why was Blofeld's outcome left unclear in DAF?

It always struck me as a bit annoying that Blofeld's death never occurred in DAF.. It starts with Bond's revenge against Blofeld. Then at the end on the oil rig , Bond is playing with Blofeld at the controls and bumping him around, then the oil rig's on fire and it's just assumed Blofeld died or can't escape..why? was it deliberately left open for the character to return or just a lousy death scene! Having said this I'm delighted we see Bond finish him off in For Your Eyes Only, in a cracking opening scene. One of Moore's best moments as Bond. Plus a surprise to the audience at the time.
