I have a idea for future world cups . I might even write to the FA . My idea is to do away with penalties . We all hate them . And if it's a draw then the team that has most yellow cards because of their low down cheating shirt pulling filthy antics loses ,This will cut out the help my I'm dying rolling around on the floor trying to cheat at the stroke of a pen
Only problem then is refs need to be more consistent and the diving will prob be increased to con the ref into booking a player.
Bizarre thing about yesterdays game is that Colombia looked good from the 70th min onwards when they finally decided to play and stop taking players out )
I suppose it might be worse had So-called Islamic State fielded a team and gone on to qualify...
Not sure England would fare well in that shoot-out...
Agree about welshboy78; Colombia lost on penalties twice really, had they not been keen to foul all the time their goal in open play would have been the winner - unless of course you count all the times England might have scored but always got taken down I suppose.
Still can't say England look like Finalists really and to a neutral that was possibly the most boring of the recent matches.
That said I am mighty grateful we don't have a World Cup song or World Cup Evening Comedy Show to deal with this time round.

I suspect that most of the game's biggest divers are quite capable of playing honest football, there's just no incentive for them to do so (I love the fact that FIFA pretty much eliminated people taking their shirts off in celebration when they score a goal but have still made no inroads when it comes to referees being surrounded and intimidated or players trying to con red and yellow cards for their opponents). I remember when Jurgen Klinsmann signed for Spurs. He was a completely different player for Tottenham than we'd seen before because he knew that - at that time - English refs were far more strict about diving than those he'd played with previously. He was a reasonably sure-footed player for Spurs and yet still just as good as he'd been before which does suggest that most players are quite capable of keeping their feet when told to!
I'm not sure I can deal with Saturday either. Football on screen is the mortal enemy of bands playing in pubs.

I must say that so far the tournament has been great .the stadiums look well kept and the pitches look perfect. I saw an interview with some England fans , and they said their travel/visits/etc had been trouble free , with no signs of marauding Russian fans beating people up . Every one they said had been most welcoming . I'm sure our gutter press would revel in taking photos of England fans fighting . But all seems quiet and good natured , But with out being blinkered I'm sure Mr Putin has made it very clear ,that if there is any trouble from his countrymen , they can't expect a very long stint in the Gulag .Hmmm sounds like a good idea for Britain . Most Russians I have met are lovely people - let’s face it for decades we sat either side of a wall expecting the other would throw a nuke. It never happened and now globalisation, the internet and football (among other sports) have broken down many of those barriers

I know lots of Russians (none ex-KGB or current-FSB as far as I'm aware!), and they are indeed a great bunch. Great senses of humour, love of culture (classical music, literature and booze!) and just all around great sorts. It's very hard to compare them to what Putin and his pals get up to. I don't raise Putin with them as I don't want to be disappointed if they admit to loving him, and I don't want to upset them if they hate him!

That argument just doesn’t make any sense though...VAR clearly showed it was a penalty - as all the pundits pointed out...so why are they having to blame themselves...? ?:) ...it was the fault of VAR and of the referee - that’s 100% clear...
Having said that, I can’t stand all the ‘theatrics’...VAR should be used to clamp down on this too.

The referees have been hounded in many matches to a crazy extent. A red card would quickly put a stop to that. One game was delayed for donkeys the other day whilst the ref was being surrounded / hassled / grabbed. Disgraceful behavior but FIFA no doubt wont let the ref act on it at a World Cup game.

Not in Australia that I know of. In the 70's in particular soccer players here were referred to as 'Sheilas, Wogs and Poofters' which was the title of a biography written by the late Johnny Warren about soccer in Australia. Fortunately those expressions are rarely heard these days and soccer is one of the biggest participating and followed sports in the country. Political correctness has also helped in this regard and if you do get heard using similar disparaging comments you are a chance of being ejected from the ground, having your membership torn up or even worse be forced to listen to Justin Bieber non stop for a week.

They way the Colombian players harassed the referee after he gave the penalty in the England match was disgraceful...he should have booked some of them or at least FIFA should hand out retrospective fines. Not that I have any faith in FIFA 8-) they fined a team £50,000 because a player wore ‘trusox’ but only fined another £22,000 for their fans racist chants
I've just seen a clip of the great Gordon Banks famous off the line save against Brazil in 1970 (I was 11) now that was a save ,and Brazil , that was a team , but I think Pickfords penalty save will go on to be a great , now as cheeky 11 year olds we would go into the local sweet shop and ask the man if he had World Cup willy .For those of you not old enough to remember WCW was the England Lion mascot , oh how we laughed then ,
