    I'm frequently in awe of the knowledge and dedication on display from what I'll refer to here as the "inner circle" - the gents Donk mentioned by name above. But if you're going to lament the stagnation of this forum, you must at least consider how often new blood here is run off for nothing more than asking a question whose answer is buried somewhere in here among tens of thousands of posts, or responded to with derisive in-jokes that make them feel excluded. I've been here for 11 years and see it all too frequently. There are a lot of helpful and kind folks on here, but there's also a clubhouse mentality that doesn't really seem eager for new blood and is first in line to make a naive newcomer feel foolish.

    On the props vs clothes tip, I'd have to once again say I bet lots of members would love to engage more actively in props and replicas, but the old guard tends to guard access - to information, to limited runs of handmade items, etc - in a way that boxes out new blood.

    Just something to consider in the year ahead! -{

    Sorry, but I don't agree, Yes there is and always have been an "inner sanctum" that is because those of us who worked for the production company share information, but just because YOU haven't been lucky enough to be asked in dont mean we dont accept new blood, you are totally wrong about that. If you have interacted with us and built up a trust then you get in, simples.

    Inside jokes ? yes we treat this place like an English Pub and have fun with each other, mostly taking the piss out of each other.

    As for prop runs, Yes they are limited, very limited, that limited that not all said friends get included. Should we share knowledge ? I think we do to an extent, are we going to give out every detail from what we own or have spent many years researching to some whinge bag that wants the info but cant be bothered to make friends or research for them selves, then NO :D

    The reason Im answering you HalfMonk is because not long ago I was asked what you were like from a friend, I said that you always seemed ok, obviously you dont feel the same and feel excluded -{

    But you mistakenly assume I'm talking about my own experience. I've been lucky enough to be included on several prop replica runs from the amazing craftspeople on here, and I'm privileged to have pieces in my collection from minigeff, Ed, and several other talented individuals in my collection. Just speaking of a general attitude on the boards that I've witnessed from being here for a decade (and on display above, in your sort of unnecessarily hostile response?).

    I certainly didn't mean any offense. Just sharing what I've seen on the boards over the years, since the question seemed to be sincerely asked, and all.

    I appreciate Higgins taking my comment as the anecdotal observation it was.

    If you think about the forums as "content" - and this might be a wobbly analogy, but bear with me - that content has creators and end-users. The creators are the old-school experts here, and the end-users are the folks who are here to tap into that resource. People come to learn things from them, to get knowledge of some kind of another. Might be historical knowledge, might be technical expertise, might be where to find 007's shoes. When the content creators engage that audience well, that dynamic will flourish.

    That might be why you see the forums turning increasingly to clothing; along with the fact that people can easily procure that clothing (as opposed to a rare prop or firearm) and the fact that clothing is something one uses every day, you have content creators like Matt S and David, who are particularly gifted in engaging with that audience. On top of their committed respective efforts outside the forums, they're always quick with a polite, knowledgeable answer in here So that area thrives. That might be why it seems a little lopsided at the moment regarding engagement on the forums?
  • Asp9mmAsp9mm Over the Hills and Far Away.Posts: 7,535MI6 Agent
    This is true HH. And as you know, the downside of prop collecting is that sharing isn't always an option. Divulging details can seriously jeopardise your investment. Nature of the beast. The same of course, can also be true of clothes collecting immediately following the identification of an item. Divulging what that item is to the whole world before you or your mates have sourced one, usually means you have no chance, especially if that item is discontinued or rare. There are still CR clothing items that have been ID'd by a few that haven't been shared. That's because those items are proving exceptionally difficult to find.

    It's doubtful I will ever meet with any members from ajb, which is a shame as I value my interaction here with quite a few, of course you should never say never.
    With regard to the thread subject and op, surely the strength of a forum lies in the posts by the members? If posts are becoming an issue for some then they should post about what interests them, or bring old posts back to life. AJB does from time to time lurch into very Un bondian territory but with such lack of a new movie or news about one thats to be expected. It's sometimes disheartening to see the active subject board looking like a classified ads section but if that's what active members are posting?
    There can also be a sense of derision sometimes justified sometimes not, which can alienate newer members or make it difficult for them to feel welcome, I found this but took it as some sort of initiation, I found participation in off topic or joining in with banter in the SABS helped me, it can seem a bit like that line from jaws " how do we have live here to become an islander? "
    " you'll never be an islander"
    What I would say to any new member is, look through the huge extent of topics that interest you and post on one. Just starting a new post on a topic that has 1000 posts in the back catalogue won't go down well. All in all though I don't think anything is wrong with ajb per say,
    It was either that.....or the priesthood

    I think the best time to meet a lot of AJB members at once is in London the days around the premiere of a new Bond film. I was there for Spectre and pretty much everywhere I went I ran into members here.
