For sure, China was covering up and hiding in the beginning and are running a massive propaganda machine to cover up.
The later applies to the US to the same degree with the purpose of the POTUS shortcomings and faults.
I hope that the investigations against China ( at a later point of time) will be done by the same degree like investigations about how much the daily briefings in the WH where ignored.
Having said all this, for now we need China‘s cooperation on many fields (research, information, studies, PPE, money and so on), so the current China-bashing seems to be counter-productive imo.
My family in Hong Kong is mostly locked up at home since 20th January, school has not begun in February. I am pretty sure that the WH has been warned before those dates, but latest the measures taken in HK should have rang all alarm bells in Washington.
However, over February and beginning of March, the threat has been denied and downplayed in the US.

One wholeseller of PPE warned the german government early January that he was facing hundreds of new accounts which all had a connection to China and that they where ordering PPE like crazy.
He asked to put his company under an export ban which did not happen and he says that his colleagues had similar experiences.
So, taken that what the WH is correctly saying ( I doubt it) that China was covering up and the US had no clue about how dangerous the Virus really was because of it.
Chinese companies buying PPE worldwide like crazy while shutting down Wuhan and building a 6000 bed hospital there in 10 days should have rang every alarm bell with the intelligence agencies in January.

I remember when China was irate bacause the Nobel Peace Comitee gave the prize to a Chines dissident. They punished Norway because no such award in China would have been given without the goverment's permision. Actually our foreign minister warned against the dicision.

If not I want to be first in cue! it all makes sense: The oil price is crashing, planes barely fly enymore, factories are closed down, the water in Venice is the cleanest in centuries, people are working from home instead of drivng to work etc. And best of all - it proves how evil the climate change people are! During a pandemics, you may be forced to shut down parts of your economy in order to avoid a terribe number of fatalities - and that certainly would affect negatively your popularity among your citizens - because frankly, that's the only reason why they have been voting for you and will vote for you in the first place.
So, you must do everything to erode the common tolerance for those measures and push to reopen the economy as soon as possible, because frankly, dead people won't elect the other guy anyhow....
The obvious approach would be telling your people that you have decided to let many more people die for the benefit of growing economic numbers because the price of locking down is too high in $ - not in lifes.
A smarter approach would be to point out instead the growing home violence, the isolation suffering of old people, the rising numbers of depression and angst - particularly amongst kids, the increase of drug use/abuse addict and ride that wave out.
This strategy can also be used, when you aim for the top job - but yet don't have it - just like Mr. Laschet in Germany

At the moment there are over 2000 dying because of a COVID infection EVERY DAY in the US and it seems, that the measures to limit or reduce the spread of the pandemic are kind of unpopular.....

I understand the poor and the black are overrepresented among the infected in the US. Are minorities and the poor overrepresented in other countires too? Here in Norway the Somalians are somewhat over-represented. The reasons seem to be Somalians often don'tseak Norwegian (those people don't like getting intergrated), they live together in small apartements and they like to stay close together in groups.

I believe I have read that minorities are also overrepresented in many of the preexisting conditions that complicate the impact of CV and more often lead to death at least I think that is true in the US.
Curious, has the whole mask/no mask thing become one of the biggest points of contentions everywhere like it has here in the states? Are most other countries making masks optional? Required? Or just indifferent about them altogether?
