We don't get an indication on M's sexual preferences. I've explained this on another thread that i alway's thought M was always professional and that he would leave his personal life at home.
Have you ever heard of the Emancipation Proclamation?"

For Bernard Lee's M, Bond's reference to his past antics in Hong Kong (FRWL) comes close to settling the question in favour of him being straight, but I always found that jokey moment jarring... essentially because a sort of asexuality best suits the role.

Well, give him enough cognac with an overdose of Bon Bois and he will have an interesting experience with anyone.

Then it's a shame about his liver, sir.

    Sorry... Tokyo, not Hong Kong.

    And it's a pity about M's liver - not a shame.

    Forgive my erroneous Bond scholarship!

Who knows? Maybe M is code for Mother. In which case... is Q a raving Queen?

I don't think Fleming would have went along with this theory plus he has already disproved it anyhow by having M whistle in TMWTGG! :D

I was checking throughout the thread to see if anyone would mention this.
