I have been following this and must say that Biden did not really look good there.

I have no idea how you could beat Trump in a debate but he simply ran over Biden and the moderator like he did with his republican colleagues in 2016.

Imo the only people who could stand up against him would have been Kamala Harris and Cory Booker.
Imo Biden is a nice chap for a politician but he was an unfortunate vote and I am seriously concerned that he‘ll not win the election.

Never really been a follower of US politics, however have seen a number of references (via the likes of Twitter) to Biden wearing a wire under his jacket which became evident at one stage & also something like an IV line on one of his wrists? Was this the case or is it just nonsense?

Reading between the lines of what the UK journos are 'reporting', it just sounds like the whole thing was an embarrassing mess with both candidates acting like petulant kids all the way through & the tv mediator being next to useless. I wouldn't think that the situation will change anytime soon at the next one (presuming there is a series of these things going on?).

Not sure where the wearing a wire thing is really coming from.....

Anyhow, in today‘s tec, there is no need to wearing a wire - all goes wireless if someone really wants to do it. Personally I doubt that it happened until I see clear evidence.

My impression is that the debate was a mess, yes. But Trump has been playing up Biden as a senile, sleepy man, so all Biden had to do was not slip up and stand up to him to because Trump has been playing Biden down. Trump interupted Biden all the time in spite of the Fox News moderator asking him to behave several times, but Biden stayed cool. Most commentators say Biden did best.

Because of the messy and immature style it can be said the American people lost.

teh msot horrible part was where Trump was challenged to make a stand against far-right, neo-fascisit groups like Proud Boys and didn't. Instead his message to Proud Boys was: "Stand back and stand by" :o :o :o
    The Proud Boys loved it.
This is a horrible message for a president to give to a violent neo-fascist group, especially combined with Trump's message that the only way he can lose the election is by fraud. any president before him, including the both Bushes and Reagan wouldn't hesitate to distance themselves from those groups, but Trump seems to treat them as his streetfighters. The FBI classifies the Proud Boys as an extremist group with ties to white nationalism.
    It's a dark day for America :(

Chris Cuomo said that Biden‘s job against Trump was just to stay calm and to show that he‘s not an ass like him :))

Stayed up to watch all of the debate as part of university research work- first impressions were that it was pretty dreadful for both candidates. Very bad-tempered throughout. Worst moment for Trump was refusing to condemn white supremacists, and claiming the election would be rigged. Worst moment for Biden was not being able to name a single law enforcement group that supported his police reform plans.

Worst of all, this morning you have Russian and Chinese state news reporters shaking their heads woefully at the low standards of democratic debate in the United States... :s :#

Yes, that's why Putin and his secret services supports Trump. AfD and other "chaos-agents" in western countries. He wants to point at our democrasies and say: "Look at their chaos and how bad leaders they get. You're lucky I'm holdking Russia in a firm grip."

Pretty scary thought that those 2 are the best candidates on offer!

Biden is experienced and average, Trump is the worst US president ever by a mile - so I agree.

I have a question to our friends in the US:

I know that a President can only 2 presidencies - so if Trump loses in 2020, could he theoretically run again for 2024?

The goal of a political party is to win elections. So come 2024, I’m not sure the Republican Party would want to nominate someone as their candidate if they had lost the previous election. Most presidents “retire” from politics after losing an election/serving their two terms anyway...buuuut sounds like Trump won’t go that easy if he does lose though... :#

if Trump would lose the election, you can make sure that he and the GOP make it sound like a total victory :D

It has only happened once that a president gets a second term with another president having a term in between, but we can all agree Trump is never conventional. My guess is that if hie loses Trump will brag immnesly and say he was the best president in the history of the world, but he was robbed of a second term by the Democrats.
  • Westward_DriftWestward_Drift Posts: 3,113MI6 Agent
Yes, he could run again unless he were to be impeached again and convicted by the Senate. One potential penalty available upon conviction is the inability to hold another federal office.

With any luck he will have all his loans called in, go bankrupt, and end up in New York state prison for fraud and tax evasion.

I think its fairly likely now that if Biden wins, he won't serve a full term. He would be the oldest president upon taking up office ( Biden's 78 vs Trump's 70 and Reagan's 69), and this, coupled with all the media speculation about his health, makes me think he might not run again in 2024. What do others think of this possibility?

