When was Connery hired to return for Diamonds Are Forever?

I'm trying to figure out when Connery was recast as Bond. Filming started on 5 April 1971. Does anyone know how long before that Connery started talks to come back and when he was confirmed to be coming back to the role? Was an announcement made for his return?
