In FYEO, why didn't the villains just steal the ATAC right away?

SPOILERS

I didn't understand why Kristatos, just didn't steal the ATAC right away. He hires a hitman to take out the man who went to look for the ATAC, and I assume that man was somewhere near where the ship sank, so why not wait for him to locate it, and then take him out, and steal it right there? Why kill him before he has found it, then wait like two weeks for Bond to find it and take it then?

I’d say it would be hard to strike at the precise moment when Melina’s Dad finds it, but before he hands it over to the proper authorities.

(This is all based on the easily false pretense that the ATAC still has value)

The question for me is why send the diver AND the sub into the sunken wreckage when they have the perfect trap waiting back on board the ship. The battle between the research subs represents the low point of the series for me because it’s just so pointless.
    My current 10 favorite:

    1. GE 2. MR 3. OP 4. TMWTGG 5. TSWLM 6. TND 7. TWINE 8.DN 9. GF 10. AVTAK

I just thought that Kristatos found the wreckage on his own based on Havelock's location, then he sent a diver to recover it and a battle sub to guard the diver. Then Bond came along, went down for the ATAC at the same time Bond did, and then Kristatos discovered the Triana. I don't think his plan was for Bond to recover the ATAC for him, it just turned out that way. He was planning on getting it himself. Why would he have expected someone else to recover it for him?

But even if Kristatos wants to send divers to go get it himself, why didn't he start looking for it, after he hired the hitman to kill Melina's parents?

Why did he wait for the exact same time Melina and Bond went to look. He had like two weeks to find it, yet he finds it five minutes after Bond and Melina do. Isn't that very oddly coincidental?

And if this ATAC is so important, why didn't MI6 just send Bond to go look for it right away, rather than have him chase leads like the hitman Gonzalez, or Loche? Why not just go look for it right away?

It took Kristatos time to find it. We don't know that he didn't have people looking for it at the time Gonzales killed the Havelocks. He had to get Havelock out of the way before he could start looking for it. Bond went after Gonzalez to find out who the British government was up against. Gonzales lead Bond to Locke, who lead him to Kristatos. Because of the location of the wreckage off the coast of Albania, they couldn't mount a salvage operation. They wouldn't do anything that could lead to war.

Perhaps you should watch the film again?

I watched this last night - I don't understands why Bond doesn't jump off the helicopter when it is flying a few feet over Blofeld on top of the building :D

I always wondered that as well.

Oh okay, well if they were not able to mount a salvage operation without going to war, then how come Bond and Melina were able to retrieve it without a war starting?

How come Kristatos's men were looking for it the whole time without a war starting? Couldn't Bond and other people just go look for it right away, as long as they were discreet, like Kristatos's men?

Kristatos likely had a connection with the Albanian government as he had a warehouse there. No doubt he was paying off people there to base his criminal activities there. Kristatos did not need to be discreet. The ever-cautious British government didn't want Bond going there.

I never realised before how intricate this film's story is!

It probably was higher than it seemed. Kind of like when you're a mile from the airport and yet the planes landing seem like they're only a few feet above your head. And with the helicopter moving so fast it would not have been safe for Bond to jump off.

    You're probably right, Matt.

    Craig's Bond would have jumped.

Yes, Craig's Bond certainly would have jumped. FYEO was trying to be a more realistic film, and I think it mostly succeeds.

I'm a huge coward, and agree that trying to jump from a fast moving helicopter. Would definitely hurt or kill ;)
    So I wouldn't have done it :D

Bond may not be a coward like you, but it would have equally hurt or killed him to jump. :))

It's nice to know we're all equal under gravity. ;)
