In Australia the Government (or at least the taxpayer) has just spent $122 million on a postal vote to decide whether same sex couples should be able to be legally married.
Personally I could care less. If you're a Catholic and a church goer by all means go nuts. If not and you're an atheist like myself who cares? Each to their own I guess if you even have an opinion.
For mine I think it could have been money better spent elsewhere; police force, immigration, hospitals, education etc.
They should just pass the law like we did in NZ without public consultation
You're all correct that I'm being facetious. Something I despise is when people go off on the flimsiest of tangents to try to argue their position, often using a lack of evidence as evidence. Thus, Sherlock Holmes and Watson (like Batman and Robin) are secretly gay lovers,
I was convinced Adam West (Batman) was gay when he never got an erection (not that I was looking but in that outfit/underpants?) on screen when Julie Newmar (Catwoman) used to flirt with him in the series. I know he was quite the ladies man in real life but she was something else - what was not to like, she was stunning. Probably had some sort of anti Viagra device in that Utility Belt of his. 8-)
I was a boy in the 1970s, when Batman was rerun incessantly, and I will say among my first burgeoning understandings of my rampant heterosexuality was seeing Julie Newmar in a catsuit.
For me, it was Julie Newmar, Farrah Fawcett, Barbara Feldon, Yvonne Craig, and Diana Rigg. There were others in there ,too, but these were the leaders.
Interesting thread this is turning out to be!
Things learnt so far: Adam West sellotaped his manhood to his thigh
Some people think M is gay as he works in male dominated situation in books written by a man in the 1950's
Gassy man is a rampant heterosexual! And chose a discussion on homosexuality to divulge this... Interesting
These are all very stereotypical jokes ect, with my photo
Of the Village People, But I hope any gay members of AJB
Will not take offence. It is only some affectionate joking.

Actually, the stereotypes are germane, as absent of any direct evidence, one would likely have to draw upon them, as I tried to lampoon in my original post. For the record, if M was gay, it wouldn't change a thing for me.

My interest is purely academic, not that there's anything wrong with that.

No offense or anything, but I think this has to be one of the most absurd ideas in the history of James Bond. Could he be gay? No way in heck-hell! That's just 'M's' character, why would there be any homosexuality in MI6, why would Ian Fleming in his right mind want to turn from the focus on 007 himself just to do that with the head of MI6? I can't word this any better! In my opinion this idea is just absurd.

Which I think is GM's while point in making this thread. Some people draw ridiculous conclusions from little or no actual evidence, they seem to add 2 and 2 and get 5.
In reality Fleming based M on a real life person, who at the time of writing would in no way be in that position if he were gay. Homosexuality was illegal in the UK then and a real M would be far too easily compromised and at odds with the establishment of the day.

one would assume that's a security risk, but J Edgar Hoover was head of the FBI for decades and was himself the blackmail-master. Despite the rumours, he held his job even through the Red Scare, and would have outlasted Nixon if he hadn't died in office of old age first
Fleming wrote some outrageous stuff about homosexuality (eg it was the result of having given women the vote, is that from Goldfinger?), so I highly doubt he intended one of his main recurring characters to be gay. Pearson even suggests M was closer to Fleming in real life than Bond was: the man behind the desk who planned the field-agents' exciting missions for them.
But Fleming did associate with literary circles his whole life. Despite his own ostentatious heterosexuality, he must have known many gay men who were out and proud?
Bond came to the conclusion that Tilly Masterton was one of those girls whose hormones had got mixed up. He knew the type well and thought they and their male counterparts were a direct consequence of giving votes to women and 'sex equality'. As a result of fifty years of emancipation, feminine qualities were dying out or being transferred to the males. Pansies of both sexes were everywhere, not yet completely homosexual, but confused, not knowing what they were. The result was a herd of unhappy sexual misfits—barren and full of frustrations, the women wanting to dominate and the men to be nannied. He was sorry for them, but he had no time for them.
(PAN edition, pg. 189)
so is that Fleming putting his own thoughts into Bond's head, or is he imagining how a tough Bond type character would think if he really existed?

I doubt any gay men were out in any sort of obvious way. Homosexuality was only legalised here in 1967. It was punishable by prison and many gay men ended up serving severe sentences. I'm sure there was some sort of knowledge about some men which a blind eye was turned to but I suppose this is why gay men were forced to be clandestine about their natural state? Thankfully we live in a more tolerant time and people are free to live how they choose or were born.
For Bernard Lee's M, Bond's reference to his past antics in Hong Kong (FRWL) comes close to settling the question in favour of him being straight, but I always found that jokey moment jarring... essentially because a sort of asexuality best suits the role.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

Well, give him enough cognac with an overdose of Bon Bois and he will have an interesting experience with anyone.
