If I had a nickel for everytime Fleming described a character shrugging their shoulders...I'd have enough money to buy the stoopid Rome y Julietta screen used cigar. X-( X-(

what if you took a drink every time Bond takes a drink?
the books are pretty quick reads, if you start right now you could probably be unconscious by dinner time

Oh don't be so fun spoilers...

I for one am fascinated with such stuff...

I did some seemingly ridiculous statistics about cinematic Bond like noting each lipstick colour Moneypenny is wearing in every film.

I may count all the shrugs shoulders in the books :)

Lipstick colours I could imagine being a hard one to judge, as what you're seeing would depend on how the DVD/BluRay you're watching has been colour balanced. Did you post the results on here?

In all seriousness, I can't say I've ever noticed this before at all. I do need to re-read all of the Fleming Bonds again admittedly. I suppose though that all authors have their favourite phrases that they use again and again without maybe even realising it. I'm sure then that Ian Fleming was no different in this regard to other writers of fiction.

That's true - for instance Raymomd Benson does mention Bond's favourite phrase is "So that's the score".

From the Fleming novels and stories? Is that in the Bedside Companion?

That's nothing compared to how many times David Weber has characters shrug in his Honor Harrington novels. Almost every freaking conversation. The later novels run 500-600 pages. That's a lot of shrugging.

With the Miss Marple stories, she nearly always says
Something like the killer had the eyes of ..... and then
Mention some old butcher who killer his wife or
Girlfriend. Or a local Politician who had an affair. :)

I was rereading TMWTGG there again and I noticed that Scaramanga shrugged when he met Bond in the bar of the brothel. I'll update you all if I happen to notice anything else!

Yes, Benson mentions it while discussing TB (though of course Bond had said/thought it earlier).

Was just reading DAD and noticed this very thing... "He shrugged his shoulders" and etc is one of those phrases that always bugs me and momentarily pulls me out of the fictive dream...I mean, what ELSE on the human body can you shrug BUT your shoulders? It should just be, "He shrugged," and that's it...
