I wouldn't say disenchanted, CHB- perhaps like me you've been there so many times before that you just wish they would get on with it, already, and make more films!

I think you’re probably right, I was brought up to expect one a year in the 60’s then it was two a year for decades (perfectly acceptable) now we’re lucky to get two a decade. Added to this is the probability of a woke Bond which will destroy the whole franchise. Maybe not disenchanted but disillusioned.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

The Management have produced two poor films with NTTD and in particular Spectre. I don’t have high hopes for the future especially with the possibility of shoe horning Bond into the current climate. Hope springs eternal though.

    Yes. Considerably!

    Hear, hear.

One of the dynamics with fan sites is that they frequently feel like places where people are anything but fans. Disappointment can run high, probably because these characters are so important to us, and we hate being let down.

I don’t hate NTTD. I just don’t think it’s very good and is not ageing well but that’s just my opinion. I find I can’t watch the whole film. I tend to just watch the Jamaica and Cuba scenes.

    Yes. Considerably!

In my opinion NTTD is a really well-made film, but some plot points are very controversial and even questionable.

  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent

I think NTTD is actually a good film, it just doesn't tickle my Bond senses as there's not much Bondy about it so I don't enjoy it all that much. Spectre is a poorer film which never quite comes together, but I probably enjoy it more because it's just has that Bond feel.

That's fine, and you are completely right to feel that…others don’t….🙂

I guess it’s just easy to use generalisations when it’s not strictly true…

Im not trying to ‘mansplain’ or pick on anyone…it’s just - opinions vary 😀

When I say I think NTTD is a poor film, I mean poor as meaning of a low or inferior standard or quality. My comparison of it is set against the in my opinion best Bond film Casino Royale. I would use words like excellent, superb and wonderful to describe CR. I actually prefer NTTD to Spectre which I think is the worst Bond film in the canon.

In no particular order are the things I don't like about NTTD:

Blofeld and Madeleine were very weak characters in Spectre. I have no idea why they were brought back and neither impressed me in NTTD.

Safin was an ineffective villain and didn't impress me at all.

The 007 code name gimmick didn't work for me.

More motorcycle stunts. They already did that in Skyfall and to better effect.

Killing Bond off was just wrong and just felt like they went for a gotcha moment. Coming out of the pandemic I think the world was looking for heroes and happy endings. James has always lived to fight another day so that was a big disappointment to me.

Strangely for me since buying the blu ray I've only watched the entire film once.

I don't hate the film. I thought the Jamaica scenes were great and the Cuban scenes were a hoot. Some of the photography was wonderful, especially in Matera.

    Yes. Considerably!

To use the last two films, even assuming they're poor (one was a misfire with moments; one was a mixed bag that a lot of us are still struggling with for reasons beyond film criticism 😂) as evidence for a "no confidence" vote in "the management" ignores the "thoroughly batting .500" average they've had for a very long time.

The same management gave us Casino Royale, Skyfall, and roughly two and a half bad Pierce Brosnan movies.

  • 00Stirl00Stirl Posts: 64MI6 Agent

Don’t drag Pierce into it 😂. Look, at the end of the day we all like different things but we are obviously BOND fans. I have fond memories of the older films but now sometimes find certain scenes difficult. The newer stuff has far more competition than ever. Bourne and Mi et. Lea of course managing to cross both😘. I think we are sometimes so desperate to enjoy something that’s a favourite, ultimately it can disappoint with even a slight misalignment of the norm. Many dislike Die another day….but for me I’ll watch it time and time again laughing at Bond asking for his usual suite😂.

I really don’t like either of the Dalton outings but my kids do! Let’s just remember why we all chip in….we just need more of it to serve our appetite.

I think history gives us reason to be optimistic. The last time EON and P&W re-invented the series they have us CR, a modern classic. Sure, they had Fleming. But there was a lot in that movie that wasn't from Fleming. They did great!

you characters sure do drift off-topic!

it is possible for a work of art to be technically perfect, in terms of how it is assembled, while at the same time being not at all what the viewer likes.

'Aaron Taylor-Johnson is allegedly the top choice to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond, after taking part in a secret screen test.

The actor, 32, is said to have impressed producer Barbara Broccoli during an audition at Pinewood Studios, where many of the franchise's films have been filmed.

