssiderably.

I would say the most likely is Sam Mendes. 8-)

Matthew Vaughn has said he flew over to have discussions with Eon a while back...

Now, that would be a surprise. He is supposed to be working on 'I am Pilgrim', based on the book of the same name, which is about a spy called back to do one last mission. Most film projects never get past the development stage, so he could be free for Bond25.

Vaughn's last Kingsman film did very well, $400m worldwide gross on a $100m budget. Got a 66% audience Rotten Tomatoes score too.

I still think it will be Mendes for Bond25. But, Vaughn must be a strong candidate for a future Bond film.

Vaughan could rekindle some much needed brio and sense of fun. I would love to see Daniel have a crack at that (Spectre suggested that he could pull it off) The action would have a great kinetic 'Jeez Louise ' about it. Not sure how he would handle character and narrative though. I'd be a happy man nonetheless.

Spectre proved the opposite to me: he can’t pull it off. I’d also like a return to that style, but I think they should wait until they have a new Bond to do it. Let Craig’ Bond be Craig’s Bond for his send off.

If you don't think Craig can do "a sense of fun" get thee to Logan Lucky.
Craig's is a different funny than what we may be used to from the classic Bond films, but I still think his peculiar (cruel) sense of humour is consistently the best part of his four films. The parking valet scene from Casino... cracks me up just thinking about it!

I don't want to see the guy who directed Kingsman do a proper Bond film, the violence in that was literally like a zombie movie. Zero humanity, and like some other recent films I did not like, too much technical geewhizzery to make me genuinely care about the characters. Austin Powers was a more humane sendup of the spy genre.

Yeah I agree, I find the Kingsman films awfully crass.

But "Stardust" and "Layer Lake" are very different from the Kingsman movies. And X- men:First Class had action without lots of blood and gore.

they were all the same director?
somehow I've never seen Layer Cake, despite it once being recommended homework while we were all waiting for the first CraigBond.
but X-Men First Class was a good reboot/prequel for the X-Men series, after the previous films had gone right off the rails. And, what is rare amongst comic book films, it did make me care about the characters.

Kingsman 2 only made $100 million domestic. It was widely considered to have underperformed.

I slightly disagree. I felt his performance hinted at the possibility but the script was so lacklustre and the problems so legion that it was hard to tell. For me (not a dyed in the wool Craigist) he was not the problem.

Kingsman 2 made $411m theatrical + $80m home video on a budget of $104m. The people who made that profit are not complaining...

Gonna go out on a limb here and make a wild prediction based on just my own gut feelings. I think the director of Bond 25 is David McKenzie. McKenzie directed a fantastic action / crime drama / modern western in Hell Or High Water. The film had great action, suspense, excellent performances, a great script and was highly praised by critics. McKenzie also now has a big epic blockbuster on his resume in The Outlaw King (the story of Robert The Bruce) which completed filming in November 2017 and is scheduled for a November 2018 release. He's also from Scotland. Just making a wild prediction.
