Dunhill Layer Cake For Sale

I am selling my Dunhill Layer Cake - the only reason being I never wear it. I'm open to offers - I think most people have a sense of what these are worth.

This jacket was originally a 52 and the previous owner had it tailored. I have changed the zip out from the leather pull version and replaced with an original RiRi and Dunhill Puller - I will send the original zipper and the a spare pull.

The measurements are below:

Armpit to armpit 21"
Waist 20 1/4"
Sleeve 23 1/4"
Shoulder 20"
Back 25 1/2"
Zip 23"

I have the royale v3 Harrington in small and the TF Harrington in 48. Billy Reid in small, Barbour tokito in medium.

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like more information. I'm based in the UK but will ship internationally.

Aargh! Why do people insist on buying jackets then shrinking them then trying to sell them. Such a shame. If it was the 52 I'd be in too.

CRB, the previous owner tailored this one, not me.

I too would love an unaltered 52. Pity there are none. Thankfully I can wear my 54.

My impression is that these Dunhills and it's black sister jacket were so rare people got whatever size was available and altered it. Mine is one of two that I know of that are unaltered in the wild.

Best of luck with the sale, Grant.

Thanks Steve, would love to be selling an unaltered one! Hope you're still wearing yours!

Too hot for any jacket right now. Over 100F.

I did wear it to San Francisco a few months ago. It got recognized. First and only time that has happened.

Great jackets pretty sure the one I had was previously altered too. It the arms on these are really short, I also assume this was the previous owner too but I am awaiting mine coming back after alterations. Fingers crossed and good luck with the sale

    Hi there
I’m guessing you’ve sold the jacket by now? I wish Dunhill would release a few more!

    Hi all
Good to be welcomed to the forum. Those who’ve read my posts know I’ve caught the LC jacket bug. Just wondered if anyone has any experience with the Wested jackets? I have never owned a leather jacket before and thought it might be an idea to get a replica first to see if I feel good in it so that I can either continue or quit with the Dunhill hunt.

    Thanks all

I was lucky enough to buy it from GS

I can’t say I’ve worn it yet as I keep forgetting it’s in the wardrobe

    Welcome to the club, Wardlem.

While a very light jacket, the fact it's completely unlined means I have to wear ling sleeved shirts with mine. The inside of the sleeves feel odd against my skin in warm weather. YMMV.

Deanmart, while I haven't had the Wested Layer Cake jacket, they usually do fine reproductions. Since the Wested is lined it should wear like a normal leather jacket. Make sure to order the brown version, but ask if there is contrast stitching. The pictures don't show it, but it is an important part of the look of the jacket (even if it isn't obvious in some screenshots).

Thanks Westward_Drift. I'm actually going to their shop tomorrow to look at some samples and get measured up. I'm pretty sure they do the contrast stitching, as I have spoken with a guy who bought one of these but recently put it up on ebay. He said he requested matching stitching, but I did query this.

I actually was going to ask them if they would line it throughout with the red leather as per the Dunhill as I wanted the look to be as close as possible to the original. It is only ever going to be a cool weather jacket for me anyway, so I will always wear a thin jumper or long sleeves as a first layer.

RE the brown vs the black, I do think it is very hard to tell that the original is brown. It must be a very dark shade. If the brown Wested use is a very close match to the Dunhill (not that I have seen one in the flesh) I will definitely get the brown, but if not I would probably go with the black.

The brown is more a dark chocolate brown.

The interior is only partially lined in leather to allow for the interior pockets. The rest is unlined and the suede side of the leather is dyed a dark red, almost an oxblood.

If you haven't seen it, check out this thread:

The photos I posted of the jacket are still there.

Ah, I see, thanks for that. So where does the lining end ? Does it start at the zip and end past the pocket? I was able to see two pics on that thread
  • Westward_DriftWestward_Drift Posts: 3,113MI6 Agent
Yes, the lining starts at the zipper and ends after the pocket. The lining is an extra layer of leather with the sueded side exposed.

In the pics below you can see the vertical seam which continues along the armhole and then vertical at the top to where it meets the collar.

Thanks for the pics. I get it now. I wonder why Dunhill chose not to line this? Must feel a bit strange with suede direct in the skin. Looks damn cool, though.

That's fashion for you. Looks over comfort.

How did it go at Wested?

I’m going to get measured up again on Monday. I’ve asked few a few deviations from their stock jackets which they are happy to do.

    Hi all
I went for a custom LC. They are going to use a dark chocolate brown with a cherry red interior. Contrast stitch colour to be decided but from your photos Westward Drift, the woman at Wested thought a cream colour might be best. Any thoughts on that? She also reckoned the only way the Dunhill could have been contructed would have been to fuse two thin skins together. Interesting I thought. When it’s done I’ll post some pics

Cream colored stitching should be fine.

Be careful of the color of the interior. Too bright a cherry red and it will look like the Filmjackets XXXX replica I once owned.

Comparison pics with my Dunhill are here:

Thanks, yeah I had seen those pics already. The cherry sounds brighter than it is. I don’t think it is far off the Dunhill though. We were viewing your photos when selecting the colours as it happens.

Ok, here it is. I’m pretty happy with it as it is tailored for a great fit. The pics actually make the red appear quite garish, but it is a darker red than shown.