Trump is 74 and not 70, but you have a point. No, I doubt Biden will run for s second term. That's why there was so much attenton to his choise of Kamala Harries as VP while people barely know Mike Pence's name.

You guys are all speculating from other countries. Biden has run and never been made candidate since many times. If he’s the best they can throw up there there is trouble. The media hates trump and it’s obvious and you could see their contempt all the way back even in 2016. I remember that an anchor who moderated a debate Martha Radditz was nearly in tears when he won election night last time. At least you know what you get with him, argumentative but does not just try to say whatever to get elected. He offered to say whatever the moderator asked regarding white supremacy but was interrupted and the media ran with it. From day one he had a target on his back and no media support.

The opposite party tried everything they possibly could to circumvent his presidency. I’m not saying he’s the answer but he’s the better of what we have had. Hilary was as crooked as it came and it even came out in our senate that she was involved with the Russian collusion argument to circumvent her issue with national security. But the media would not run with it.

Remember Benghazi and Hilary not sending a drone, getting the U.S. ambassador killed. Obama won a prize for not doing anything for what they thought he would accomplish. Obama divided America and that’s why you have Trump.
Trumps team has actually made strides in the Middle East and North KoreA. If there was no COVID would have been a landslide. Now it’ll be close in my opinion. But try to actually listen to the news and facts, not just the opinion of the news and the celebrities who are so out of touch with an average American person.

A friend from the USA called me after the last US election and apologised, surprise I asked why his response ‘Only we a country of 300 million could put ourselves in the position of having to choose the least worst candidate, and still get it wrong!’

My response was **** happens and in 5 years or so you can put it write

His response to me recently - ‘Proof that history does repeat itself!’

My response’Could be worst we got Boris at least yours will die of old age first!’

I agree, Barbel but I would have preferred to let the comment stay like it is.
It reveals the personality of the poster ( it was not his first time) and the state of the political „discussion“.

Just to make it clear: I have not reported the offending post nor demanded any moderator action and I have decided not to comment on it as well.

And to concur with the above-
The offending post was not reported by nor discussed with Higgins. I decided to edit it and ban the member concerned after he started a new thread (now deleted) in a different forum which I also found objectionable.
  • Ens007Ens007 EnglandPosts: 863MI6 Agent
Not got a clue what got posted here (and for that matter I don't want to know judging by the course of action deemed necessary) - but truly disappointing to see that something deemed racist was posted in this forum. There's absolutely no place for that anywhere in society, let alone in here.

Thanks to Barbel for taking the appropriate & decisive action.

Whilst we may not agree in terms of politics (amongst other things!) in here, surely to god we can be respectful in terms of race, creed, colour et al.

Trump has condemed Proud boys and white supremacy groups in general in a phone interview with Fox News.

"If I say it a hundred times it still won't be enough, because it's fake news" he said. No it's not. It's because you failed to condem them in the presidential debate when you were asked to, then told the Proud Boys to "stand by".
I honestly don't know if Trump was treating Proud Boys as his streetfighters when he said that or (as the White House later claimed" he thought "stand down" and "stand by" means the same, but I'm sure Proud Boys sees the statemet as a handshake and a wink from the commander in chief.

A short podcast from BBC Witness: "Why the US rejected universal healthcare".

Harry Truman tried to give everyone access to healthcare by having health insurance paid via taxes. The Medical Association (doctors) feared losing income, so they started one of the costliest political lobbying campaigns at the time. They claimed Lenin had said universal healthcare was a cornerstone in the socialist state. This was a lie. They also coined the phrase "socialist medicine".
It's more complicated, but I found the podcast interesting.

Talking about how to keep voters off from the election:

If anyone know how to cheat in an election, it‘s the GOP!

Texas gov has cut ballot drop-off sites dramatically and that will result in terribly long lines in front of the remaining ones and long journeys

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/10/01/texas-voting-abbott/

    >>Harris County, which includes Houston and has more than 4.7 million residents, is the state’s largest county and the third largest in the United States, according to the census. According to the Austin American-Statesman, Harris County has 12 ballot drop-off sites; Travis County, which includes Austin and has a population of 1.2 million, has four sites.<<

And those are now being cut to one.....

By contrast, Kenosha County, Wis., has 17 mail-in ballot drop boxes for a population of about 170,000, according to the Kenosha News.
