After hearing what's been going on in the US, it seems clear that tighter restrictions, higher age restrictions and severe punishments for gun sellers who flout the law need implementation, along with schools being made more secure.
Giving the teachers guns makes them targets and just puts another gun within the school environment.
It's an impossible task....America just has too many firearms circulating already never mind new ones.
DP has a point in that in the absence of a firearm a killer could use a knife, but pulling a trigger for this games console playing generation is far removed from the actual act than getting close and stabbing someone to death, which takes a lot more effort than some people think.
It was either that.....or the priesthood

I discovered some interesting facts today..... well, it was on TV News. The population of the USA make up 4.4 % of the earth's total population. But these 4.4% own 40% of the privatly owned guns in the world.
Is that really neccesery or logical? Perhaps if Americans were ten times as free as we are....

About 36% of Americans own guns, so that would be about 1.6% of the earth's population owns 40% of the guns!

I'm not sure everyone with criminal intent can get a firearm illegally. A hardened criminal who is a part of a criminal network, sure. But the boys/men behind these massacres seldom are. Breivik, the terrorist responsible for the Utøya massacre, tried to get guns illegally. He even went to Hungary to get guns, but he failed. He had to join the Oslo Pistol Club and buy legally, something that takes at least six months. He wasn't stopped in time, but any waiting period increases the chances of stopping the crime. This probably would't apply to a market flooded with guns, such as the US or Afghanistan.

I think it must be different in us, they have gun markets and such, and purely by the law of averages some sellers will be unscrupulous. Also with the sheer amount of guns in circulation many a lot of people will know someone who knows someone who has a gun.
The UK doesn't have a gun problem in the way the US does, but we do have an horrific knife crime issue, that said if I wanted an illegal gun I could get one within a few days sadly.

I'm guessing many countries have similar crime
Levels as the US but America seems to have a
Paranoia, that as a citizen you are under direct
Threat from it at all times. Hence why we hear of
Cases of people wanting to carry their GUNS on
Them. Even when out shopping etc .
I have a friend who shoots and I seem to remember
Some of the conditions he has to follow are.
Rifle has to be kept in a locked metal gun cabinet
Stored ( unloaded ) with the ammunition also
Stored in a separate locked cabinet

Although I'll admit I don't have any answers but to simply
Carry on doing Nothing , will achieve Nothing.

And still many people are dying in Syria. Bombed by their own government. Also the situation in the DRC does not change, this is only Africa and so does not count to many people in the world but many more than 5 million people have died and they continue to suffer and die every day.
  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,427MI6 Agent
Good point, Joshua. Yemen is hell on earth too.
I guess it's human nature to relate more to people who look like us and have a culture we feel we understand. It shouldn't be that way, but I fear it is.

When it comes to the US gun culture I suspect many Europeans don't understand them. "Why do they want military rifles, why can't they just have hunting rifles?"
But many Americans see guns as a guarantee against dictatorship and terrorism. This is mostly a fantasy in my opinion. The gun is far more likely to be used in an accident or suicide than ever be involved fighting terrorists or the evil government.

There is an election in Italy now. The results will probably be conclusive, the majority winner will form a stable government that will rule for years without a single corruption scandal. :))

So, the SPD members voted pro Grand Coalition with 66% - after 6 months, we have a gouvernment.

I have to ask: while Germany was trying to from a new government, did it make you feel slightly more Latin or Mediterranean? Did it lend a new, more hot-blooded vibe to politics? :))

I will say Donald Trump will only last one term. If he runs again in 2020, I say he will get voted out, as I think his countrymen would be sick of him by then.

Italy has voted, a new government is not in sight - nothing new there...
We may have new elections before the elected parties are able to find a majority.

However seeing Berlusconi again in the headlines - I've had plenty of "The return of the Mummy" moments :o

Do you think the Clintons will get divorced?

Think about it. Both of them are now in their 70s, neither is going to run for public office anymore, and Chelsea is married and raising her own family. If one of them broached the subject to the other, what do you think the response would be?
  • ThunderpussyThunderpussy Behind you !Posts: 63,792MI6 Agent
To be honest, I think that's more of a personal matter for them, than a political discussion ?

Xi Jinping has made himself leader of China for life, making him perhaps the most powerful leader in the country since Mao. Trump said this is great and wondered if this was a good idea for the US. If any other US president had said the same we would have assumed it was a joke. But Trump has as a rule showed more admiration for authoritarian leaders than the democratically elected ones.

I'm not sure about 'sick' but they'll definitely by exhausted by 2020 ... keeping up with the antics in the WH is a full time job !!!
