Haven't noticed the left-entry thing in U.S. buildings, but perchance has there been an increase in the sale of swords in recent years? One theory on why the U.K. drives on the left is that in olden days, horsemen would pass each other on the left so that they could sword-fight with their right arms should the encounter turn hostile, rather than having to fight over the horse.
Similar with Japan.
