I thought he moved to Argentina and died of old age.

That was the rumour. I recall my late father (he was in the Home Guard as a young man) telling me that there was a rumour after the war that he'd escaped by submarine to Peru!

I'm so happy everyone got the point of my post :))

The pensioner was 70+, he cares for his wife, his overnight guests were in his house uninvited, he thought his life was in danger so..... the rest is history. The dead guy had form and was a wanted man - live by the sword then die by the sword - that’s karma!

An Englishman’s home is his castle and he has the right to self defence. This guy deserves a medal not a sentance, he will carry a heavy burden for the rest of his life anyway (having killed someone). For the rest who choose to enter a house uninvited this should send a clear signal - you reap what you sow.

If this goes any other way, it truly will be an injustice.

    Cheers :007)

Now this thread is back from the dead, shouldn't it be renamed? At 30 pages, it isn't any more 'short-lived' than Craig's Bond in CR!

The modern relevance is mentioned at the beginning of my post. Many pro-gun people claim that gun control is just what Hitler did to take power away from the people. The claim is often used as a reason against gun control, but it is based on a falsehood.

I wonder why you were relieved "as to the content after seeing the meme"? I assume you didn't think I would ever post anything positive about Adolf Hitler, since we know each other well enough to know none of us would do such a thing.

In my country the law about self defence is very much the same as in England. You can not kill anybody who robs you or your home unless you are or your family are in danger of being killed. In the cities the crime is very much higher but in the countryside then there is not crime such as burglaries or such. There will be of course but I cannot remember hearing about such things. Wire fence and things get stolen often and other crimes are many.
Also guns are much the same as English laws. A person cannot own a gun unless they can give a good reason and also must be checked for records of crime and mental health before he can get a gun licence.
Personally, I do not know the details I think the man was correct. There were two intruders in his home at night and one had a screw driver. Lady Rose I think made the best comment on this.

It is always easy to say but I had a single barrel shotgun and always had the gun to hand. If any intruder came to rob me or do my family harm they would have been shot and the body dumped in the bush for the wildlife to eat where they could never be found. Before I could shoot though they would have already been killed by my dog!

I hope no charges are made against this man.

I had visions of the not so short non argumentative polite discussion political thread being gone for ever... Until I actually read the post that is :)
Surely the use of such images are just used to demonise gun control, used by people such as the NRA or its supporters? my point about modern relevance was whether you had spotted any parralels with such loosening of gun control as was done by Hitler and his government?

I just heard a radio report on the upcoming election. It's an odd election even in these times. Prime Minister Viktor Orban will definitely be re-elected. He is an ethnic nationality who says the nation must be for ethnic Hungarians. Immigration is the one important theme in the election and in the state controlled media. Immigrants are shown as a huge existential threat to the country, the fact there are very few immigrants in Hungary doesn't seem to matter. Diplomats are told by the government to gather negative information about immigrants for use in the election.
Orban has gathered a lot of power over media, the courts etc.

I think it's sad that a country that got their freedom from communism and the Soviet Union are again falling into authoritarian rule and extreme ideology.

I'm becoming increasingly alarmed by what's happening in Syria and around the Syrian problem. Again Russia shows its dubious motives by stopping any investigation into if chemical weapons were actually used, an admission of guilt so it seems. I don't want to see elevated military action but diplomacy is simply not working, sanctions have little effect. Is there a political solution or have we missed our chance when Obama went back on his word and in the UK Labour vetoed any UK military action?

The situation is very serious, yes. Both Russia and the USA proposed an UN-led investigation. Russia wanted an investigation that only gathers fact, but the UN Security Counsil will decide who's to blame (So Russia can veto if the results are "wrong"). The US wanted the investigating body to place responsibility themselves. Both countries vetoed each other.

This is regretable, since an investigation would be best. I don't think it's wise of Trump to give himself a deadline for a (military?) response. This situation can get even worse if the US bomb a location in Syria where there are Russian who get killed.

The way I read the larger picture is that Russia has pushed and pushed to see how far they can go, and now the West has had enough.

Russia's ambassador to Lebanon has said any US missiles fired at Syria would be shot down and the launch sites targeted, a step which could trigger a major escalation in the Syrian war. (from The Independent)

Russia is a bully. Unless the west want a repeat
Of WW2 when they tried to keep Hitler happy. They
Must stand up to Russian aggression.

I agree with number 24, the sh1t is about to hit the fan, Russia has meddled in many affairs and the international nations should have a focused response, but does anyone even the US have any appetite for a military response? Russias stance appears to be one of threatening any nation who interferes with its affairs.

It's right to draw a line with Russian now, but it's dangerous. The regime's narrative has been that the West is hostile. Russia can end up feeling pressured and with the back to the wall. A desperate Russia isn't good. They can't do much economically. Their GDP is the size of Spain's and the oligarcs closest to Putin lost 15-20% of their wealth only yesterday. Their only leverage economically is natural gas and the winter is over.

Militarilly they can't do a full on attack like they may have been able to during the cold war. They might try hybrid warfare to cause problems in places like the Baltics, but Putin's adventure in eastern Ukraine may have cost more than the benefits. Putin may hesitate next time. I doubt the Russians will shoot back at an US Navy aircraft carrier, submarine etc. if the Americans bomb Syria, but if they do the results can be horrible.

That leaves politics and non-violent hybrid warfare. Russia could work through new friends such as Turkey (just bought an anti-air missile defence system from Russia) and Hungary (also moving closer to Putin).
Russia might also use hackers, propaganda, organized crime etc.

The military commander of the Russian armed forces now says they will only defend their own personel in case of an American attack against Syria. Seems far more sane than what the Russian ambassador to Lebanon said.

Too early to say. We have to wait until after the US bombing to see the reaction from Russia. Action speaks louder than words.

    Trump tweeted:"Get ready, Russia."
Isn't that exactly what he said was stupid and he would never do - telling the enemy what he was going to do?
