Mankiewicz considered David Hedison to be a potentially returning Leiter actor in a series of Moore Bond films, but they couldn't make the Leiter character fit into the next few screenplays.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.
I can understand Yaphet Kotto's reservations about playing a black Bond villain. There's an arguably racist implication that behind every smooth and sophisticated Kananga there's a feral/fly Mr Big. Still, the same contradiction in character make-up is true of other Bond villains, I guess.

The whole section of the movie in the novelty shop and car park feels a little small scale/ 'TV movie'. The 'tailing' sequence picks up the pace again. The driver with the wolverine side burns... same style sideburns as a middle-aged stuntman heavy in the DAF PTS/OHMSS.
