Are there seriously any Bond fans who dislike Connery's portrayal?

I can't imagine there would be many, but do any fans actually dislike Connery's Bond? If so what are their reasons?

    I can't see how anyone could ?:) He's the original and therefore the benchmark, I'm too young to have experienced the sheer hysteria surrounding him and the bond films at a time when cultural revolution was happening. Younger Bond fans may not appreciate his films so much and some are prone to pointing out production faults or inconsistencies in the films but we must consider their age and when they were made. Some are critical of connery in YOLT.... Which I don't get at all, his first 4 were remarkable performances, Sean was equally cunning and deadly but like literary bond shows doubt and panic at times. It's surely impossible for any bond fan not to appreciate connery even if his films aren't your favourites.
    Can I just ask, what's your motivation for these posts?
    It was either that.....or the priesthood

    Are there Led Zeppelin fans who dislike Stairway To Heaven? No because it's blasphemy. :)) The same goes for people who dislike Connery. The only one I know of is my nine year old cousin who is a Craig fan boy.

    He played it too masculine, too Scottish and far too
    Good at the physical side of Bond, ........ but apart from
    That he was OK. :D

    Only in DAF as he looked way out of shape for a 00 agent!

    I mean Roger was way past it in AVTAK but he had not piled on the pounds!!! :))

    8-) 7I think so, but just join in the fun. Russel Brand for the next
    007 -{ no one could seriously disagree. :))
    He's the modern Connery, and as they apparently wanted to
    Replace Roger after TMWTGG Benny Hill would have been
    My choice . So macho -{

    Fans have their favorites, but I've never really met a hardcore Bond fan who disliked Connery. They just preferred Roger or Pierce. The only fans I've met who didn't like Connery were fans of the Craig era who assumed that any Bond movie made pre-Craig (including Connery's) was automatically going to be cheezy and Austin Powers-like. They actually hadn't seen a Connery Bond film and weren't interested because it was before their time.

    I love Connery's portrayal in his first four Bond films. But from YOLT onwards I don't really care for his portrayal as he got fatter, less groomed and more bored.

    Forums are about discussion, and that's what I try to get people to engage in. We're all fans but with Bond especially there's so much to discuss with 6 actors sharing the part over 6 decades. I personally can't see how anyone could dislike the portrayal of the man who started it and brought huge quality to the role and films. But you never know if you don't ask.
    It would take someone brave to admit it, but that's for them to speak out if they want. That's what the thread does, invite discussion.. There's no hidden agenda in these posts, I'm a huge Bond fan and genuinely like people to consider/discuss the points made. Like with the Roger Moore post about his first two films, it's just about getting people to think and see if they considered that angle before. It doesn't mean I want people to agree with the question, or answer. If I think a possible view is worth discussing I'll share it. Even if I don't agree with the angle I'm asking people to ponder, it's purely for discussion and to open up opinion for fans.

    I bet someone. somewhere in this big zany world of ours, saw Dr No in 1962 and complained this new actor just didn't capture the magic that made Barry Nelson's definitive performance eight years earlier so memorable
    presuming anybody on the planet even remembered it

    in the consensus reality I'm more familiar with, I in fact knew a few folks who got on the bus with the Spy Who Loved Me who first thought seeing an older film was that the old guy wasn't getting the character right
    maybe even me, for the first five minutes of whichever Connery movie I first saw

    I've never met a fan who was bothered by Connery's performance, though some consider other actors to have been better. But I've met more than a few non-fans who don't get it, most women.

    Love the analogy re: Led Zeppelin and Stairway To Heaven. One of their greatest songs and as time goes on I really prefer to listen to the live version from 'The Song Remains The Same'. Personally I think Kashmir was their greatest song but that's for another time and in the Off Topic section.

    In my opinion Dr. No is as good a Bond film as there has been but with regards to Connery, as good as he was in Dr. No, I felt he got much better in FRWL, GF and TB. YOLT and DAF as have many have said he looked out of shape and a bit bored and I prefer all the other films as well.

    Back to the greatest band of all time (in my opinion anyway), the first album was brilliant as were the subsequent albums including their live album they were second to none but after that they weren't as good and this is how I feel about Connery. First four films excellent and his portrayal of Bond I can't fault but after that he wasn't so good.

    I think Connery was the best Bond when he was at his best, but he wasn't when he wasn't at his best.

    When he was up, he was up, and when he was down, he was down. But when he
    was only half way interested, he was neither up nor down. ;)

    I like that even though he said he was done with Bond, he still came out of retirement to lend his voice for the FRWL video game.

    I love all of his performances, including YOLT, DAF and NSNA. I don't recall tha I ever saw boredom, but his style matured. He brought a sense of fun and a twinkle in his eye to his later performances, a more mature, relaxed style. -{
