How to dye All Saint trousers?

Hi,

I would like to dye my All Saint Iggy pants in dark brown (currently in burgundy color).
Can someone teach me how to do that?
Do you have to remove the labels?
Are there other precautions I should take?

Thank you,

Cheers -{

    I have had good results with dyeing some old clothes (100% cotton) and now you can buy dye that you can put in the washing
    machine, just bare in mind that the original colour will effect the outcome of the final result, burgundy with a dark brown covering it should work well.

    I dyed a Levi's stonewash blue jacket with dark brown and od green dye and it turned out great. Personally I would use two packets of the dye, just on the safe side :)

    Also, after you have dyed your item run the washer without anything in with some bleach.

    If it is a cotton mix eg nylon or polyester I dont think the dye will work as well or at all -{

    Thank you so much for the info!
    So you didnt have to care of the labels?
    Also would you use two packets of dye in one wash or would you do two separate dye washes?

    Thank you also for the tip with the washing machine.
    If I disappear from the forum, it will be because of my wife and you will be responsible for that -{ -{ -{

    I wouldnt worry about the labels, I think that most are made out of nylon so will stay the colour that they are.

    Yes, two in one go, that is what I did.

    This is the only photo that I could find on my computer, I will take more in daylight if you want, but the jacket changes colour depending on what light im in.

    Please dont worry about the washer, but if your wife won't let you and you end up doing it by hand, WEAR GLOVES :D or you will end up with brown hands. Also if doing it in a bucket or similar make sure all of the dye is dissolved.

    Trust me, the washer will be fine ;) -{

    You are an expert.
    Your help is well appreciated.
    I will try to do it when my wife is away :)

    I've dyed one or two pairs of the All Saints Cords, and they are a little tricky. I'll say that if you're ok with getting them "close enough," then go ahead and do the dye. But if you're looking for a 1-1 match, I would just keep the burgundy pair and keep on the look-out for a pair of the Bitter Chocolate Iggys, or at least buy a pair of chocolate-brown cords that are slim-fit and have the same wale (cord)-count (not too hard to find, especially in winter months).

    The pairs that I dyed were all using the hot water-stovetop method. RIT dye has instructions on how to do this. Keep in mind that the color of the trousers will certainly affect the end results of the dye. In other words, placing the trousers in a bath of brown dye doesn't mean they're going to come out that exact color of brown. In theory, you would need to strip the color out of the trousers (bleach or dye remover), returning the fabric to a white or neutral color, and then proceed with the color dye bath. But I think it's important to mention that clothing goes through many dye baths to achieve the color and look that you end up purchasing on the store shelves. And in the case of the AS Iggys (much like jeans that have a "wash" or distressed effect), they're also placed in chemical baths to achieve the desired rinse/look.

    In short, you're not going to get the exact color and look of the Bitter Choc that AS produced. I tried dying a pair using the same burgundy color, and the end result was more of a reddish-brown (and darker) color than the Bitter Choc. I would recommend using either the beige/sand color they released (I think it was called Geography) or the washed black color (more of a worn grey color). The Bitter Choc had a lot of those grey undertones - not a whole lot of color. I believe there was also a Light Grey color, and a darker grey called Airforce. The Light Grey would be another good option.

    As for the labels, they will definitely be affected by the dye. The beige labels inside the waistband will darken to a point where the writing will be nearly illegible. And the leather badge on the outside of the waistband at the back will darken significantly as well. I would recommend, at the very least, removing the leather badge - you can have that sewn back on after the dye process. Remember to also put the trousers through a wash with a product that seals in the dye - otherwise, it will continue to bleed with every wash until the dye is completely removed (and soaked up by all your other clothes). Even after you run them through the sealing wash, I would still wash them separately from your other clothes.

    Hope this info helps!! Good luck with whichever method you choose, and post your results here!!

    Kind regards,
    Craig

    Hi Craig,

    Thank you very much for the detailed instructions.
    It is more tricky than what I expected.
    Is there a product you can recommend to seal the color?

    Thank you all for taking the time to answer my question.

    Cheers,

    I tried dying a burgundy pair of Iggys using one brown packet and wasn’t pleased with the results. There was still too much red undertone. If I were to do it again I might try two packets, one brown, and the other charcoal.

    Like DBS said above, if you dont want to have the original colour showing through, bleach them first, and if the dye is affecting the labels like he says then melt some candle wax on to them before -{

    I’ve had a good result using two packets of dye - one brown and one black - to get the Bitter Chocolate effect (brown alone is too pale) - in the washing machine. That should cover burgundy if anything does! -{

    Hi,

    What is the SA color of the AllSaints in skyfall ?
    I have one in the washed black color (more of a worn grey color). You think is possible to dye it in the same color as the SA ?

    Thanks
    Luca