A source told The Sun: 'Aaron went for a screen test to be the next Bond in September and producers and Barbara loved him. He is now one of the front-runners.''

This does sound like an impressive hurdle. Do we know of anybody else who has actually been auditioned, rather than just letting the world know they want to play Bond?

I think the only films I've seen this actor in was as QuickSilver in The Avengers movies. I don't really remember him, but those films are not actors showcases.

at 32 he is younger than some above seem to want but the age sounds perfect to me (especially as this film isnt going to be made anytime soon). If he's good he can play it younger or older, The young-ish age also suggests a new Origin story, and a longterm plan: he could be around for decades if cast.

ATJ was in the Kick-ass movies, Anna Karenina, Nocturnal Animals, The King's Man and Tenet among other things.

  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent

He is excellent in Nocturnal Animals, that is true. But I got worried when I saw Godzilla and he couldn't carry the lead in it.

  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 37,861Chief of Staff

Godzilla's a bit heavy for anyone to carry.... 😜

Heh! Sadly Bryan Cranston was doing just fine in the movie just before ATJ took over...

  • HalfMonk HalfHitmanHalfMonk HalfHitman USAPosts: 2,353MI6 Agent

Yeah, Godzilla was a movie that kinda wasn't sure who its lead was.

  • Sir MilesSir Miles The Wrong Side Of The WardrobePosts: 27,750Chief of Staff

I watched Bullet Train last weekend…had no idea ATJ was in it until I watched it…he was excellent, the film was passable.

First really noticed him in Nowhere Boy…he was decent in that.

I foresee massive monogrammatic confusion since we'd have Aaron Taylor-Johnson (ATJ) vying with Anya Taylor Joy (ATJ).

Aaron would be the first Jewish Bond FWIW.

I have a sick feeling that detail would squash support for him in some rancid corners of this fandom.

And wait'll those types find out where he got his surname...

I wonder more how some muslim countries will react to a Jewish James Bond.

This announcement cannot come soon enough.

This is how I feel as well. I don’t give a rat’s bottom about getting an Oscar-worthy film with James Bond in it. I want a proper James Bond film!

And I don’t think anyone suggested that “everyone” hates NTTD. Obviously that’s far from true. But several of us dislike it. And our opinions are not invalidated because it made a lot of money. Again, I couldn’t give a rat’s bottom, so I wish people would stop trotting that out.

  • Miles MesservyMiles Messervy Posts: 1,772MI6 Agent

Taylor Johnson seems fine to me. I’m not overly familiar with his work, but he doesn’t offend. It’s all down to the screenplay, really.

  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,334MI6 Agent

He's talented and in some photos he looks really Bondian.

But he does have a crooked smile and sleepy eyes that I'm not sure about.

  • 00Stirl00Stirl Posts: 64MI6 Agent

I for one don’t want to see a ‘youngster’ in role. A RN Commander who’s developed the skill set and worldly experience we enjoy has to be old enough to carry the burden and tiring more easily in a fight. Bond showed vulnerability in Spectre train fight scene with Hinx. The only other time a fight looked real was Fassbender being killed off in film Haywire.

So, just to remind you all of my suggestion…Dan Stevens 👍 When he’s too geriatric, let’s go through it all again 😱

I've been wondering if ATJ's age is a clue to who they are talking to. There are a lot of very well known names about that age, Nick Hoult, Dan Radcliffe, Taron Egerton, Daniel Kaluuya, Dev Patel, and from The Crown, Josh O'Connor.

Grace Randolph from the Beyond the Trailer Youtube channel thinks O'Connor would be good, but I just can't see it. Randolph is very anti-ATJ.

Going down the IMDB list of actors from 31-33 years of age, as ATJ is 32, and one actor I think must be a front runner is Tom Brittney. He was in Barbara Broccoli's Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, admittedly briefly. But the fact she worked with him must be a plus. Of course, it all comes down to the FRWL screen test.

    https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5938631

I'm wondering if the news abut ATJ means past favourites like James Norton are now deemed too old, he is 37. Along with Sam Heughan, who is 42 and I've seen touted as Bond.

  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent

I can totally see why you love it; I think it is a good film. It's just not to my taste, but that doesn't make it bad.

I do think the ending works really well incidentally.

  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent

Sope Dirisu is the main one in the age range for me: has the looks, alpha male feel, right age and screen presence. But possibly needs more evidence of being able to carry a big film.
