Home Cinema / Hi-Fi Setup

I have not upgraded my main TV (55” Sony) with separate Sony amp and 5.1 surround since I moved into my new house 8 years ago. It’s used to play blu-rays, stream movies and PS4 etc in 1080P however the picture is really awful by today’s standards (even compared to very cheap 1080P TV's due to the age and huge advances in tech). Ive decided its about time to grab a new TV that will be future proof for years to come (hopefully).

After doing some reading, lots of stuff has occurred since I bought mine many years ago with 4K, HDR, ATMOS etc

Anybody got the Dolby ATMOS surround setup at home with in-ceiling speakers or upwards firing speakers?? Reading other forums people seem to be well impressed and it appears to be here to stay

I've seen/ heard the atmos system in a company we sometimes work with showroom ( Wall of Sound) it's impressive though I wouldn't be keen on speakers mounted in the ceiling as it causes all sorts if problems with vibrations of wiring, pipework etc in the ceiling void which ruin sound. They had up facing speakers on pin stands, the bass resonance and surround sound were cinema quality but I believe the system would be lost on not very large rooms. I have a Sony Brava 4k kd 49" from last year which I'm very impressed with and will probably keep until the Sony oled comes down to realistic prices. For sound I have both a sonos system with surround sound that links up with a play bar under the TV, which also connect wirelessly to a speakerbar in the Kitchen and can connect to smaller speakers in other rooms which can be moved around or even taken on holiday as they are portable ( bit like a bose mini soundlink). So when I'm alone and the wife is out I can watch a film with every speaker in the house on or use them individually via Bluetooth. another feature I use a lot is linking my phone to the main playbar in the lounge and basically piping my music all round the house. The issue I have with tv's is you pay a massive premium for very current tech now and in 12 months time they are a fraction of the cost. I'm not sure my eyes can see a picture any better than the 4k set I've got, I also like how the Sony tv's have a very slim frame around the screen which makes the screen appear like it's just there almost floating.

I recently went to purchase a 40 inch TV blimey they are huge these days! I reckon most buy the latest 75 inch TV and sit in next doors house at the end of the garden to watch them. How the hell do they fit in a standard semi?

I was rather put off large screen TVs and surround sound after a drunken night on the town and ending up at a mates house retiring to his man cave and watching porn with the lads on his 60+ TV. Christ it was life size! Initially fine on the wide angle stuff but a close up a a 60 inch clam shell getting hammered by the equivalent peperami had us all fighting for the remote and the neibours banging on the wall! Never again Ben Dover!!! I think I got PTSD I cannot look at a large screen TV without thinking of that night and laughing my Charlie’s off.

Still each to his own - good luck.

    Cheers :007)

Youre right of course, 49" is the biggest TV my room can take, my friend has huge TV I think it's a 75, but his room is massive and your sat 15 - 20 foot away from it, his room is 10 meters by 18 meters so a big TV suits it. In most houses though you simply dont need a huge TV, it's like sitting on the front row in the cinema, no does it.

I have a living room 8 x 5 metres, I would say the sofa is dead centre and around 4 metres from the TV which is mounted on a very large wall. I am tempted to go for a 75" since we sit quite far away

I love chucking a blu-ray in and ramping up the volume for booming surround (though my mrs normally complains :)) )

Don't fancy speakers in ceiling so if I do go for ATMOS at some point etc it would be Upfiring Speakers to bounce the sound off the ceiling. Think I will go see a few Demos when on holiday end of year.

Any TV will be an amazing upgrade as mine is so out of date, it was the biggest and best Sony Bravia I could afford 8 / 9 years go. Any cheap one in the shops blows it away picture quality wise so literally anything would be a gigantic upgrade
