Exploding Pens

Just watching Skyfall, funny how Q says to Bond when they meet for the first time “were you expecting an exploding pen? we don’t go in for that kind of thing anymore”

Then gives him an exploding watch in a Spectre.

8-) :)) -{

Still Craig’s best Bond, enjoying watching it again.

    It's obvious Q not only has a fear of planes, but pens as well.

    You can bet that in B25 he'll say they don't go in for exploding watches anymore; then in the next film Bond gets an exploding phone :s
    Always have an escape plan. Mine is watching James Bond films.

    Always thought that was a snide put-down of the older films. Not cool.

    Agreed, it did seem like a swipe at GE.

    Possibly Samsung, considering there was one in the last film. Good brand, too.

    a bit of metafictional commentary on the earlier films, similar to a lot of dialog in the Brosnan era films. But the tone of the Craig films is more snide, and there always is the suspicion the new generation of filmmakers aren't respecting the origins of the series.
    Value judgement aside, they are signalling the new films will not be following the conventions of the classics The Lotus exploding at the beginning of FYEO served the same purpose, but without the implied superiority.

    In the same scene from Skyfall, why does Bond lean in and nickname the new Quartermaster Q as if its a witty joke. That doesn't mean anything unless he himself has been watching the old films. Same thing when Eve finally reveals her surname is Moneypenny in the last scene, the signficance is irrelevant to the characters unless they themselves know some other Bond once knew some other Moneypenny. And of course same with Blofeld in the last film.
    Sometimes think CraigBond is crossing between realities when we aren't watching: so much for being a more realistic Bond.
